I was making fun of this Kanye West thing (http://ajani.ca/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/a_still_image_from_music_video_powe r_by_recording_artist_kanye_west-1024x614.jpg) yesterday and my friend proceeded to try and explain whatever the hell it was to me. I looked it up and it doesn't really make much sense, even less so that a bunch of rappers are now a part of it. And then there's conspiracy theories and some stuff about Illuminati that it ties into? Does anyone know and care enough to explain what this freemasonry stuff is all about?

I got to attend a Freemason open house a couple years ago. The only requirements to be considered for membership is that you have to be a man over the age of 18 and accept the existence of a higher power. I only qualified for half of the requirements.
Over the last few weeks, I've been randomly going up to people and giving them the secret Freemason handshake to see if they could get me in.
So far, no luck. I'm beginning to think the whole thing is baloney, to be perfectly honest.

Freemasonry is a legitimate topic for a politics thread, considering their history and political influence they've wielded. Even questions like whether or not it is acceptable for political figures to be members of secretive shadowy groups come up.

The only reason people like Kanye are part of it is to spread the message through culture and society. Tupac rapped a lot about them and went a little too far. John Kennedy did the same thing by trying to end the war, push for true civil rights, and end the central bank. His father was a Nazi supporter so the establishment figured he would go along. He didn't.
It's not some grand conspiracy... it's an ideological battle. It's the same kind of people like Prescott Bush (George Bush's grandfather) who also funded the Nazi's during WWII. Same people, same idea, same struggle.

Yea it's funny how people try to deny that any of it even exists. It should be debated... do we support our Constitution, our institutions, and our national sovereignty? Or is globalism and governments like the European Union more important?
People forget about things like the Anti-Masonic Party in our country's history for instance. John Quincy Adams was a member of it for a short period of time.
It's not some crazy idea lurking in the shadows it's been around for a while...
The freemason's are a group of middle-age+ men that feel the need to fit in somewhere and wish to feel important. They take themselves too seriously and have all kinds of "secrets" that nobody except the freemasons actually give a shit about. Simple as that.

I dated a girl for two years who's father was in charge of all freemasonry in TN. From what he told me; while just about anyone can become a freemason, you're not really brought into the inner group until you reach a certain level of membership that can only come with an internal election. That being said, he also told me that it's essentially a "proud rotary club with closed doors." Theres no illuminati, theres no knights templar, and theres no massive conspiracy. From what i gathered its the boy scouts for grownups.
Granted this is a very high level mason talking to a non-mason, but being (at the time) a potential son in law, and him being about as high up as a mason can go, I have no reason to not believe what i was told.

You do know there's technically no freedom of speech on this site, correct? It's privately owned, and the moderators can, if so willing, stop the things people are saying.
As well, based on your 'nature of free speech' logic, I'm perfectly within my bounds to call for Ryan to lock the topic (more sarcastic than serious, but at this point we'll just assume that sucker flew 50 feet overhead), and you're perfectly within your bounds to say the stupid shit you've been saying.
Good talk, I feel enlightened.
