Thirty-Four
Fate stands to favour the ones who work hard for their money
I’m slaving for heaven, but I’m feeling the flames from the south
Stretch back, and reach for the ceiling
Step back and fall through the floor
The worlds filled with beggars who starve as they savour the pity
And all of my heroes spend all of their time underground
When each word just echoes a problem
And we can’t find a sentence to solve them...
I'll take the weight of the world on my shoulders
If I break you won't know but I'll still remember
Forever I'm trying and failing to find where I am
We protest the war but the world still ignores every whisper
I stare down the barrel and wait for the smell of the smoke
I’m worn out from holding my hands up
So calm down and rest for a while
When Spring rolls around we’ll clean up and move on to the city
I’ll never spend a single honest hour in this town
When each word just echoes a problem
And we can’t find a sentence to solve them...
I'll take the weight of the world on my shoulders
If I break you won't know but I'll still remember
Forever I'm trying and failing to find where I am
When each word just echoes a problem
And we can’t find a sentence to solve them...
I'll take the weight of the world on my shoulders
If I break you won't know but I'll still remember
Forever I'm trying and failing to find where I am

I love it, Matt. Can't find a thing I don't like about it...hmm...nice work. Like to see the finished product.

I would also like to see the finished product as well. I am really happy with the verses, which is quite an achievement due to the fact that I am almost never happy with anything I do.
But, I put alot of nice little things in there that seem simple at first but are actually quite detailed

Finish that chorus, because it has huge potential.
Only thing: Capitalize "Spring"... and maybe add punctuation, before Romeo gets here. ;-)

One day he will be able to look at as a song posted on a message board as less than a thesis for a major in English. LoLz!/
I want to finish the chorus, but because it is 2:30 am, I can't pick up a guitar and start strumming out the song and doing some nice singing over the bitch. I also have no idea how to finish the chorus, or if I need anything else on the song.

You need a sick instrumental bridge, and a one line closer.
Then you're set.
Take my advice.

Its kind of a folk rock song at the moment, along the lines of 'Part Of The Queue' by Oasis or Bright Eyes (although I know you hate BE).
I don't know about the one line closer. It would have to be a definitive representation of the rest of the song in order to close it in one sentence and be more than a quip.
Good call on the instrumental bridge though, going to get some nice country style finger picking in that biatch
It's hard for me to find anything I don't like in your writings. I can't wait to see it once it's finshed. As usual, amazing work!

I don't hate Bright Eyes...
I just don't see what the big deal is about him.

My favourite band/artist :)
I think he is the best lyricist out there at the moment, with the most consistent discography in the current music scene.
People hate the voice, I adore it

Ben Gibbard > Conor Oberst.
Sorry.
Hell, Colin Meloy is better than Conor. (The Decemberists, for the record.)

I am a big fan of both DCFC and The Decemberists, and I think they are all contempories of one another.
But if I was to put in order of preference;
Conor Oberst>Ben Gibbard>>Colin Meloy.
Although, like I say, they are all up there with the best in the scene at the moment.

For sure.
I'd argue that they're among the best in terms of music in general.
I just don't think Conor has (or, more appropriately: Doesn't use) that pop/songwriting sensibility Ben and Colin have.

Oh, I think in terms of songwritting as a whole Ben Gibbard is slightly better, but I prefer Conor's lyrics from a personal stand point.
I mean, it is all down to preference at the end of the day and respecting that preference, which I do for you because I agree with you from your standpoint.
Now that the gayness is over, I am thinking about making a thread where everyone submits what they think is the best work they have written in this last year (one or two songs that they think are their best works of the last 12 months). See you there son

Notebooks: Yes, but I'm unorganized.
Computer: Yes, but I recently got a new one so all of my writing (Spare December) is on that.
I'll look through this forum. (Edit: I did and I realized how annoying I used to be on this forum. :shake:)

Well, if you want a song for a compilation, me and my band will be recording in a studio in a 2 months, so you when we get around to that I would be happy to let you use a song, providing you mailed me a copy of it and I could get airtight protection on my work

It's only going to be digital, but I would definitely send you a zip folder, and what do you mean "airtight protection", I promise that this won't leak early or anything If thats what you mean...

I mean I want to retain all the rights to the song, the copyright and intellectual property rights would remain mine, with any external use of the song going through me. Its basically me protecting the song so if I chose to re-record it or persue distribution through another channel there would be no legal issues there.
I study the music industry as part of my course so I am taught from day one to watch my ass about this stuff.

If you are going to make a physical copy of this compilation I would indeed like a real copy

Yeah, the only copyrights I keep are the bands that are on my label, so don't worry about that AT ALL, I'm not Tony Brummel, I'm only 16, not corrupted yet, and yeah, just PM me your address, and the second it comes out, I'll send it to you. Your a good man Mr. Rawlings, lol.

There's no way you're running a legit label at 16. No offense, I understand where you're coming from, but it's impossible to actually run a label at only 16.

Yea, but it's pretty cool what he's doing. Kudos on starting so early, I'm envious.
Conor is a loser, but Fevers and Mirrors needs to go down in the annals of Indie/Folk history as one of the greatest albums of the genre.
I really like this, Matt. You're a great musician, you could go places.

It's not a great label, but we have 3 full-lengths coming out, and a studio that we are partnered with. We only distribute in parts of New England, and on downloadpunk.com. And, it isn't just me, I have "help" from a 28 year old, who helped was on Reignition Records for a while. And I'm not taking offense, just explaining.

Oh ok.
Nothing hurts me more than seeing bands killed by labels started by kids who have no idea what they're doing.
Good to see you do have some 'help' (or whatever), and it also adds some credibility to your label. (No one will take a 16 year old seriously, no matter what. It's sad but true.)

Yeah, i know what you mean, I'm trying, but it is hard, It is more of a way to promote bands til they get better noticed. Thanx for the concern though.
