i think thats crazy. he always would said he want to end his career in america. and his salary is so over the top. he will be making half a million pounds a WEEK. comapared to something just over 100,000 pounds at the moment.
thats $972,000 a week compared to $194,000. oh did anyone mention he is already 31 and signed a 5 year deal!? having said that, im pretty sure this move is all for the marketing of football in america.
i really think he's job is done. now he is just going to relax, and take it easy. i dont blame the guy. he is thirty one. at the end of the day, man united made the best deal when they sold him. having said that, i would have loved to see him return to england.
What kind of shit name for a football (I said it) team is the LA Galaxy? No wonder no one cares about American football teams.

its not going to change soccer's popularity here one bit. most people dont know who he is here, and if they do its only because he married a spice girl. and for people who say hes doing it just for the money, he made nearly as much playing in europe, at least over 100 million for both manchester united and real madrid. and who can honestly say they wouldnt take 250 million over 5 years, with an estimated earnings of 1 million a week.

Soccer is not lame. American soccer (MLS) is lame. You have never experienced a sporting event until you have been to Europe to see a "football" match. It's quite a site. It's more than just a game over there and that makes it all the more exciting. This is coming from someone who has played soccer all their life and wakes up early every Saturday to watch the EPL (English Premier League) on the tube. I wish more people would open up to "the beautiful game" but soccer will never be as popular here as it is over there. Thats just something I must accept.
That's an insane amount of money Becks is set to make. Not bad for someone who isnt even one of the top 50 footballers in the world anymore.

With Becham and Ronaldo it isn't about them being great players anymore. It's about them being a big name that can be marketed to people that other wise might not go to an MLS game. BTW, I see your from STL. Have you heard they want to put the new MLS stadium in Collinsville, IL?

It's pretty obvious Beckham has been trying to get big in America. He didn't come over here just for the money. He wants to be a star all over the world. And you're not big unless you're big in America. He wants to be on the red carpet at movie premieres and all that stuff. Why do you think he signed up to play in LA??
I know the Galaxy has pretty much dominated MLS but still, they probably could've paid him $200 million and he still would've come over. The article made it sound like he was done with Europe anyways. He would've probably taken a pay cut to continue playing over there. So, he just came over here to grab the spotlight.

That is an absurd statement. Every player in Major League Soccer has had prior football experience internationally or has played collegiate soccer at the Division I level. The speed of play and ball skill is incredible, maybe not compared to Premiership but it holds its own. Let’s not forget, the MLS All-Stars did beat Chelsea (first squad) last year. For you to make a comment like that is blasphemous. What sport do you play Kaufman? Go eat some Subway Jared and catch some more uv-rays than the ones from your computer monitor, fat ass. the speed of play??? i watched parts of the chelsea mls allstar game and the championship game and was bored to death. i couldnt get through the entire game and i love soccer. players strolling up and down the field and at times just punting it up the field, not moving the ball up. ball control and dribbling skills are very meager at best. european soccer is definitely more entertaining and more fast paced. watching little kids play when they just kick the ball as soon as they get it and then all chase after it in circles is more entertaining.

Real football (soccer) is the only world sport. There's a World cup every four years with nearly every free country in the world cying for competition. There have been soccer matches in England where fans have literally fought to the death to prove their team was superior. In Brazil, many star players are treated the same way Britney Spears or any other highly tauted celebrity is--stalked, chased, no privacy etc. So it seems to me that the only country in the world that doesn't care about football is America. Go figure, the US team and MLS tend to suck.

Not that I disagree or anything, but the US team in 96, was it?? When the WC was here in the States?? The US team was pretty good then. I was at the US vs. Brazil game at Stanford, and it really looked like the US team was taking it to Brazil, but then whoever it was elbowed Tab Ramos and took him out of the game, and that really turned the tide of the game. Man, that crowd was booing like crazy at that Brazillian player, everybody was so pissed.
I just like telling that story. I was a Cobi Jones fan back in the day, his dreads were rad.
ever since the world cup, i've been interested in soccer.

maybe now people will continue to play soccer past a certain age cuz soccer is the most popular sport for young kids then idk they must grow out of it hopefully beckham brings the popularity up because im sick of soccer getting laughed at and shit and maybe it will be on TV more other then just a saturday game and UEFA twice every 2 to 3 weeks

Beckham is over the hill and over rated. I'll watch the MLS when Ronaldo, Rooney, Ronaldinho, and the likes of those players join up.
Which will never happen
beckham proves an innovator, in my opinion... to some, it may be a step down, but he is bringing credibility to the american game and building a bridge so that other top rate players CAN do exactly that: "join up." btw, if beckham is washed up, what is ronaldo??

then i mustve magically seen it on some other channel, or maybe my eyes are just playing tricks on me and im not watching the mls on tv. every game isnt covered but games are shown on espn and abc.

its because soccer doesnt really lead anywhere as big like the other pro sports do. you dont make as much money when compared to the other sports and you dont as much fame. also, soccer is a rougher sport than people think, some kids cant handle it. theres alot of shoving back and forth and the higher you go the rougher it gets. ive seen many kids gradually get cut from teams because as i moved up in age it got rougher and rougher and kids werent fighting for the ball or holding their ground, they would let other kids practically run them over and just shove them out of the way. its tougher than people think too, its not just run out there and kick the ball, you cant really pick it up like basketball or football.

David Beckham is an over rated over the hill celebrity whore with his stick of a wife, he couldnt handle it in spain hence why he's been a bit part player there and spent most of the time keeping the bench warm, he was never that good in the premiership and certainly wasnt that good for england he was possibly the most pathetic captain we've ever had, he's only coming for the money seriously dont expect anything good from him. Its all down to his wife wanting to live it up in LA hanging out with her new celebrity "friends" like Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes it makes a joke out of football he could have come back to the premiership and ended as a player remembered for playing football not for being a fucking model

I heard a whole lot of whining in this post -- not any content though.
He and the World Cup are the reasons I started following this sport. The MLS has at least one new customer in me when The Galaxy comes to NY against the Red Bulls. I was planning on attending at least one game anyway...this is just a bonus.
As for no one in the US knowing who he his--by 9 am this morning, anyone who watches Good Morning America will at least know who he is. And just about anyone else who reads a newspaper because this type of deal will be talked about everywhere...

RIGHT!
Just here to make a few points as I just read through that ENTIRE thread and couldn't be bothered to quote from every post.
Most of the people that have said 'soccer is shit' are from Texas or the Dakotas. Says a lot. Point is, America have had 'the big four' for decades now and nothing is going to change that, not even David Beckham as hard as he is going to try.
At most, Beckham will do a fantastic job at raising football awarness and upping its profile in America. Other players will follow! Dallas are currently trying to work out a negotiation with Dutch midfielder Edgar Davids and rumour has it the Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo are on their way as well. I personally think that this is fantastic for American sport. Yes, the MLS will never be a competitive league in any way, shape or form, but at least with world-class players coming in, it will prove to be more entertaining.
As for the MLS-Chelsea game, Chelsea did NOT put out their first team. The person who stated that clearly knows nothing about Chelsea FC. They played probably 4 of their starting XI. And yes, that match was horrible to watch, but then the general consensus over here is that Chelsea are one of the most unentertaining teams in Europe (hence the common chant 'Boring Boring Chelsea'). If it's excitement you're after from an English team, you're much better off watching Manchester United, Liverpool or Arsenal.
To the people who have been saying that the US national team are shit, not so true. They were a total letdown at the 2006 world cup but let's not forget how well they did in 2002. The got to the quarterfinals and SHOULD have beaten Germany, but as in many cases, the game was in the hands of the ref and Germany won.
Overall, it's a great move for Beckham and will hopefully do wonders for America's footballing program! :)

Yeah right this is pele all over again sure it will be cool to see beckham for the firs season but after that American's will go back to their old ways and say any sport were all you use is your feet isn't their thing. Which sucks because I love soccer and wish the U.S. had a better professional league.

What are you insinuating? I'm under the assumption that you're attacking me with the Dakotas comment. First of all, I was born in Boston and have lived all over. Second of all, your comment is ignorant. You're from England... does that mean I should think you have bad teeth and walk around saying "'allo guv'na!" Stereotyping... says a lot. Third of all, I never called the sport shit. I said it's a bad TV sport. It is. In comparison to the NFL, NBA, MLB, and, even, the NHL (which still gets better rankings after a year lockout and on a channel most Americans don't get than the top MLS soccer matches on ESPN / ESPN2), it is boring. It will never catch on with the leagues we already have, no matter who comes over, whether it be Zidane, Beckham, or 50 other top world players no one in the US has even heard of. It's all wishful thinking on the MLS' part.

I live on the western border of Minnesota. It's a 14 hour drive from my town to yours. That's not really the point though. I offered an opinion (pointing out that you shouldn't stereotype, no less) and you call me a hillbilly, offering nothing of relevance. You didn't dispute what I said with any insight and flat out insulted me. If you're going to call me a hillbilly when I live in an immediate area with a population of almost 200,000 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fargo-Moorhead) and you live in an immediate area of 100,000 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Livonia%2C_Michigan) (more than 20 miles from Detroit so spare me that fact), I don't really understand how I'm a hillbilly. Just because you have a different opinion, doesn't make you right / wrong or superior / inferior.
