I have never watched a single episode. Do I need to watch the first six seasons to watch the seventh? Or can I jump in on 7 and get it?
(I have the premiere tivo'ed, so if you guys say it's possible, I'll get to watching.)

I started by watching the season 5 premiere. I think you could do the same with season 6. Each season can be watched on its own. Sometimes they don't even explain the backstory for the season you are watching, so you will have questions regardless.
There's not much continuity now in 24. You will be fine watching this season without knowing what happened in the previous ones.

I've just started watching this season and it isn't hard to follow. There's some blanks that are filled in along the way, and some minor storylines/relationships seem to be easily assumed.
I have never seen an episode of this. I was thinking about watching the new series. Starts Sunday, here, I think.
I don't want to start now cuz even if the previous seasons have little factor on the new ones, I would still want to start from the beginning. And 5 seasons of hour long episodes isn't exactly something I could do in a week or so, haha. Well technically I could, but I'd be crazy to do it.

That's like, 120 hours. Fuck.

Well I guess it winds up being considerably less cuz the episodes are probably closer to 40/45 minutes on the DVDs cuz no commercials. Either way, still quite a lot of time put in to watching the entire series.
i'd say you should watch 1-3 together. and then 4/5 are good together.
and 6 i cant tell if i'd fit it with 4/5 yet.
i say 1-3 is good to watch altogether because it has a lot of the same cast. Jack, Kim, Michelle, Tony, Chappelle, Nina, and a lot of stuff is thrown back to past seasons. esp Jack vs Nina. like if you watch 3 before 1 and 2 you wont really understand why Jack so deeply hates Nina. etc...
and 4/5 mainly due to cast as well Jack, Audrey, Chloe, Curtis. although 5 is kind of a transition t a new 24 due to major cast differences between 5/6

i picked up at the beginning of season 4 and while i had tons of questions, the show is almost just as good and easy to follow without the backstory.
however, i cannot recommend enough that when you have the time, go back and watch the previous 5 seasons. it seems like a lot, but trust me - you'll be amazed at how addictive this show is. a lot of people i know had to put the series down at some point or another; not because it was bad, but because it was too addictive.
watch season 6 series premiere. you'll understand.
but rent/buy season 1 while you're at it.
