View Full Version : AGE: An issue or just a number?

Top o' the mornin',

So I'm a picky cunt. After a few bad 'uns, I've come to be very stubborn about the girls a go out with.

We played a show on friday and there were literally a hundred girls I could have focused on speaking to, but there's this one that really won me over straight off the bat. I havent really given any girls a chance since my last g/f but this one I was into straight away.

We talked for ages, exchanged numbers and have been on the myspace/phone since then.

Catch is, she's 16. I be 20 yo. My best friend says, 'Dude, do what makes you happy. You deserve it and age is just a number anyway. If she's cool it's not a problem.'

Is that a valid statement do you think? Cuz I don't wanna not start something with someone I think could be good for me just cuz of her age. Seems a bit shallow to me!

Have received some mixed responses so far though.

I considered asking a girl out who was 16, and i'm 21. (I didn't in the end, but the sentiment was there).

'A say go for it, yo.'

It fits in that. I can't say much. My boyfriend and I have a 4 yr age difference.

Interesting. That puts her a year out of range though!

I'm more down with the 5.3 yrs thing, even though I'm not marrying her, it makes me feel better haha.

age is just a number to an extent. a few years isnt a big deal, but more than 5 is until you get into your twenties. the biggest thing is corresponding maturity levels.

Dating younger people can lead to people you know saying a lot of crap about it, but its not that big of a difference.

I only use age to make generalizations usually. I think many people can step outside their age and be way more mature than it suggests, or sometimes, way more immature as well.

Personally, I'm seeing a guy 7.5 years older than me. If you told me that situation before I met him, I probably wouldn't have believed it could ever work.. but it is.

My bigger beef is guys who are 19+ dating 14-15 year olds. I guess I just saw a lot of my guy friends stay stuck in some highschool stage and suddenly dating girls younger than my siblings, which weirded me out. I just think highschool teaches you a lot... and if you're a newcomer to highschool.. you (in MOST cases) can't relate to someone who's out of highschool.

i like that half your age plus 7 rule

bigbang
01/17/07, 04:44 AM
It does seem like a decent rule, makes a lot of sense. Except.. that means my boy shouldn't be with me haha. Ah well, I'm basically.. not 18. I can get into the bars, and I'm not a complete immature dolt. So whatever :P

TgE ARTdamage

pffft.

you qualify for me with the half your age plus 7 rule ;-)

Wobbie
01/17/07, 05:04 AM
A 4 year difference is fine. But just, for a 16 year old. I think any girl her age dating anyone 21 or over is a bit wrong. But 16 - 20 seems okay to me.

The half + 7 year thing makes it 19-and-a half for me, haha. I'd date anyone over 18. I think that's the general consesus for old bastards like me though.

MandyChaos
01/17/07, 05:45 AM

Encouraging responses thus far!

So what's the biggest age gaps you guys have had in past/current relationships?

lucky_krystle
01/17/07, 07:01 AM
the youngest i have gone is 2 years, and the oldest i have gone is 6. neither lasted though.

i have the most success dating guys who are 1-2 years older than i am.

TheFirstMatt
01/17/07, 07:16 AM
That's fair.

When I was 15 I dated a 19 year old. How cool did I feel!

lucky_krystle

TheFirstMatt

Indeed! Again, didn't last though. I had bragging rights for two months at school though. If nothing, it was a confidance booster.

i would have never dated a guy in high school when i was 19. my brother always ends up dating older girls though. he dated a girl who was 2 years older than i am, and i am 2 1/2 years older than him.

I don't know how I feel about the half my age +7 thing. That'd be 19. I don't think I could date anyone under 21.

In your case, it really depends on her maturity level. If you get along and are on the same page with most things, then go for it.

Haha this quote is superb. Personally, i prefer the lawn mowed, but I know what you mean.

Update: Things are going just swell. There is a bit of a distance thing so I only see her once a week or so, on the phone every night though which is nice (because i do NOT like talking on the phone...to anyone). Taking her to London next weekend for a show etc etc.

And, I had no idead the legal consent age was different in different states. That's weird. I can imagine kids just going for a drive to the state line and then parking up! heh.

The legal age depends on your state so it varies. I think in some states it is 16 but I'm not sure. They also throw some marriage laws in there to make it even more complicated :-)
