View Full Version : How to fix the boards...

I have been a member of these forums for 5 months now, and in that time I have seen them doing well and seen them doing poorly. Lately the forums have been dead. So here is a list of problems and a list of possible solutions to help get the forums back to a good state.
First of all I think we have a huge problem with wasted posts and threads. People have a habit (especially of late) of making posts and threads that are absolutely pointless. Threads declaring a love of soap or that you are drunk don't need to exist. When I think about this problem I can think of two culprits who stick out the most, Lisha and Byron. I have never seen any semblance of a relevant post from either of these two and honestly I doubt they have the mental capacity. That being said the ability to fix this rests solely in the hands of the moderators. On other forums if you post something dumb, it gets deleted. There is no argument and no explanation the moderators just delete the unnecessary posts. This is what we need to do on the forums. Now I know there are a lot of posts and that this may be considered a pretty big job, but eventually it would register in most people's mind that if the posts are stupid and pointless, they're going to be deleted so we shouldn't waste our time making dumb ones.
Now I understand this creates a problem with what is pointless, and whether the moderators should be able to decide arbitrarily what is and isn’t a pointless post. But I trust Brandon and Bill and their judgment, so I don't think much of a problem would arise at all.
The other problem with wasted posts comes from people who give one word replies or who quote someone else's point and add nothing. If you're going to do this, don't post. It wastes space.
Second is the problem of repetitive threads. Once again it should be the job of the moderator to delete duplicate threads. We need only one thread discussing TBS' breakup, and we need just one praising Deja Entendu.
Another problem is the bandwidth. To solve this all that needs to happen is Tate must make it so that you must sign in to view comments on news items. Having thirty guests on the forum using half the bandwidth is unfair to the people who enjoy posting on the forums, so Tate needs to make it so you must sign in to view comments to fix this.
Next up is grammar. I think this could improve quite a bit. I know that not everyone attends Princeton (ahem) but I have to believe everyone knows how to punctuate. And please, read your posts before you send them, you can usually catch quite a few misspellings and errors this way. I don't have perfect grammar, but mine is better than most and all I do is take an extra minute to glance over my posts before I submit them, it's easy and it makes your posts a lot more intelligible.
And finally, I think we need to remember the forum is to discuss, so let's discuss, and let's do it intelligently. Just try to make an effort to be intelligent and avoid being unnecessarily dumb. Joking is fine, and I don’t even mind flaming, so long as it’s done intelligently and is appropriate.
This is a list of suggestions meant to be discussed intelligently. So please do, and add anything you can possibly think of to get the forums back to a point where it’s actually engaging to sign in and post.

bandwidth is a huge problem, but it doesn't fix the stupidity of some people on the boards.
it would work if we ALL worked together... and somehow fix it up

I agree that bandwidth is a huge problem. No one wants to post in a forum that they can't even get into. The guest also take way too much bandwidth, they should have to register to view threads. Some of them wouldn't take the time to register and therefore wouldn't log into the forum.
As for the Brand New, Taking Back Sunday and all those other bands maybe we can make seperate forums for band discussion.
I completely agree with Pat about grammar and trying to keep posts intellectual and relevant. We have numerous idiots posting shit that I would rather breathe saw dust than read. I am not sure how to solve this though other than flame them constantly, but that hasn't worked with people like Mrs. Skiba.
Pat, no offense, but who cares about the pointless threads? This is a forum, everyone is just here to kill time. I think you are making too big a deal about this.

some pointless thread are funny now and then i agree. but soem recently have been pretty stupid... like that one about horney guys or whatever. that didn't need to happen....
But it makes the forum interesting. If all we had were serious threads, it really wouldn't be that fun.

I want to transfer into an Ivy, most likely Princeton. I'll be attending The College Of New Jersey in the fall. Busta, no worries...those are great schools you listed, also.

Yes that sounds good actually. I'm not saying to get rid of every thread, but there are threads which are just idiotic and don't need to be left up. And also maybe the threads which are constantly remade, for instance all the senses fails threads, the Driv-Thru dropping Steel Train threads and the TBS threads. I think it would help make the boards a bit more interesting.

i noticed that the search function is disabled, and i think that threads wouldn't constantly be remade if it worked. some people are too lazy to look and see if there have already been threads made about their topic, and it would be much easier to be able to use the search for it. i'm not saying that everytime you consider making a thread you should search to see if someone has already thought of that, but if there's some question that it has been, you should use the search to see.
