Is American Idol ruining music? Personally, I'm not a huge fan due to the fact that people with no talent exploit and embarrass themselves on national television and the ones who truly are amazing often don't get alot of acknowledgement. Not to mention, Simon Cowel is treated like a celebrity for doing nothing but act like a selfishly rude git...

Are you serious? Have you ever even seen an entire season? They get no recognition? Ever hear of Kelly Clarkson? Clay Aiken? Carrie Underwood? They all have albums and all have amazing voices. The first few episodes always embarrass the people, that's how they get ratings. After they go to Hollywood, they get down to serious business. And Simon is acting totally different this season, not to mention he does have valid points with his arguments. American Idol itself is great for music, it brings out great voices hidden within America.

No, it's just making music a lot funnier. I love the American Idol auditions!

considering whoever wins american idol is stuck in a shitty contract that is nearly impossible to get out of it sucks. look at the fiasco kelly clarkson went through. it gives people a shot who might not get one any other way but in alot of ways it hampens careers with all the exclusive crap they make the winner do and restrictions they put on them. that one girl who won hasnt really done anything and alot of the times runners up and people who get voted out early wind up with careers, and more successful ones at that too so it does discover alot of "talent." im stuck in the middle and went with the last choice.

it brings people who dont know where to go to express the talent they think they have to take a shot in the dark.. its great for music.

all im going to say is, there are a few lasting idols, but the rest are just a flash in the pan and become has-beens just as quickly as they became superstars, so i don't conider the show to attribute to any "really-real" music scene, it's more or less piling more bodies on the pop culture heap.

no, Kelly Clarkson is one of the most talented pop singers i have heard in a long time.....and w/o american idol, she more inlikely wouldnt be were she is today.

yeah sometimes the winners dont make it as big, (Reuben/Fantasia) but still this show has helped alot of people out along with Clarkson; Clay Aiken, Carrie Underwood, Bo Bice, and Kimberley Locke have all had pretty nice careers.

some peoples careers would not exist without it...while the show makes more money in one season than those artists will see in a lifetime it is still a good opportunity for a voice to be heard.

Kelly Clarkson
Jennifer Hudson
2 really talented people who are doing well

Almost all of the winners seem to go nowhere, it doesn't really matter to me. The Auditions are hillarious though

No. Kelly Clarkson it's quite good.It is obvious for everyone that is mainstream pop, but that existed ever, and of course who hates mainstream pop don't have to see the show or buy the records from the winners.I'm not a fan, but it's quite simple to understand that things like American Idol keep the balance of the universe, well not everything in music colud be pitchforkmedia hype stuff isn't it?.

I love how people claim that they "hate" american idol and then reference something they saw on the show. (if you hate the show then why are you watching it?)

I think this show gives people an oppurtunity that they most likely would have never gotten, so no I don't think it's ruining music

Umm...no its not...i really don't understand the reasoning behind how it could be ruining music.

at least it produces pop stars who can actually sing.

First of all, American Idol is about pop music, which it barely makes a dent in. And if you ever get tired of the mainstream radio, there's thousands of bands and singers and genres to listen to.

it barely makes a dent? kelly clarksons albums have gone 2X platinum and 6X platinum, she has several number one hit songs plus grammy awards, people's choice awards, billboard awards, and others.

plus clay aiken has five albums, all but one have gone platinum, several times over. not to mention his christmas tours and specials. carrie underwoods album has gone platinum 5X and she has so many awards i can't even begin to list them, not to mention she's nominated for 4 grammy awards this year. kellie pickler didn't even make the top five last year and still has a record out that has been certified gold. daughtry's album debuted at number 2 on the billboard charts, selling more than the winners of season five and season four. it went platinum in less than a month, and is credited as "the fastest selling debut rock album in Soundscan history".

like the show or not, like the artists or not, it's a ridiculous statement to say it has barely made a dent in pop music.

american idol is good television, and most of the time people with outstanding singing abilities will be chosen regardless of what they look like, its also good how voters choose who is gonna be the american idol, instead of judges, thats why its so popular
