CTTS started either at the very end of the 90's or early 00's. They put out a demo in '03 I think? and then they put out their full-length "As The Roots Undo" in 2004. They're not old, 80's, or part of a dead movement. Hope y'all enjoy them. :-)

Screaming/yelled vocals does not make a band screamo.
I would just call most of those post-hardcore with innapropriately placed screaming vocals. I guess you could have called underoath metalcore when they came out with act of depression and that, but meh.
Any band that calls themselves drop dead gorgeous and actually takes themselves seriously... lololololol.

^to elaborate
Most of those bands play what can still be recognized as radio-ish pop-punk from the late nineties. They've just added a little bit more use of minor key signiatures as well as the inclusion of yelling/screaming. I still consider those bands a branch of the pop-punk scene (which in itself is still incorrect as people would use pop-punk to describe bands such as screeching weasel, descendents, and the bands spawned from those sounds), but I guess that's about as accurate as it can be.

they're all influenced by that jersey scene thursday's from and thursday's scene was that mix of pop punk and hardcore. i remember reading about how even bands like saves the day tried to be hardcore at one point (you can't hear it at all). it's just the fact that lifetime existed, and they were awesome, and everyone was like "oh we can be like them: hardcore and poppy", only they forgot the hardcore part.

I concede, you are correct :-) . I think on Saves the Day's first record, you can hear a lot of lifetime, but really toned down on the 'hardcore' aspects like you said.
I would like to add that I appreciate the fact that you hold actual intellectual music discussion and have failed to say so in the past.

I really like Saves the Day. They do their own thing, even when "their thing" got sort of popular and played out. And they dont compromise. They could have gotten a lot bigger than they are if they had wanted to, but they chose not to.
Ugh, Saves the Day. I like that Melt With You cover, though, just because I like that song. I even listen to the Mest cover from time to time. (Shoot me).

why does EVERYONE assume someone's trying to be cool if they listen to some DIY bands? It's not hard to download their music, and if you have any sort of pseudo-indie music store chain around, it's really not hard to BUY their music either. I don't think I'm cooler than anyone else because I listen to independent hardcore. I still listen to goddamn blink 182 and other such crap. The cred/cool argument is really getting old. Rodeo genuinely knows what he's talking about and enjoys DIY/Screamo/Hardcore, oh well.
No, you stfu. Just had to say it. And Hot Cross isn't exactly unknown, nor is it really a screamo band (their new album, at least), it just has members from other ones in it. And Screamo/Emo IS UNDERGROUND, BY ITS VERY DEFINITION (The DIY part). So just b/c the stuff he names is underground, that really doesn't matter at all in any of these arguments.
also, i believe Rodeo was the guy doing that pissing blood band anyways?

I'm pretty sure that's wrong. 15 in binary would be 1111.
2^0 + 2^1 + 2^2 + 2^3 = 15.
That would be 64 + 16 + 4 + 1 or 85.
EDIT: But, regardless, it's an amazing album.

Not really, the guitarwork isn't as messy/chaotic and they don't have very strict DIY principles. And there would be a lot less singing. And the whole thing would be a lot less processed (the vocals kill me).

there's no way to explain inhale screaming, other than its not screaming, and its fucking dumb
Yeah, thats what it looks like he was doing. It does sound like he was doing it through hyperventilating. Fairly certain. Also, he WAS doing a silverstein song haha. I remember a different screamo person being on american idol last year, as this appears different(That guy just walked off after simon said "No", the judges were pretty shocked, but didn't beat him down like they did this guy, it was a really short clip), but i couldn't find him.

blast beats are just really fast alternating of symbol and snare. The beginning of a good deal of the songs on Orchid's Gatefold (we'll give the example of "Chaos Ain't Me" here) use them and then slow down into the song. Another good example would be the louder/faster/more chaotic passages of Pageninetynine's "Ballad of Circling Vultures".
the thread
01/25/07, 11:48 PM
yeah, a lot of quirkier screamo bands use them at times. i mean, older neil perry makes use of blast beats at times. just like usurp synapse. but most often now, its a term most often use with grind.
and likewise, Bob.

Oh, I was thinking something like...I don't know. It is a drum thing? For some reason I was thinking it was like that really shoddy metalcore guitarwork that's I guess more or less the same thing you spoke of only on a guitar? But Orchid/Neil Perry are topnotch, so I'll just take your word for it when you speak of them positively. :-)

Mostly grind. But as said before, screamo uses it at times. Its really fast double bass and snare/symbol hits syncronized at a high speed. Im sure there are variations to it but that's my general understanding.

You more or less hit the nail on the head. D.R.I. used some blast beats in the '80's, I think. But yeah, grindcore, death and black metal are the genres that use blast beats most often. Someone mentioned Orchid, which is true. I once heard someone describe them as grind-emo haha. Kodan Armada is also another screamo band that seems to use them the odd time. My screamo band is starting to work with them a bit. Interesting stuff.

Good luck. Blast beats seem realllly hard. Then again I don't play drums but Im sure they take sheer talent. I love their sound though.
