So, just looking to get some feedback on how you all want to do this. Somebody suggested voting for the all-time best players in the 2000's, but I think it would be a lot better to go in more depth and do it since 1900. It'd be better for people looking up info. and giving a lot of arguments. So, just post in here and give some suggestions on what to do.

I would go since 1900, just because there are only 6 years to go by in the 2000's

my outfield would be mays, mantle, ruth and that's all i know so far. i'll be racking my brain for the next few days with this.

Anyone accused of steroids, whether they have great stats or not, should be left off from the start.

Well, if we're doing 1900+, we need to start nominating catchers so I can get this thing rolling with a poll.

nominees for catchers, so far I have:
Bench, Berra, Campanella, Fisk, Cochrane, Piazza

I'd like to get 10 before starting a poll.

edit:
Here are some others I'd like to nominate:
Gabby Hartnett
Bill Dickey
Ted Simmons
Ivan Rodriguez
Ernie Lombardi

So, just nominate more or help me narrow it to 10.

basically.

and I think 1900 is just too far back. I'd be game for something from 1990 - present. It'll be kind of stupid, IMO, to argue who was better when dudes played 70 years before anyone posting here was born.

Maybe like 1950? At first I said 1900 but now I can see why 1950 is probably more appropriate.

1990-present doesn't even really present a good debate. Look at the stats, compare them to the game and players at the time, and just choose. Doesn't seem stupid to me. It's been done numerous times.

bigmike
01/20/07, 07:33 PM
yeah, it's been done numerous times. the All-Century team MLB did a few years ago is adequate for this. I just don't see the point in trying to replicate it using people who played 50, 60, 70, 80, years ago. I'm all for debating the past and players and i like talking about the history of baseball, or other sports, but i just think it's way too wide of a range.

Well, maybe we can come at a compromise like someone else said: 1950-present. I really don't see the difference though. I just don't see how a 1990-present would bring that good of a discussion, especially considering a lot of the stars have steroids surrounding them.

i agree. i'm of the belief that early baseball might have been easy. i know it sounds weird but what if wagner and cap anson and the early 1900 people were only good because the pitchers sucked. i've always wondered why the batting averages were so high then.

ForlrnPerplxity
01/21/07, 12:13 PM
I think we should start from 1930+, since that's when players started adapting to Ruth and pretty much was the foundation of the game we see today.

The pitchers didn't suck. It was just a completely different game then. They didn't have anything resembling the gloves we have today, the balls were mush, and the outfield fences stretched to oblivion.

C: Bench (No brainer for me.BTW i dont understand how people have Fish and Piazza over IROD)
1B: Lou Gehrig
2b: Rogers Hornsby (i think hands down the greatest 2nd basemen ever to live)
3b: George Brett (surprised no one mentioned him)
SS: Honus Wagner (Ended Career as the greatest player ever)
OF: Ty Cobb (Duh)
OF: Ted Williams (best hitter ever)
OF: Babe Ruth (best player ever)
