The Postal Service (http://www.absolutepunk.net/thepostalservice)'s music is playing in an advertisement (http://andrewteman.org/blog/2007/01/07/whoops-ups-ads-pimp-postal-service/) for UPS. I mentioned this in the game thread today (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?p=5453817#post545381 7), and apparently others noticed too.

Yeah, I saw that commercial a few days ago. Definitely bizarre. Both for the fact that the song is 3 years old now, and because it's The Postal Service on a commercial for UPS.

hasn't this happened before? i remember a little after give up came up- or atleast started getting noticed there was a ups or maybe just a usps commerical with one of their songs in it.

they just copied the U.S.P.S (united states postal service)... they had that songs in their commercial like 2 years ago...UPS just copied them...regardless, the song rules.

Isn't this due to the issue where UPS was asking The Postal Service to change their name but they had a compromize where The Postal service is allowed to keep their name the same as long as the United Postal Service could use any of their songs in their comercials?

I guess it just took them awhile to do it.

The people at UPS probably just thought it would be clever.

It's marketing, they want people our age to pay attention.

this is like if nike were to use a song by a band called reebok in one of their commercials. weird

YCfan
01/21/07, 11:07 PM
and the rest of the commercial is the same.

Drawing out pictures and being witty with the humor, it is very smart

edit-- i wouldn't really call it smart i guess because it is behind the curve but all things considered it is pretty original for a delivery service

UPS stands for 'United Parcel Service'... not postal.

but still ironic none the less

a couple years ago the us postal service sued the band for copyright violation because of their name. they settled, and as part of the agreement the usps was allowed to use their music in commercials and, if i'm remembering correctly, ben and jimmy agreed to play at some usps convention which is probably the funniest thing about the whole arrangement.

They play it where I work too, Pick N Save (grocery store). I found that very odd, because they usually play crappy 80's/90's soft rock. Yuckkk. But I got all excited when they played SGH, and no one I work with had even heard of The Postal Service. Sad sad world we live in.

UPS is not The USPS. Ive never seen an ad for The USPS using The Postal Service's music yet...
