Florida Supreme court said it was now ok for minors to get an abortion without informing their parents. May I remind you that they still cannot get piercings or tatoos until the age of 18 though.

hmm.... slightly disturbing. i always liked the idea of choice because it should be a decision made by the inividual and their family.... not the governemnt. bu this.... i can se both sides.i eman yeah its ultimately up to th inividual, but trusting an emotionally ditraught minor to make that kind o secision....
its not just you BRandNew...coming from somone who is adamantly pro-chocie this is a bit disturbing.

For this I am putting aside all pro-life feelings. This is a major surgery. Parents need to be informed. I mean these girls cant even buy a pack of cigarettes, but they can ability to terminate a future human life without notifying their parents. And think of the emotional and physical changes they will go through after an abortion, the parents will have no clue whats going on. Parents need to know somethings. And I think that terminating a future human life could qualify as one of those, call me crazy, but parents definentaly need to be involved in this situation.

Parents opinion is vital to the decision-making process. As a member of the National Campaign to prevent Teen Pregnancy's Youth Leadership Team, I spread the word on teen-pregnancy prevention any way I can - from handing out safe-sex flyers at high schools and coffee shops where I live to appearing on news shows to running my own anti-pregnancy program - so I know what a big deal teen pregnancy is. I also know that when a girl gets into this situation, she needs to consult with her parents about what to do.
Teens have enough to deal with - from raging hormones to peer pressure - and a decision like whether to have an abortion is too big to handle alone. In so many other ways, minors aren't allowed to take on adult responsibilities. Legally they can't vote, drink or smoke, so why should getting an abortion be different?
These laws reflect how important it is for teens to let their parents know what's going on in their lives. And abortion can be physically and psychologically draining. By making girls talk about the situation with their parents, these laws encourage them to mentally process it all ahead of time. If a girl gets an abortion without telling her parents and then gets depressed or goes into shock, they may not know how to help Sharing hte information better ensures the girl's health and safety. Having an abortion is not a decision to be taken lightly, and parents have the right to know.

Parental notification laws are wrong. It would be great if teens always felt comfortable telling their parents about life-altering decisions but sometimes it's not in their best interest to do so. And I'm one who knows: I was a scared 16 year old staring at a positive pregnancy test. My parents are pro-life activists - the last people who would understand that I wanted an abortion. But because Texas has a parental notification law, I had to tell them. They told me I had to have the baby, and I soon went from being a good student who loved life to a pregnant runaway who dropped out of high school. Luckily, with the help of my grandmother, who I now live with, I got my aboriton.
These laws make it difficult for teenage girls to benefit from a right that women fought for more than 30 years ago. They take a teen's right to decide what's best for her life and place it in her parents' hands. If you choose to have sex and you become pregnant, you should be able to decide what comes next. Keep in mind: there's no law that says a girl can't become a mother without letting her parents know! As girls, our rights are being taken away. A teen should make the choice herself whether to have an abortion, no matter how her parents feel about it.

I'm very torn on this issue. A few years back I saw this show on HBO called Life Stories: Families in Crisis. The show retells a real tragic event, and at the end a family member or friend gives a public service announcement. The episode was with a girl who felt she couldn't tell her parents about her pregnancy, and so she had to seek an illegal abortion. The doctor used dirty tools and she died the next day. Her parents gave the service announcement. It was very sad. I worry about this happening to other girls. However, for the most part I agree with Caitlin. In most cases, its in the best interest for the girl to notify her parents. And if her parents react in an extreme way like Jordan's, than they weren't good parents to begin with, and the teen is better off with someone else. I just hope most teens have a someone else to run to or at least a good relationship with there parents.

I guess, but then I'm not really ultra left then. I think it's mainly the individual's responsibility to be socially concious, and the government can help out some.

but if its the individuals respondsibility shouldn't we drop the age requirements on marriage, tattoo's, drinking, tabacoo, driving, working, ect, ect, ect,...........seeing as how a person should know what they can and can't handle?

Those are examples of the government helping out some.
(Don't mean to generalize, we can take those on a case by case basis if you want.)
I was thinking more along the lines of a wealthy individual giving money to underprivelged citizens when I said socially concious.

they aren't taking away parental control by saying you don't have to notify parents first. If a girl wants an abortion, she's going to get despite her parents objections.

no. if you need a parent to get one, the doctor will not "ok" the abortion without parental consent.

so its not just notification, its also consent? Well, than I'm against parental consent, fully. But I do think that its better to have the notification law.

Why? They are minors! Hey, you can kill a child but you cant pierce your ear....?

peircing your ear, and having a baby are two drastically different things. (but i also dont think you need parental notification about getting a peircing). Your parents cannot, and should not, force their daughter to go through with a pregnancy. Its her body she's allowed to say what happens to it. Abortions aren't typically dangerous, they are more safe than childbirth, so their really isn't enough to danger, in a girl having a legal abortion w/ out parents' permission. I worry more about her having an illegal one because her parents are jackasses, and then she could die.

You have to be 16 for an ear peircing and 18 for anything else, with out a parents concent, at least here in kansas.......why shouldn't simalar rules be in place for the taking of a life....it doesn't make sense......

not being allowed to get your ear peirced, and not being allowed to have an abortion will have very different reprecussions. Being forced to have a child is a huge, and its a decision that belongs to the pregnant girl, and only her. If parents are allowed to decide that their daughter should not have an abortion, than they can also force her to have one, on the flip side.
now I have to go eat lunch, so I can pick this debate up later.

i personally don't think a 16 yr old has the mental abiltiy to destroy a life or the knowledge of what these actions will do to her life in the future knowing what shes done..........

I'm not sure what the laws are here in regards to minors needing parental consent to have an abortion. I'll ask my mom when she gets home. In regards to piercings, you have to be 16 to get one without parental concent because its not concidered to be permanent, how ever things like tattoos and punchings which are concidered permanent require parental concent for anybody under the age of 18.
