Before I even read this article, I have to share a jeremy story.
One night during Anberlin's recording of their new record "cities", Jeremy came down to the bar where myself, Aaron Sprinkle, Timmy McTague (Underoath), Stephen, Deon, and Joey (anberlin), and Justin (vendetta red/with friends like these) were hanging out. After awhile, Joey decided that he wanted to go back to Sprinkles studio and work on the new record. Jeremy wanted to go to the studio, and also thought an impromptu jam session was necessary. Most of us, upon this being our first encounter with the great Mr. Enigk, were totally stoked and amazed. Of course we would! Long story short, I jammed on toy-piano next to Jeremy on guitar, and all the rest of these guys on various instruments to an impromptu noise session at 2 am during the recording of anberlin's new record "cities."
I bet that doesn't make the DVD though. I think Reid was done filming by that point... oh well. memories. And, Jeremy Enigk, is THAT awe inspiring.

That was very good article. I saw him in late in November with Cursive and he was amazing.
Oh and I missed him in December due to a friends graduation, but my other friend went and decided he wanted a beer before the show. He went to a bar next door and sat down to order one. Next thing he knows he looks to his right and Jeremy Enigk was sitting right there. He ended up having a beer with him and said Jeremy was one of the coolest dudes he's ever met.

Enigk is intense live. No question.
But that article sucks. Since when is emo = emotionally charged pop? The article doesn't even mention "World Waits", which is amazing.

But that article sucks. Since when is emo = emotionally charged pop? The article doesn't even mention "World Waits", which is amazing.Ever since that band called The Fall Out Boys released their first record, called FUCKT. After that a new band called Brand New released Deja Entendu, then Dashboard cried on someone's hair, then Jermy Enigk joined Mineral and made an album called Clarity. Then an article made fun of it, calling it a sadder, more melodic version of hardcore, after which the "Society of Depressed Rebel Emos" (SDRE for short) decided on the name.

Jeremy is amazing. Almost as amazing as Anberlin.
Just checking the source of the interview and what they believe. I'm not condemning anyone but...
"Thirdly is the utter centrality of Jesus. Christians are people who find the decisive revelation of God in Jesus, in a person. That means when Jesus and the Bible [contradict] each other, Jesus trumps the Bible." - Dr. Marcus Borg (http://www.explorefaith.org/whoweare.html)
But wait Dr. Borg didn't you also say,
"You could even say [Islam, Judaism, Buddhism] are all divinely given paths to the sacred." - Dr. Marcus Borg (http://www.explorefaith.org/questions/credence.html)
So does Jesus trump other belief systems? If not then doesn't that make him a liar? "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." - Jesus the Christ (http://www.ibs.org/niv/wordsearch.php?word_request=I+am+th e+way&submit=Search&selected_version=niv&match_type=phrase&limit_select=span&start_book=0&end_book=0&limit=10&sortby=bookorder)
I love Jeremy Enigk and his music and I have no problem with other people believing what they want. However, I have a problem with those who claim only the truths of the Bible that seem to fit their context and disregard everything else. How can you believe in something that is fundamentally fallible? How can one consciously follow a belief system that they themselves find faulty? For all his intellect Dr. Borg isn't very bright. (says the guy without the PhD)
Sorry, I'm working on homework and this just caught my attention. I mean no disrespect to Mr. Enigk and I only wish I could plink around on a toy piano while he played guitar (and sang?). If anyone wants a decent picture of a "Christian" in the scene right now might I suggest Stephen Christian of anberlin? Schweet!

(Oh yeah, I might catch a lot of flack for this post but I'm ready... unless you get personal then I'll just have to fart in your general direction.)

Thanks for this extremely old article Drew. I don't know why this needed to be brought up now. I think he's actually brought up recently how he's backed off his extreme commitment to Jesus although he is still spritual. Was this just an attempt to push Jesus more to the absolutepunk readers? I'm just wondering....

How is this "pushing?" Tate obviously believes in Drew's news gathering ability and discernment. You were the one who clicked on the post and (possibly) read the article and discussion. Man, I sound mean right now but I don't mean to be.

Last year, Sinéad O’Connor told MAGNET that she wanted her music to be spiritual but the idea of making Christian rock would just horrify her. You’re also up front about your spirituality, but you seem pretty removed from Christian rock.
Well, Christian rock seems to sell God. No offense to Christian bands—that’s my little disclaimer, always: “No offense, guys!” But yeah, I am a spiritual person. I totally agree with her comment. It tends to become a formula and not from the heart. In fact, I was having this conversation last night with somebody, how you start going through the motions if only to impress your Christian brethren and sisters. You’ve got to speak it from the heart, if you truly have this relationship or feeling, you know—tell the truth. A lot of the lyrics are always just the same praising. There’s nothing wrong with praising, but I have no problem wrestling with God. Or wrestling with the idea of God. I think it’s good to doubt. I think it’s good to look at the other side of that, as opposed to doing the formula, just doing it to make yourself look like you love God. And that’s really only to impress your fellow Christians, you know?
Did you notice a shift in your fan base after you announced your conversion to Christianity?
I didn’t notice anything, because when I announced it ... I’ve always sorta been a Christian. I just had an epiphany one day and wrote this big letter. Sunny Day was the big buzz at the time, or one of the bands that a lot of people were looking at. The fan base and the buzz alone was pretty big, so I didn’t really notice a huge change. It became a hot topic, as opposed to making more fans or sending other fans packing because they just didn’t agree. It became a discussion, really, which is great. Which is fine with me. I had a revelation. I had an epiphany, and I exploded in such a crazy way that it’s funny how that evened out. It’s not a giant flame anymore; it’s like a slow-burning fire that’s going to last a lot longer.

All that says is that he is now even stronger in his faith because he questions himself and God on a daily basis instead of having blind faith. Most everyone has epiphanies or wake-up calls in their Christian lives - it's what you do afterwards that defines you. That's what he meant with the slow-burning fire that will last a long time. How you managed to misinterpret that into thinking he's less of a Christian or believes less in God baffles me. I think he has a great head on his shoulders for that. And trust me, as a Christian working at Absolutepunk for well over 2 years, I can assure you that there is anything BUT a Christian agenda towards our readers.
I don't even know what Magnet Magazine is. How can you hold newsposters to a standard of posting things they've never seen or heard about? We post what we come across or what gets submitted to us. I see THIS Enigk interview show up in my gmail all the time - not the one you posted.

He's saying he doesn't need to spread the word of Jesus through his music anymore which that OLD article claims that he wanted to do bc he was still in his epiphany phase. I'm only holding newsposters to a standard of posting interviews that at least relate to their current album. Also, if you're going to post a 6 month old interview, let readers know that it is that old, especially when that person's views have changed.
