View Full Version : Who do you want to run in 2012?

Senator Sherrod Brown (D - Ohio) - Former teacher, and since I'll be going into teaching in 2012, I'd want someone in the White House who understands education. He's a huge proponent of LGBT rights and favors a singe-payer health care system.
Senator Bernie Sanders (I - Vermont) - Call me a bandwagon jumper, but I'd heard about Bernie Sanders before his 9 hour filibuster and just never felt the inspiration to actually check him out. Glad I finally did though. Not only is he pro-choice, pro-LGBT, fiscally responsible, and favors single payer health care, but he also focuses a lot of issues not many politician dedicate much time to, like breaking up the media conglomerates. Plus, he's a socialist. Legit.
Motherfucking Representative Jan Schakowsky (D - Illinois) - I don't think any other congressperson has such an outstanding record of standing their ground and speaking up for the little guy. Strong stances on environmental issues, single-payer health care, pro-choice, responsible foreign policy, and understands economics from her experience was a superhuman fund raising machine.
Representative Linda Sanchez (D - California) - Cause she talk a whole lotta shit and walk around like she President Carter's bitch.
Representative John Olver (D - Massachusetts) - Another former educator. He's in favor of single-payer health care, is unforgivably pro-choice, has a good handle on immigration reform, and favors conservative foreign policy decisions rather than trying to be the world's bully, but also understands that major human rights violations around the world shouldn't just be ignored or "strongly condemned."

Democratic primary challengers have no to little chance of actually winning the nomination and would severely damage Obama. In otherwords progressives need to swallow their pride and realize that Obama is the best we're going to get.

What? No. Sorry, I should've been more specific. Obama isn't getting my vote for Democratic nominee. I hope a democrat has the balls to challenge him for the nomination.
Edit: Also, Feingold lost his senate seat, so although I think it'd be neat if he challenged Obama, it'd be even more hopeless than anyone else doing it.

While I don't disagree that competition would be nice, I do believe that it would hurt the Democratic party in the long run. It would be hard to get voters behind Obama (if he ends up being the nominee, which he most likely would) because Republicans would tear him apart by claiming that even his own party didn't back him as President 100%. It's just not worth it, in my opinion. Plus, I really think that Obama would most likely do a lot more in his second term because he wouldn't have to worry about getting re-elected. I know that sounds messed up, but that's just the nature of politics.

While you may not be happy with Obama, it's pretty far fetched to believe that any Democrat is going to win the nomination. Unless there is a major revolt against Obama within his own party, the likeliest scenario is that he'll win the nomination with little to no effort. Even with the present uproar within the party over the current tax proposal, there's still a very strong consensus that the more outspoken Democrats are disagreeing but still supporting him as President. In almost all cases, they've made that distinction pretty clear.
On the republican side, it will be interesting to see who puts their hat in the ring. Obviously, Palin will. Looks likely that Huckabee will as well as Romney. On professional merit alone, I don't think any of those are even contenders. That being said, the nation is full of crazy crazy people who seem to think Palin is a real contendor. I certainly hope that isn't the case.

well I'm not going to defend the people you've met, but everyone I know who likes him are just libertarians who think Republicans and Democrats are ignoring the problem of huge deficit spending and how it could affect us later. Idk I feel like he's one of the few people that's offering real solutions to reducing the size of government even if it's a bit draconian, but we do have an almost $14 trillion dollar debt so it needs to be addressed. If we didn't have this problem then Ron Paul would be a nobody.

I'm not trying to refute the point that you can choose to not vote if you'd like to. You're absolutely correct that you have the right to not contribute to the voting process. I just don't understand why someone would intentionally choose not to vote, simply because you can. And who is making such a big deal about you not voting? Who's oppressing your opinion so much that it makes you so upset?
But while we're on the subject, are you making some sort of point by not voting? Are you choosing not to vote because you're happy with the way things are? By not voting, your opinion means nothing in the decision making process. By not voting, you're essentially empowering those that you may disagree with. You have to see the logic in that. For each member of the non-voting minority, you give those who vote the power to pass policy that you're unhappy about and that could potentially be harmful to our society.
But you are right my angry friend. You have the power to exercise your right not to vote. You have the right to do a lot of foolish things in America. But should you? Perhaps that's a better question.

On the one hand, yes, you're right. By not choosing someone then I am empowering the people that may be elected. I didn't mean at all to sound like I was somehow above the voting process, I just think that nine times out of ten, you're simply choosing between the lesser of two evils. Since I'm 21, its not like there have been too many elections for me to pass up, but I can't say that I have supported any presidential/senatorial/gubanatorial candidate that I've seen ever.
I hate to sound like the "I don't trust politicians" guy, but there's some truth to that. Why vote for someone just because you don't support the person they're running against? Thats the problem I have with voting: politicians tend to be self serving and no where near proactive enough in helping te country; thats why I choose not to vote for either one. Why settle?

I understand not trusting politicians. I don't think there are very many people still thinking that a politician is going to be our savior. But there's a whole lot more to voting than who the President is. There are several proposals each election that decide specific policies and without the input of the public (and their votes), these things which can really help serve the needs of the people will continue to go unsupported and lose. It's only by people voting that equal rights and other important legislation will come about.
And in terms of the "lesser of two evils", I completely agree with you. Sometimes those are the only options left. I understand this is just one example, but consider for a second the choices in the last election. You had Obama and McCain. If you take just the war for example and examine their positions, you'll find McCain saying that he envisioned the military being in Afghanistan for 100 years or more if needed while Obama saying he wants to systematically start bringing troops home. While neither candidate is perfect, there's a HUGE difference in policy there and we can see the difference already with what Obama has been planning and already started in terms of the war. Each candidate comes with specifics that they will push for and try to make reality. While neither will be perfect, it's important to research the principles each stands for and vote for the person that will align with your beliefs the most. As always though, you have the right not to vote. I personally just find it to be a little foolish when there are so many things worth voting for. It's not so black and white as some people make it.

Awesome. To be honest, it's only been within the last couple of years that I've started to involve myself more in researching the issues. I think I felt similar to you for a long time and on some levels, still do. Researching the issues doesn't always (almost never) take away the frustration but it's made me more eager to stay involved. Anyway...no hard feelings I hope.
None at all homie. I'm sure we'll bump into each other again in the jungle of AP haha.

Is it because he's Mormon?
People are saying he will be simply based on the early polling, even though these are the same people who will weeks later say that these polls namely just show who has the most name recognition.
And it's not because he's mormon, though that doesn't help. It's because he makes McCain look like the maverick he says he is.

I dont mean to offend anyone but I dont think Sarah Palin is going to get elected in 2012. By electing our first black president, i think we ahve reached our height of 'radicalism' for our time period. Having out first black president than our first woman president? doesnt seem realistic. John Thune from South Dakota is considering running, and i think he would have a pretty decent shot.

I actually DO think that her being a woman is a detriment. She's ruined female politicians for a whole lot of people. She has only herself to blame. Same goes for Whitman, O'Donnell, and any other woman who feeds into stereotypes. It's a shame.

radical was a bad word to use. its 'out of the norm'. all of our presidents have been white males. I think taking one giant step electing an african american president will make america not want to take such a leap in the near future. and what does being a south dakotan have to with that?

I don't contest your right not to vote. I just find it to be counter productive in the progression needed in our country, especially with the current state of affairs.
