yeah if your a Godspeed fan (who isn't these days?) its kinda similar, except the songs are shorter, theres a higher concentration of vocals (some singing even!), and its alot more minimalistic then the sprawling GY!BE stuff

A Silver Mt. Zion is pretty tight. Godspeed was better though.

i like a Silve Mt. Zion more than GY!BE, i just think its more original
then again GY!BE pretty much rewrote the post-rock genre

i really like the Earth is Not A Cold Dead Place but for EITS to get better they would have to expand upon their sound, every album sounds the same for the most part
i just like Earth because its happy post-rock (yeah i hate to use that term), and its a good album, not amazing/groundbreaking , but a good and solid record

Newer bands do the EITS-sound better than EITS at this point.

yeah, as a matter of fact i saw a band that did the EITS sound last night, they have like 4-guitarist and are just fucking amazing their called Portrait of a Drowned Man, i think they have a myspace, the nice thing about them is that their songs are only like 5-minutes instead of like 20 (i only say that because some bands think all their songs have to be over 10 minutes)

Horses in the Sky is their weakest by far in my opinion. In Born Into Trouble... and He Has Left Us Alone... I got the distinct feeling that Effrim knew he couldn't sing but felt that throwing in a few bars here and there couldn't hurt, and it made for an extremely enjoyable listen. With Horses in the Sky, it seems as though Effrim got it in his head that he in fact had the pipes to bring his voice to the forefront a bit and that, in my opinion, was an awful mistake.

like you said in the EITS thread, its a matter of personal preference, i find Efrim's vocals to be extremley enjoyable
and saying that Born Into Trouble/He Has Left Us are their best albums is kinda off i think, at that period Efrim and co. were experimenting with taking the "rock" element out of "Post-rock", on their later albums the experimentation with other instruments (exp: "God Bless Our Dead Marines" uses traditional middle-eastren instruments), the higher focus on vocals, and just the general feel of the music shows that they are trying to break away from the "post-rock by the numbers" feel that all the bands that rip them off sound like.

So you're saying that because they changed their sound you can't judge albums from different periods against each other... I don't agree. In my opinion, Born Into Trouble... is the best and most fully actualized album in their repetoire. I agree that they made a marked and distinct change in their sound, but I do not feel that the albums are different enough to warrant not judging them against each other.

well what i guess my opinion is that when ASZM released their first two albums, GY!BE was still together, after Godspeed claimed extended hiatus it left Efrim with ASZM, so he it looks like he took everything he wanted to do with GY!BE and began doing it with ASZM
i can see your view, but hell its all just personal preference, and when it comes to vocals everyone looks at someone's voice a differant way.

Time to revive a thread.
I saw these guys tonight with about 300 other people at most in a tiny church. Got to talk with Efrim for 30 minutes or so before the show about a whole host of random shit, really cool guy and... much more normal than you would probably imagine him. They played hardly anything off of 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons, most was new, unreleased material, and very good stuff at that. This group is really at the top of their game, and they put on one hell of a beautiful show.

I never find myself spinning 13 Blues.
Me neither, though I think it's their best song writing. For some reason, I enjoy live rips of this band a lot more, I have been listening to those pretty frequently, unfortunately I've only sat down with my vinyl copy of 13 Blues two or three times.

Definitely, I feel like most of the time I can put GY!BE on and enjoy it, but with Efrim's vocals, I don't really know, it just requires a bit more focus and interest in really listening.

Their first release He Has Left Us Alone... is mostly instrumental; but every other album has more vocals. I'd recommend "This is Our Punk Rock," or "Pretty Little Lightning Paw" both of those are before Horses and are my second and third favorite releases respectively.
