I just wanted to know what your definition of selling out is, what are your top sell out bands are and what your perfect band maybe be like?

i think that selling out is when a band comes out with there first cd that is there own style of music but when there new cd comes out, it sounds like what is main stream popular at the time. It dosent matter if you change your style of music such as green day has changed alot after dookie. But i also know that bands want to make money because it is their living so there is nothing wrong with that, they just shouldnt over do it. some bands that have sold out due to my opinion is probably good charlotte, blink, and possibly nfg. Simple plan and the rejects in my mind couldnt have not sold out because they have only came out with one cd. There has been no way for them to change their music. But some may say that simple plan sold out cause their on mtv all the time and did a tour with avril. well when a record company or your manager says we'll give you the opening slot for a world wide tour with an artist that is currently number one in the world, and you'll get a decent amount of money and recognition, would you say no?

No Doubt would be a much better example than Good Charlotte...GC's CD's sound the same, so they dont really fit that definition of selling out.

And No Doubt...geeze...from spiderwebs to hey baby? You gotta be kidding me.

I wouldn't say blink sold out based on one of the other people's definitions...they didn't change their style from buddah to enema...ya they got a little more serious with each album but it's that whole coming of age thing. You know, Bildungs Roman...or something like that. But anyway, ya they didn't change all that much...i think just doing the right things at the right time doesn't constitute selling out...and with their video for All the small things...they had no clue they would be mistaken for a pop band...maybe the producers and stuff did, but not them...but hey, it gave em fame which is what every band wants. i think selling out is a term jealous losers use when bands get famous while they're band is still playing parties for 13 year olds.

richter915
07/17/03, 06:53 AM
I do think that Mest can be considered a sell out...or they are selling out...look at their "wasting time" and "destination unknown"...it was pop punk stuff right?...now look at their self-titled...it's pretty close to screamo...trying to rip off bands like TBS and Finch almost...i mean i love Mest and i can't wait to see em at warped...but they did change their style big time...sucks kinda. And i think you can say the same for Homegrown, Midtown, and the Movielife...but i'm not sure. A band that i now respect a lot if sum41...even though their first album was kinda...horrible...the one they released the uh...does this look infected...this is what they really wanna do...and it sounds great.

sell outs are bands who change their style of music for another just to try and make it big. thats something alot of bands do. and most of the time it sucks

the definition of a sell out is ..............good charlotte but then agian they all ways sucked ass so i dont know if that would concider them sell outs.

GC never once said they wouldn't be whores to 12 year olds everywhere. So, no matter how little talent they have, or how low their morals are, they didn't sellout.

But. Rancid said they'd never sign to a major. They said it for years. And look what they did! Signed to a major for the big bucks. Rancid sold out.

Sum 41 sold out, they said they only played pop-punk to get fans, and sell records, then play what they really wanted to play. So they changed to get popular.

You have no fucking clue what gothic is, so don't even mention that. And maybe you don't like their new sound, but that doesn't mean they've sold out.

who cares who they tour with?

how did Green Day sell out? they never changed their music to get people to like them. they experimented with Warning though and it is different... but if anything people hated them for it. so they definently didn't sell out.

i think selling out is when a band changes to get a bigger fan base. whether they are on MTV or what not doesnt mean anything, as long as they dont change. and some bands deserve to get big because they are good enough.

They didn't change their music Greg? Listen to "Jaded" off of Insomniac or "2000 Light Years Away" from Kerplunk! and then listen to "Minority" from Warning....

They call themselves the greatest live punk band ever. They toured with blink, a band they openly hated, for money. So i believe they did.

But yes, warning's music was much different, but they didn't change it to get popular, they already were popular, so that's not a justifiable statement you guys.

On another note, Bad religion only toured with blink, to scare the hell out of the kids. But, blink asked them to tour with them. And BR were good friends with Green day before they went big. But green day wouldn't let BR tour with them. Greg said that Billie Joe would always reply," It would be wierd." I always found that intresting.

Well yea....... but they seemed to enjoy themselves. And they didn't blow up like GC. Here is what Jay actually said. From my favorite interview. www.punkrocks.net

Jordan: I wanted to ask about your tour with Blink 182 - I understand that you were trying to reach out to a larger audience....

Jay: No that's not true, that's not true at all. You can quell that by saying, how do you expect a band like Bad Religion to gain acceptance from, what turned out to be a bunch of screaming 13 year old girls who just got over Britney Spears? They're not interested in us at all, our goal was the scare the shit out of them, because it was fun. We did the tour because it was something else to do. There was never any intention of achieving a wider fan base from Blink's audience, that was never going to happen.

Jordan: Was it financially successful?

Jay: No way, we'd make more money on our own, but what's the point? We've done ten thousand tours, and one of the things is, when Green Day blew up, I considered them to be our closest friends of a band that had just gotten huge, and they wouldn't ask us to go on tour with them. I actually even asked them, I said take us out, and they were just like "no that's embarrassing for us" and I was just saying, fuck it don't worry about it, we want to open for you guys, and still they said it would be too weird. And when the Offspring blew up, it was the same thing "no it would be uncomfortable." We we just said, fuck you guys, that's insulting. So then Blink 182 comes in and says "Would you guys tour with us? We know it's totally stupid," and we just said of course. Why not? It'll be fun. Let's go play some stadiums, since chances are we'll never be playing there on our own. So for once in your lifetime, to go on that tour and play the biggest places you could possibly play, with one of the biggest bands you could possibly play with at the time, you can't really replace that with very many things.

Kevin: So you guys had fun doing the tour then?

Jay: Oh fuck yeah it was hilarious. It was great. We had no responsibilities, we didn't have to carry a PA, we didn't have to worry about anything. We basically just showed up, some of us got hammered every night, rode around on skateboards and played for 45 minutes in front of fifty thousand people, it was great.

East Bay = San Francisco
East Coast = New York

There is a bit of a difference. I think Davey's pretty well-adjusted. He feels entirely comfortable to act exactly as he pleases, it's much better than trying to conform to gender stereotypes.

I never pictured NFG to sell out. I could be the minority in saying this, but I actually liked Sticks and Stones better that their older stuff. Offspring is a wierd case, because its almost like they sold out for 2 or 3 songs on each of their popular records. Listen to their latest "conspiracy of one". Most of the album sounds like their older, better stuff, except for the few singles like Original Prankster.
