Universities may be the site of intellectual conversation according to popular culture, but for every conversation about Determinism, the Duhem-Quine thesis, etc... there are at least 20 like this:
guy: I can't believe our (pronounces it "are," or 'R') teacher is making us read this racist shit. I thought colleges were supposed to all liberal and shit.
chick: I know, Mark Twain is like so racist."
guy 2: (throws his copy of Huck Finn into the trash)...
1) I hate my generation, if you think Mark Twain was a racist, please end your life, now!
2) what sort of student hasn't read Huck Finn until university level?
3) what sort of professor assigns Huck Finn at a university?

I have always believed that school is what you make of it, I did shitty in high school but that doesnt mean I was stupid, I just didnt care. Once I got to college I found the things I was studying a hell of a lot more interesting and I graduated with a 3.7 GPA as opposed to my 1.2 GPA in high school. Then again, there were kids I graduated from high school with who had 3.7 GPAs then and they are in jail or working at Taco Bell now.

I agree completely...I had a good GPA in high scool, but never felt challenged, and now in college, it is the opposite. I am finally challenging myself to learn things that are beyond what I already know. High school was basically nap time..

Haha...yep. I spent about 1/2 a semester studying racism and Huck Finn and the controversy surrounding it. The intricacy of references in the story are surprising...notice that the number 40 is used a LOT in the book, especially towards the end...referencing 40 acres and a mule. I read so much stuff on that that I dont even remember half of it...my brain just overloaded

I would hope that high school kids would understand it. I rescind number 3, that was uncalled for on my part.
I am increasingly saddened at the number of students I have come across that have not read Huck Finn. How do people get through school not having read the first great satirical work of the Americas? and then those who I have met, think it was terrible because of the last act, or they don't remember the last act.

1) Yes it is. It's number 31, and has been climbing very quickly for the last 5 years.
2) The only reason you say "Jewish school" is try and disgrace my school. As if there is something wrong with being jewish. My school is about half-jewish, and unless you're a judaic studies major, you see no judaic influence of campus besisdes the kid with the occasional yarmulke.

2. Can you read my mind? Did I ever say because it was Jewish based that it was a bad school? No, I was simply stating a fact that your school is Jewish based university, and I did not come across it on any of those lists. My school happens to be a Catholic and is in the same kind of boat your school is in. If it wasn't for the buildings and religious studies major no one would really know that it's a Catholic school.
