So, I have never written a show review yet, but I am now...
Last night I took a trip up to The Meridian to check out the Kill Hannah tour, and here's how it went...
The show started before the doors opened (technically) with a local band called 'Type 9.' They were decent.
The next band was Glass Intrepid, I've run into them a few times, as I've played shows with them around here, but for some reason they acted as if they didn't know who I was. I guess this was a rockstar night. That's cool, no good words for them, not even a link.
So the show really started once Action Reaction (http://myspace.com/actionreaction) took the stage. They took about 35 minutes to set up (keys, bongos, samples) and then they were ready to go. Their set was pretty solid, and the band played well all the way through. The singer sounded to be having a weak night, but you could definately hear his talent in some parts. He was a great front man, and really got the crowd involved. This was the first band with their own light tech (I believe) and you could tell a difference.
Overall Rating: 60% (if the vocals would've been as tight as the band, it would've been the best band)
The next band that played was Love Arcade (http://myspace.com/lovearcade). I read on their bio that one of the guys recorded the whole album in their basement. I'm not sure if you've heard their album, but it's solid pop. I love the stuff. It's pretty raw but well produced none-the-less. They had pretty good lighting, and they started it off with some kick ass hip hop song, but the best part was definately the singer's energy. He was on point, as well as all of the backup vocalists, and made the show very entertaining. Their hit, "keep it comin'", available for listening on their myspace, (http://myspace.com/lovearcade) was a tad bit fast, but sounded cd quality. These guys definately knew what they were doing.
Overall Rating: 75% the songs sounded a bit to similar, and their set seem to run on forever. I think it was just the lack of crowd involvment, another year of touring and they'll be selling places out if they can also manage to get more of their music heard.
Now, for the moment you've all been waiting for, the rock mother-fucking show. Pitch black stage, two floods come on, and one of those weird ass sampler intros that makes you feel as if you're in the matrix is playing. Four clicks on the hats and BAM... Kill Hannah (http://myspace.com/killhannah) is here. I'll just say these guys can play their shit and the singer is on. He is also really good with the crowd, he shows a lot of passion and appreciation for the crowd, but is more of a laid back front man. As if he is on some xanex or something. I'm not saying I saw him pop Xanex because I don't know the guy, and I don't know if he did. It just seemed like it. Okay? Anyway, here are some key points.
1. They had green laser beams coming out of the neck of their guitars. Pretty bad ass if you ask me.
2. They kept the place fogged up and blacked out. Most of the lighting was done from the back of the stage, this kept them looking like four sillhouettes.
3. They had another light on their guitar, on the side by the input jack, about a 6" flourecent tube. They turned these on, and the laser beams, at exactly the same time, everytime. Made for a great effect.
4. Their stage presence and energy was incredible, For the most part, they were able to stand still (due to good lighting creating movement) but when they got into it, they really got into it.
I have never heard a singer say this next line, but it was pretty cool. "My voice is practically dead now, but that's alright, because I know you guys can sing this one better than I can anyway."
Pretty good way to make an excuse but keep it 'okay' if you ask me.
Overall Rating: 80% The singer could've been a little bit stronger on some parts. The songs sounded to alike to me. And their set, also, seemed to run on forever.
I'm no pro at writing reviews, so if you don't agree with what I wrote, 1. write your own review to out-perform mine or, 2. Kiss my ass. (cliche, whatever)
Also, If you were in a band on this show and I somehow missed you in this review, simply write me a message on here, and I will respond with this. "You should've given me something to remember you by. I don't mean a free cd, I mean a great performance."
I'm planning on going to more shows, more frequently, so I'll be trying to write reviews for every one I attend. The next one will be my own, TAKETHEWORLD (http://myspace.com/killhannah), at Warehouse Live, and the next after that will be the Take Action Tour (http://takeactiontour.com), also at Warehouse Live.
See you then,
-Josh Wilson
