I never played because I didn't agree with the way they socred stats, but this year I want to try it out.

So, who has the best leagues, who are the best fantasy players, and how do all the trades work?

I've only played yahoo so im not really sure. Best players are players like Carl Crawford(speed, power, avg etc) and obv pitchers with good k/bb, whip,k's and shit.

i recommend looking for guys at specialized positions. for example, albert pujols is probably going to put up better numbers than a-rod, but the quality level behind pujols at first base is a lot deeper than the quality level behind a-rod at third.

just a personal thing i like to work out and it's worked pretty well for me.

ha. i like how you changed your post.

closers and catchers are always the biggest pain, IMO. last year i was smart enough to draft papelbon in the last round of every league i was in, but usually it's a crapshoot.

haha, yeah i worded it wrong. I agree..theres no catcher that really comes to mind being the # 1 catchers. Closers theres a bunch of good ones(wagner, rivera, ryan, etc) but they usually go quickly

closers are worthless as they help in exactly one stat.

yeah but in a H2H that still means something. plus i like to use K/9 as a stat in my leagues, so they're nice in that regard as well.

no, it doesnt mean anything in head to head

find starters who qualify as RP

stick them there.

you will win Wins, IP, and K's every week instead of Saves because you will have at least 2 more starts then your opponent..

yeah that;s usually what I do. I think last year I used Liriano because he started the year as RP

yeah but guys like Joe Nathan are valuable because he has a high K/9 and a low WHIP, added to the saves

unless he blows a save and wrecks your shit for the week.

its cool dudes, you have your opinion and i have my 1st place trophy with solomon torres and curt schilling as my "closers" from last year.

Would picking a closer who you know will have a bunch of save opportunities (Nathan and Hoffman) be a smart idea too?

xbrokendownx

i always have at least 2 closers on my squad

mikeford
01/30/07, 02:59 PM
if you can get them low.

i generally spend my last picks on whatever closers are left.

like i said last year i won my league with mike gonzalez (then solomon torres when gonzalez got hurt) as my only closer for the entire season. so its really up to you.

depends, elite closers are usually ranked in the 40's-60's. It's help if they have good k/9 ratio, low era. But you can still always get ones halfway through the season from the free agent pool.

01/30/07, 04:31 PM
seriously no one will ever draft the pirates or the devil rays or the royals closer but they'll get you enough saves to stay afloat so who cares?

bduke13
01/30/07, 04:44 PM
Its all about preference because I have always loved to have about 3 or 4 closers on my team

I play in a dynasty league and a money league, both of which are extremely competitive... I've always believed H2H is ridiculous and horrible... Roto is where it's at. If you're playing Roto, try getting a sick middle reliever or two, like Scot Shields or Rafael Soriano. If you get 3 of these guys, they get you stats similar to Johan Santana - 17-18 Wins, ERA in the 2s, 180+ K, low WHIP. Always been a great strategy.

Also, I wouldn't blow a pick on a guy like Scott Podsednik to save you in steals. Try to get 5-10 steals at every position. There's almost always a guy you can pick that can give you power and a little bit of speed: Derrek Lee, David Wright, Jason Bay, Carlos Lee, etc.

Closers are nice, but definitely do not overpay for the elite ones. I'd also go hitting first, generally more reliable. Closers help with K, Saves, ERA, WHIP, but there are so many that you can get during the year if you watch the waiver wire.

hey guys, i know i haven't been around much lately and i'm not going to be for some time. school is outta control this semester.

buttttt, fantasy baseball starts up on thursday for yahoo. i'm going to create a 10 team league that is head to head and it'll consist of only AP people. If you are interested, post here or by PM to let me know. I'll PM the details, including the draft date (which wont be until early to mid march because a lot can happen between now and then w/ players), to those who in the league.

If a bunch of people are interested, I'm going to be elitist and pick the regulars who make this forum worth coming to (like jetsstolehome, mikeford, youkwalks, weber, bigmike, drew, etc.) as the 10.

the settings will be fairly typical of a standard 5x5 league w/ a couple additions. Stats will be:

Hitting/Fielding
Runs
RBIs
HRs
SBs
BAA.
SLG. (not in standard yahoo leagues)
Fielding Percentage (also not)

Pitching
Wins
Saves
K's
ERA
WHIP

these of course can be debated among the people in the league and can be edited up until Opening Day.

yeah i mean, i said that its open to discussion (fielding percentage that is). i think it would be really cool to have a defensive category involved though. it shakes things up and forces you to consider what different things different position players bring, separate from just how they hit and run.

as for fielding, you can have: fielding percentage, putouts, assists and errors. i'd be willing to have it be errors rather than fielding percentage, if that appeals to the majority of people.

Always look for decent players who play multiple positions in the late rounds. Last year, Xavier Nady played LF/RF/CF/3B/1B/C even though he only played the outfield and first base all year. And he had a good season, so he was useful. Also, fuck Closers. They help out in Saves, that's about it. Look for SP's who are also RP's because then they get K's, Innings, and Wins. You could always pick up a decent Closer after the draft if you want.
