Okay, so I was really hyped for this show seeing as I am a big Tera Melos fan and the clips I had seen of Portugal the Man looked promising. I had The Fall of Troy before with Poison the Well and they sducked due to technical difficulties, but I was more than willing to give them another chance.
The location was Back Booth in Orlando, a place I had never been to before. The directions we got from yahoo were shitty and my girlfriend and I drove around for close to an hour before we found the joint. We finally showed up and were bummed to find out Tera Melos had just finished and Damiera was tuning up to go. The place was packed as Dameira kicked in. I am not overly familiar with their music, but it seemed to be the standard fare of the day. The crowd just seemed to be plodding along, but that might also have been due to the fact they were packed in like sardines.
Up next was Portugal The Man. I had seen the video they have and a few live clips and was interested to see how it turned out. I like the lead guitarists/vocalists falsetto contrast with the other guitarists voice and I like the fact there was a bit more complex ideas going on in their music than some of the other bands out there now. Portugal said they have an EP coming out soon and will be heading back into the studio when they finish this tour. I will be looking for that when it comes out.
Finally it was time for The Fall of Troy. The crowd was hyped and when "I Just got This Symphony Goin" kicked in people started jumping. The musicianship was tighter than when I saw them last year and they have a better stage prescence too. When F.C.P........... started in the place really shook with bodies flying around everywhere. Next was a new song which had some really long title I couldn't remember, but it sounded great and I am exictedly waiting for the new album. After about 2-3 more songs we decided to hit the merch booth and make our way back to Tampa to study for a test we had the next day. The merch booth was a disaster. First, they had to flag someone down to sell us the new Tera Melos vinyl album and a t-shirt which took close to ten minutes. Then, I tried to buy a Fall of Troy shirt and some guy sat there on his sidekick or some shit for 5 minutes before acknowledging me only to tell me "i dont sell this stuff, some other girl does" so I said "Guess they don't get my money then huh?" and he just shrugged his shoulders and we left. Lesson for FOT, if you have a merch table, have someone there at all times who can sell your stuff. You need the money as it is and people are willing to give it to you, perhaps you ought to have somone there to take it.
All in all a so-so show. Back Booth isnt quite made for good shows as evidenced by the huge wood beams obstructing the view from the bar area and the shitter was on the other side of the place, so have fun fighting through the kiddies if you have to go to the bathroom. Other than that Fall Of Troy is getting better with each time I see them and Portugal the Man may get my money for their next album after thei live show.
