well i'm 24, will be 25 when it comes out and i'm very excited. i'm well educated, have a fantastic job, have a great social life, and am equally into sports as much as i am into music. after reading your post, i first thought to myself "wow joe, you must be an anomaly!" but then i considered the amount of people my age and older who enjoy these books, and the author's ability to so meticulously create a fictional world, with a compelling story line, and great plot twists.... it was then i realized you just must be a douchebag.

im so intriqued by this that I had to do some research on this "adults reading childrens books" phenomenon an it is amazing how many researchers, doctors, phychologists, etc. argue that reading Harry Potter is sort of a substitute for gays and lesbians coming out. Essentially, closet homosexuals can relate to Harry:

"
The interplay between the world of magic and the world of Muggles in the Potter books is identical to how queer historians and sociologists describe the interplay between the closeted gay world and the mainstream world, particularly in the days before the gay-liberation movement. Homosexuals were everywhere, yet heterosexuals usually could not see them. Gay bars looked just like straight bars from the outside. Gay people invented elaborate codes, often in language, dress, and deportment, so they could recognize one another but not be seen as abnormal by the heterosexual — Muggle — world. In his book Gay New York, historian George Chauncey writes of the "invisible map" that exists in all cities that enables queers to find fellow travelers and assembling places: people and places usually invisible to the unknowing heterosexual. This is precisely the situation in the Potter books, where Hogwarts, Diagon Alley (where the magic shops are), 12 Grimmauld Place (the meeting place of Order of the Phoenix), Azkaban Fortress, and even magical buses and trains that run out of major terminals exist in the middle of large cosmopolitan cities and yet remain invisible to Muggles who simply cannot see them."

It's unfortunate that we live in a country where homesexuals have to excape in to a book because they are so unaccepted in the "real world". Maybe once we cast George from office we can finally work our way towards acceptance...

If you are suggesting that the million people around the WORLD who read this book are homosexuals afraid to come out of the closet, i feel sorry for your ignorance. Why can you not accept that they are jsut good books with a large audience of all ages?

I am NOT suggesting that, and I apologize if I was not clear on that. Please note that the large paragraph above was a quote, nit my writing. I was saying that I was amazed how many others are suggesting that.

I'm not nearly educated enough on the subject to make that kind of statement.

That being said, I do love to gamble...and I would give any takers 4-1 on their money that if you polled 1,000 men who have read "Harry Potter" and 1,000 men who have read...i dont know...say..."The Audacity of Hope"...a higher percentage of the men who read Harry Potter would be gay.

Before you rip on me...please note that I am not saying I am right. Im just saying that I like my odds. Its like I put $500 large on the Colts this weekend because I THINK they are going to win (by 7) , but Im not saying they ARE going to win.

I digress.

how can we ever work towards acceptance when the 31 year old leaders of our world are spending their thursday afternoons comparing and contrasting the pathetical weak correlation between a fictional book and homosexual tendencies? by stealing a quote from another site, do you feel more affirmed in your conquest over a vast majority of teenage/college students on a music message board? do you think this makes you sound intelligent, or merely desperate to escape the confines of the basement bedroom of your mother's home that you undoubtedly live in. have a good time at the bar tonight, telling all of your obviously highly intellectual friends how well you "owned those ankle biters" on the internet, sitting behind some monitor and a keyboard covered in grease and used tissues from the amount of times you beat off to your downloaded copy of debbie does dallas: the new generation and b-list pornos from some crappy p2p network. tell them how astonished you are that civilized adults could be so enamored by a "fictional piece of literature", then proceed to go to poker night and watch some tarantino movie that is obviously based off real life experiences and is more of a documentary than entertainment.

by the way, im not 31. Who puts their real age on a message board?

AND...you can't "compare and contrast a correlation". A correltation is a single item and therefore you would be comparing and contrasting it to itself, which is not really possible.

Now, you could "examine the correlation..." or perhaps "explore the correlation..." but yeah, you definately could not compare and contrast it.

i'm sorry, my rich parents taught me that it's not polite to pass judgment and make assertions on things that i know nothing about. your follow-up post (which was not posted when i started typing my response) points out that you acknowledge your ignorance. i also learned at my university for wealthy people, that if "acceptance" is truly what you strive for in life, then making gross generalizations about a demographic of people who read fictional literature and stapling them as closet homosexuals is probably not the best way to do that. now please excuse me, i have to go pick up my escalade from the shop (needed some bigger wheels, you know ho it is), buy some starch for my polo collars, book my trip to fiji, and then stop by the local wine bar for some wine sampling and hor'dourves.

As you have already stated, I was simply posting what I thought to be an interesting theory, not making a generalization.

Also, I dont remember EVER saying that you were rich. I might have said your daddy paid your way through college (am I wrong?) but that is alot different than being rich.

I mean, look at your bathroom for gods sake. There is room for one person in there...and you have a plastic shower curtain. If you ever get a real job and can afford to live in a respectable place, let me suggest a jetted tub. I have two of them and they are, as the kids say, "the shit".

Next time you want to attack somebody personally you might want to take down all evidence supporting the fact that you are rather pathetic piece of shit.

it's called a "college apartment". had you gone to college, you might realize that most apartment complexes don't offer your luxurious jetted tubs. you almost might have learned that "alot" is in fact two whole words! actually, you might have learned that in elementary school, but you were undoubtedly more preoccupied with seeing how you could make that jet stream tickle your special place when mommy wasn't watching.

dude. Im so anti-war it is ridicuous. Im about as liberal as they come and would not be unhappy to see Bush tried for war crimes.

If you think the War in Iraq is the only thing France is "on the fence" about, then you are the one in need of further education.

and the fact that you actually think you can win an online battle pretty much reaffirms everything i have said about you to begin with. and damn, i thought i had a good 3 touchdown lead on you. oh poop! guess i should wave my white flag. after meatloaf tonight, you can tell your mommy how you really rustled some feathers on ap.net and you won! you won good! you won real good!

uhhh... buddy? i was obviously pointing out the lack of apostrophe in your original post. also, thank you for being the stereotypical, ignorant american: i know a total of 10 words in french. tops.

Do you guys use capital letters up there in the great white north?

See how stupid it is to be spelling/grammar police on message boards? Its so pointless.

I'm in college myself. And maybe if you were at work right now instead of typing on some message board you could make enough to afford a nice apartment while going to college like I do.

Keep picking apart my spelling and grammar...it just shows you cant win the argument on merit. And im certainly not going to waste my time stopping to spell check.

Seeing as how I have officially "bitch slapped" you in 3 consecutive posts with your best comeback being "you dont spell good!" im gonna move on.

Enjoy the new Harry Potter book and the High School Musical DVD you keep renting.

oh no! you bitch slapped me! ohhh it tickles! and considering i'm going to finish up 2 master's degrees by the time i reach 27, i really have to question what the hell you were doing with the first 31 years of your life. oh that's right, you're on the right track. you job search on monster. haha, tell me how that works out for you. you're set for life buddy. okay, but now seriously, you obviously are getting off on bitch slapping me, so alas, i will concede defeat, as i need to shower and meet up with my coworkers to sing the blues of how i was owned on a message board.

consider this my white flag.... :efu:

have a good one, dick.

Apparently i think its harry (and JK rowling)'s birthday on the book release date.. but 7.7.7 would of been cool.

haha...my birthday too.

i personally am undecided if it's sad that I'm turning 22 on that day and am still excited about the book coming out.

whatever, fuck it...they're fun books.

A lot of people are born in July...why is that I wonder?

I wonder if there are statistics out on what month the most people are born in.

I'm on it...

And an answer...

"August has the number one ranking in average number of births. About 21 million Americans, or nine percent of the population, have birthdays in August. July and September follow closely behind, with 8.8 percent of birthdays, and February is last, with 7 percent."

it did not. but Im doing some more looking around. Maybe because it is starting to get cold in most of the country, so people are inside more? hell, I dont know.

Let me know if you find out.

And thanks on the e-dick contest. I enjoy a good debate...it gets the blood pumping. haha

february is probablly the last because is 2-3 days shorter (1-2 in leap years) than all the others

interestingly, august is also the month that the LEAST people die.

According to one source:

"Demographers and sociologists long have puzzled over the mysteries of America's birth seasons: Why do births peak in the fall almost every year, and then dip in January and again in April? Why do other parts of the world have their own repetitive patterns, in some cases practically the opposite of America's? And why do birth seasons occasionally change over time?
"There is no consensus that I'm aware of as far as a factor, or the factors, that contribute to this," said Brady Hamilton, a statistician and demographer for the reproductive statistics branch of the National Center for Health Statistics. "It seems to be a myriad of different hypotheses."

as for the deaths:

"Officials are far more settled on why deaths tend to dip at this time of year and surge again in the winter months. On a day-by-day basis, August has the fewest deaths, while January has the most. (Click above for a table of month-by-month deaths.)
"This is consistent with what we know about the effects of winter and the flu season on those that are sick and frail," said Robert N. Anderson, chief of the NCHS's mortality statistics branch."

I am really excited for this.

Also, for anyone who can't seem to get over how strange it is that people college age and up are ready to wet themselves about this, you might want to consider the fact that the first HP came out in 1998. I was only 13 then so I really don't find any shame in the fact that I'm jumping up and down excited for this at 21. Although, having read them, I wouldn't be ashamed to admit how much I like them no matter how old I was.

I liked these books...when I was eleven.
I think the movies put me off.
The Harry Potter kid, however, suddenly got hot so maybe I'll start watching them again.
Funny you should mention being in the closet and liking Harry Potter.
Because I always though there was something wiffy about Draco Malfoy. He set my gaydar off bigtime. Coincidence?

this would probably be interesting news if there was anyone in 5th grade or lower that read this site.

I'm going to pull the teacher card here and inform you that the books in the Harry Potter series range from an upper fifth grade level to a ninth grade level on the Lexile scale. They aren't "easy" books for young children to read and comprehend. Also, how many 800+ page books did you read when you were in elementary school?

I really don't see why adults reading children's books is such a strange concept for some. Children's Lit was one of my favorite courses in college. I have a huge collection of children's books (from picture books to novels). I am (still) a big fan of Scholastic book orders.

Most people who claim to dislike these books have probably never actually taken the time to sit down and read any of them.

Seriously soooooo motherfuckingfhaeglghl excited, but equally sad at the same time. I wish JKR could have kept going...but alas, all students must graduate Hogwarts at 17 :[
July is going to be a FANTASTIC month: Deathly Hallows release, Order of the Phoenix release in theaters, Simpsons movie release, All Star Game @ AT&T Park (at least for me since I'm a Giants fan/SF resident).

I'm guessing the reason they aren't releasing it on 7.7.07 is because its the second anniversary of the London Underground (subway) bombings.

You know, just to go completely off subject and all.

Are you really trying to think logically in regards to a book in which people have invisible cloaks and run around with magic wands?

Dude you are a dick. If you are gonna come on a Harry Potter post and talk smack to everyone that enjoys it, you should probably expect to get an absolute ass-raping. Seriously get over the fact the books are good and well-written and go pity yourself for having absolutely no imagination or the fact that you will never get a girlfriend.
