View Full Version : Internet Censorship in High School

So I decided to use the school's computers today because I hgave the first two periods of the day free and I figured since I haven't been to AP in a while, that'd I use this time to start posting again. Only to find that that my school has an internet censorship program on the library's computers. I understand the censorship need for explicit images and such, but text? I think I, as well as every other student, can handle dirty words. Almost every page on AP.net, including the front page, has been blocked from loading because it contains "a large amount of unacceptable or questionable words. I've only been able to load about half of a thread before I get the message at the bottom of the page.
Every thread I've been to has been stopped from loading, and I can't stand it. So tell me, what's your stance on the censorship of speech on the internet by public schools?

Chances are they don't necessarily want to block the content, but they don't want you posting on message boards on school computers which should only be used for work. Same reason sites like Myspace are blocked.
Very rarely will a site with excess profanity be educationally beneficial.

i bet this kid won't be able to see your post at school 'cause the word "shit" is in your username.

Let the computer admins feel like they're important. It makes them feel special inside. Meanwhile, use a proxy.
Without the sarcasm though, generally speaking, I tend to agree with your overall views, 'studyingwalls.' I can understand the blocking of explicit images and things, but text in general is ridiculous. Sometimes, people take things too far.

Re: " I understand the censorship need for explicit images and such, but text?"
You have been brainwashed my friend. That is soooooooooo wrong!! What is wrong with a human body? A bunch of puritan F#@!heads decided that they are ashamed of their own sexuality and have been promoting the idea that this is wrong. These are the same people that also show us images of dead humans from Iraq in the news. Porn and other disturbing images exist. It's part of life and people have to learn to deal with it whether they like it or not. The alternative, keep people in a closet then expose them to it at 20+ years of age sucks a@@. I've despise the porn industry that makes it but I despise censorship more.
Someone has convinced you there is a legitimate need for censorship and that is very scary. WHat is needed is an education system that tells people about stuff so they can make educated decisions for themselves.
You're living in a box. So what are YOU gonna do about.

Exactly. People don't understand that the "censorship" is to keep people on task, not to save them from the terrors of the world.

God forbid we have some free time at school. That would be terrible.
But yes, I agree that 'censorship' is the wrong word.

Just because things exist doesn't mean that kids should see them at school
Your Anti-Flag song of an argument is overkill in my opinion

VTunnel is blocked at most schools with any kind of online security program. Good try though.
And I think the topic of the conversation wasn't exactly about ways to get around it, but the topic of internet 'censorship' period.
But yes, using a proxy, such as VTunnel, can lead you around the blocked sites.

Wow, I didn't expect to blow up so much.
I understand the people telling me it's for work, and I admit, I overlooked that completely, but when sites with games, e-mail, and messenger programs AREN'T blocked, I don't think that a message board is doing much worse.
And actually, the site itself isn't blocked, as I said before, it is actually just the text. I have access to the site, thus why I could start this thread. If the site's content were blocked to keep me on task, it would've blocked me entirely, not just sections of text, and just about every other website excluding Google and anything education-related.

It's understandable for a school to censor words. I wouldn't consider cursing part of "freedom of speech"
That is weird that it stops running the site after though, however the school is protecting themselves from law suits from citizens, this is why institutions have to do shit like that.

It makes computer class suck ass.
It's not just the explict stuff that's blocked at my school. For instance, when I had to write my senior research paper, I was gathering research on my topic, and most of the basic information sites were blocked because of 'school cheating information.' It's research!

This happens in the Chinese Google too. Certain words are blocked. I'm not an expert in thsi but it seems to be common that building walls and censorship have the opposite effect as their intentions. Build a wall and you invite someone to cross/destroy/attack it. Nothing brings attention to an item as much as trying to censor it. Ask M. Manson, Pink Floyd, Sex Pistols et al. Everything that got censored went double plat.
