View Full Version : Misogyny in rock music.

Why is there so much misogyny in rock music?
It seems like men out number the women 100-1.
The days of groupie fucking, macho rednecks may be over (just) but can someone please explain to me how exactly a room full of teenage girls screaming at the top of their lungs about how “hot” Pete Wentz/Gerard Way/Brendon Urie is is in anyway better?
I know, I know. It’s mainstream music, it’s always been that way. But it seems to me like the so-called equality in our current music scene is little more than misogyny dressed up as teenage rebellion.
For more information, see TRL, Avenged Sevenfold videos, the tit flashing incident at Download and the numerous web chats devoted to how “hot” whichever member of Panic! At The Disco is.
This isn’t because it’s something that NEEDS to be there, it’s because we put up with it.
And don’t bother to reply if you’re going to call me a man hating, hairy, ugly lesbian.

first of all, you may be the most rational and intelligent 14 year old member on this board.
as far as the women in music, i think it is stronger then its been in along time. artists/bands like Paramore, Shiny Toy Guns, Regina Spektor, Lilly Allen, The Sounds, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Morningwood.. its a pretty solid group of succesful, female fronted acts.
I agree with you, about the fanatical teenage girl thing bieng on the same lines as the slutty motley crue groupies.. but i honestly think it will always be that way. it seems "normal everyday" people, think to highly of "famous people" and will do almost anything, to get the attention of one of thier idols. which really is silly because, they are no different then you or myself..give or take a few million dollars..haha
as far as the Ax7 video, i think they are trying to bring back the days of Motley Crue and Guns and Roses ( the whole sex, drugs and rock n roll lifestyle) but failing at it horribly.
i am not sure what you are refering to as the tit flashing incident on the download ....so i cant really say much on that topic
and i have seen way to many "he's soo hawt" threads in my short time as a member of these boards... so i know exactly where you are coming from on that one.

Also- are you saying that only music is mysogonic (I think that's a word) since all forms of entertainment are- not that that's okay.

I think that's just a reflection of our society in general. Mainstream music will reflect mainstream ideas.

girls who do things such as flashing bandmembers or obsessing over them or whatever only hurt there own case when it comes to this issue. i think its less the bands fault and more the fans fault.

i really think you shouldn't have left out the fact that when someone talks about a band like paramore, the first thing people say is how cute/hot their singer is. Yeah, that also happens with bands of males, but how often have you ever seen a girl band get coverage/hyped out when their singer wasn't "pretty" or whatever?
i also don't think women at concerts screaming about how hot they think a random member of the band is counts as inherently mysoginistic. if anything, it's the opposite, as guys yell at random women they think are hot on the street all the time, but when women do the same thing, they get considered whores.

the gossip are getting a lot of indie hype, but I think as far as bands in this genre paramore and the hush sound will get more press (not that they're not good, but if they didn't look like they did they might not be as popular)

I'm sorry, do you actually know what the word "misogyny" means? Not one word in your post refers to anything even close to this

I am aware that misogyny means hatred of women but I couldn’t think of another word to describe the male enforced gender laws that saturate rock music. It to me is bordering on hatred.

Have you thought about the fact that maybe these girls are reacting to heavilly enforced ideals that are pushed on any female wanting to get involved in the scene? I think if more bands, like Pearl Jam, spoke about it then under informed girls would break free of it.
Yes, the girls are idiots, but that doesn't explain why they are more so than the guys. Maybe if they were told that they didn't have to view their favourite rock star as "sexy" then they wouldn't. To me it seems like band wagon jumping with the young girls.

Fuck bitches.
Yeah. One of the many reasons I am glad I don't listen to "mainstream" music often. I like actually seeing great female fronted bands. Fabulous Disaster anyone? I Like Japanese Hardcore? Abe Froman? A//Political? Crass? Dirt? F-Minus?

The misogyny found in music is generated from a culture in which women are viewed as unequal and simply tools through which one may receive a child or pleasure.

I'm not sure I get what your saying. Are you saying it's our fault that women like famous men?

You may not realize this, but sometimes, girls think boys are attractive, and boys think girls are attractive as well. Why aren't you complaining about all the dudes who comment on the looks and bodies of Gwen Stefani or Kelly Clarkston or the singer from Paramore and how they'd "hit it" and "tear it up"?
The argument should be about who we choose to idolize and how far we take it, and while that can definitely be considered a problem in a lot of cases, it is not gender specific. I've seen breasts flashed, I've seen dongs whipped, it's all the same.
