View Full Version : what bands should my school book?

i'm part of the group that books bands at my school, lehigh university in bethlehem, pa. we're looking into bringing some "smaller" bands for our annual outdoor festival. in the past we've had acts such as talib kweli, cake, less than jake. this year we're looking into bringing some bands that are not so expensive and that span various genres. we were especially looking into the format, but they're already booked. i think we're kind of looking for indie-pop/indie/folky type acts. we already have a smaller hip-hop group booked. it's an outdoor festival so we're looking for a fun, upbeat act.
basically i'm asking for some suggestions as to who we can bring in. we were looking to spend approximately 15,000 a piece for two bands or 20-25K on one band. just to put things in perspective, talib got 25K last year (i think) and the format was asking for 15-20K i believe. with that in mind, any ideas?

Fuck that. Don't book a band that's requesting that much money. You could book 15,000 bands for that much.

not true
but you might be better of booking like 5-8 bands, it is an all day festival I'm assuming.

There are plenty of bands that came to my school to play for free.

Seeing where you're from, you could probably get Houston Calls (pop-punk) for about 3-4K, then Gym Class Heroes as well.

I would have to agree...15grand is quite allot for 1 band...
Theres bands out there that would pay you to play on a stage in front of people, just to spread there music out to others.

Yeah but its a festival, not a coffee house. Im sure he could book a bunch of drunken frat guys with acoustic guitars if he wanted to, more than likely hes not getting anyone for less than a couple grand.

I actually got to see that show happen. Purdue University in Indiana held an outdoor show last March.

Seriously, I can probably find like 1 "big" band and then 3-4 smaller bands for the 25K.

OK Pending that they're still the price that they were:
Gym Class Heroes: 10K
Audition: 4K
Houston Calls: 3K (since they live on the east coast)
New Atlantic: 1-1.5K (same reason, and they're smaller)
June would go for 4K as well
Self Against City- 3-4K
The Graduate: 1.5-2K
SoTheySay- 4K
etc etc...Look I just booked you a whole 1 day festivus!

ahh thanks guys.
actually we already sent a bid for gym class heroes. the 20K (i think) they're asking for is a far cry from the 10K they wanted... they actually declined in favor of another school in ohio.

i was just thinking about houston calls today actually... they would be fun.
personally, i'd love to do the same thing you guys mentioned - bring in 7-8 bands that together add up to one overpriced band. we're only looking for 3-4 bands though. and we already have one spot secured. we also have to consider the fact we have to at least attempt to cater to the entire student body. it should be mentioned that this is a rather (see: very) preppy school. the kids would cream over dmb, jack johnson, guster, etc. luckily our committee has a more diverse (see: better) taste in music and we are deliberately trying to indie this festival out (even if only to spite the overly-fratty population).
wow did i just say "indie this festival out"?
note: we already took some heat for trying to get the format. apparently no one has heard of them... keep that in mind.

Hmmm. For a "larger" band then try: Bayside, Anberlin, Bowling for Soup (I saw them at a college outdoor show, surprisingly, people loved it), Days Away, Early November, Forgive Durden, I am the Avalanche, Nightmare of You..Those should be in the 15K price range then

100k on top of the 125K they already ask for, or 100k on top of like, 25k? Because them asking 225k makes me my brain hurt.

100k on top of the 125k they normally ask for.
It made my brain hurt too.

my school, ohio u, is having the dear hunter and as tall as lions in march.
and really it depends what you're looking for. i know bands such as crash romeo, spill canvas, lucky boys confusion, boys night out, dropping daylight, or probably even punchline would do it for fairly cheap.
