View Full Version : I would like to discuss the status/quality of the Sports Forum

This is not a reactionary thread to the "Fan of 2 teams in the same sport" thread. I seriously would like to discuss the status/quality of the Sports Forum as it's diminished over the past few months, in my opinion.
There, to me, seems to be a lack of quality posting and way too much bickering (especially tonight/last night. jesus) and I just want others opinions on what would get this forum back to being as good as it was in the spring/summer.

it seems as though the discussion threads are very well moderated on their own and there are but few horrifically ignorant people that enter every once in a while. it's the other threads that get ugly most of the time...
looksthatkillbn
02/06/07, 08:33 PM
also, why do we always have to react to all of the ignorant people that come in here? you know who's intelligent. you know who generally presents a standard argument. ignore everyone else.
otherwise, do what tate did and we make it a password protected forum

Honestly, I still think we should create our own forum. I just think it would be a lot better if we could moderate it ourselves.
If we all decide on doing it, I hope we can get the ball rolling on it soon, because I think it could be pretty badass.

i really don't know what happened, to be honest. i feel that this forum is an entirely different entity than the rest of this website. with the boston kids banned, and leftwide 'leaving' the site, i don't know what can be done. we run into these little ruts every now and then, and then things get better. i believe it's just a cycle or something.

this is what happens during "The Lull."
The Lull n. The length of time, usually around a month, between the end of the NFL season and the beginning of the NCAA Tournament and MLB's Spring Training.
During The Lull I like to catch up on my reading.

yes. i was just about to post something like this and i'll say what i was going to:
i think we can all agree that this is hands down the absolute best forum on this site. however, as of late, it seems to have turned into the general forum with sports discussion. whether it be from members bitching at each other or staff, or staff being trigger happy with bans, this forum has deteriorated over the winter. it wasn't like this in the spring and summer during baseball season, and it wasn't like this for most of the fall. everyone needs to chill the fuck out and just get back to what we do best--talk sports. i find it funny that on a "punk" website, i've found the best sports discussions i've ever had. you guys all know more about sports than any one of my friends or family does and it makes for excellent sports talk. i'm grateful that i've found this forum and i'm proud, in a way, that we're usually devoid of all the bullshit that plauges the general forum. it's sad to see that the form has deteriorated as of late and i'd love to see it back at it's height by spring training (9 days away. :excited). i'm confident we can do that again through our common love of sports. please, let's try to do that.
definitely. and we should all try to maintain a mutual respect for each other in our disagreements.
we USED to be able to just be guys and talk about sports, arguing, yelling at each other, and having fun about it. then, some people started to sniffle about their feelings (if this pisses anybody off - deal with it) and it went downhill. I like every single person in these forums. Everybody. I am not a jackass, I am not a mean dude. I just like to flip shit with people to pass the time - as I figured everyone else did. But then all this e-drama started and it's totally lame. I don't know why people can't just "leave it all on the field" sometimes.
just read.

i don't understand how or why this happened. i can agree wholeheartedly that our arguments and discussions were becoming a bit repetitious, so perhaps that's a reason. i'm not sure. i just want this place to be fun. i'm all for making it work. i love this forum. maybe we can think of it as a re-birth of sorts. like it was said, we know who knows they're shit, and who are good for debates and discussions. ignore the pointless shit, and let's talk sports.

mikeford called jason a cum-guzzler or something, theclearstuff and doug were also banned for attacking him is what I've gathered. But I don't want this thread to turn into anything about that. However, it's hard to discuss that when mikeford was a solid poster in MLB, NFL, NHL and NBA, however instigative he was. Also. LeftWideOpen's apparently 'leaving' or something.

I know I get bitched on for the stupid shit I say sometimes. Whatever. Honestly though like Matt said this place is a Mecca for sports talk. I have never had people tell me so many things about sports or know more random shit than me. I have people tell me that Im like a sports encyclopedia and then I look up to a lot of you and feel subordinate, in a good way. I know I take things seriously sometimes but I try to just roll with the punches, laugh shit off, and talk sports because thats what this place is. I dont care if people rip on me and call me an idiot or whatever. It doesnt mean anything personally to me.
I encourage everyone to just talk sports and be mature..hopefully we can get back to the way it was last summer when I wouldnt get jumped on for staying stupid shit or having a far off opinion. I stopped coming here as of late because I would get jumped on but decided Id come back when baseball season came and that a break(well not posting all that much as I used to) was necessary.
In any case, now that I think Ive repeated myself 5 times, please just talk sports and forget about other shit. Throw the random stats out there and forget the sand in the vagina if someone calls you an idiot..Its most likely out of love.

seriously! everybody attacks me and livethesounds when we say anything about the titans.
This forum is the only reason I became a regular poster on this site. This place was unrivaled during the NCAA tourney and world cup. Its been in the shitter lately, but I blame myself and others whom have engaged in pointless banter with moderators and staff. I hope lwo does not leave, and that mikeford and theclearstuff come back eventually because they were part of the heart and soul of this place. What I said in the other thread, and I'll repeat here -- if you want more quality posters - invite your friends to come post here. New users don't grow on trees.
The issue is the majority of you don't let a new user become a veteran, so the quality of conversation will only get worse. People need to get their feet wet, go with the learning curve, etc. Otherwise you're just sitting here playing with yourselves.

I really wouldn't expect this to last with Webber.
Also, the most surprising thing out of the Pacers this year is Jamaal Tinsley's health. They've really started to pull together some wins since they trade, and if they make the progress I think they will for the rest of the season, I seriously think a Pacers-Pistons match up would make a great series.

I'm not denying it would be a great series, i just think that Lebron could single-handedly beat the Pacers. I mean, he almost did that to the Pistons, a far superior defensive squad than they are now, or anyone in the East is. I really think Cleveland is scary come playoff time.

Yeah, Lebron is definitely a guy who could step up in that series and beat the Pacers, but I still think it would come down to the wire. The Pacers really don't have anybody they can throw at him, so pretty good point.

yeah for sure. The only thing that offers me any comfort is the defensive game we played against them over the weekend and when worse comes to worse, we can put Tayshaun on him and his length bothers Lebron, until he posts him up.

Not to mention taking 4 Pistons defenders to stop him in the final two games of that playoff series coupled with his teammates failing him. And you wonder why the sports forum sucks? Dude. This is why. You're ridiculous. He made a choice, one that may be completely fool-headed -- but who the hell cares!? You think his opinion is ridiculous, good. That's great. Saying, "I disagree, and here's why .... list reasons" is all that's needed. The reactions it got the first time (and now the second time) are not.
The point is -- he's not wrong. He's wrong in your mind, and others minds, but it's a moot point. He simply feels differently than you do. However, your reaction to become the "super-master-statistics-everything-is-black-or-white" poster simply degrades the forums. Now he doesn't go back, now you have one less poster. The forums are not for 6 jack-offs that memorized their baseball card collections to sit around and make other people feel bad. They're for people to talk about sports -- talk about games -- and express opinions -- YES, even wrong ones. Why? Because it fuels discussion and when handled correctly people are able to learn. However, when they're cussed at after posting once or twice, you'll sit there playing with yourselves for the next 4 months -- and that's not what these forums are created for. If you wanna drop me a few grand to cover the expenses, I'll make you and your buddies your own private forum to go talk about sports by yourselves.
I can't respond since I've been in here discussing the basketball that this thread turned into and that thread was locked, but how is my post where i gave him facts and what not about why I think his statement was wrong is what is bad about the sports forum? I was nice, I laid out my side of the argument? Is calling his argument/statement 'ridiculous' really that bad? I'm seriously just wondering since I can't respond in that thread because I didn't get back there in time.

This is the last post Ill post on the drama shit
Essentially this is how I see things:
Jason sees some of the sports forum members as a nuisance to his site. While we all get along, when Jason comes in he feels that anything said towards him is an attack (which it is) and instead of brushing it off he flexes his authority. This is fine. However, this does hurt the sports forum because the people that were banned were good posters, even if they were pricks about it. Unfortunately, Jason felt this was necessary and didnt see them in any type of positive light and felt the need to ban them.
Its a damn shame but whatever.

We all have a mutual respect for each other. We all call each other names in a sarcastic joking manner, but some people take words that they read on an internet message board far too seriously. It is sports and people come from different regions of the country and everyone is stubborn over their opinion. I understand why Mikeford was banned, but you have also banned people from threads on a whim. You say you consistently read these forums, but that is not true. Considering your fantasy league post when there have been multiple threads throughout the year discussing fantasy leagues. The sports forum has always been moderated fine and the staff has involved itself in mostly all discussions. You came in here recently and you got upset over people talking about JJ Redick and Duke. You used your power to close threads/ban people because of it. i rarely ever see you post anything else in here, besides the NCAA thread, which you kicked me out of because you don't like me.
You say you want us to bring our friends here? If you're going to act like this, why would we want to bring them here?
I understand your moderation, but you make everything personal and as soon as the person says something about you, you ban them, even if you say things about them prior. Not everyone has the same opinion as you. Thats the beauty of the world. Discussion of different opinions to form a logical solution or so forth.
Just chill out for a little. You take everything far too seriously. Worst has been said about people, which have gone noticed, but let through because we know it is sarcastic or a joke.

He states his opinion on the matter and then you try to counter-argue and he says that it's his opinion therefore it cannot be argued (the beauty of opinions).
