View Full Version : New York may ban iPods while crossing the street

New Yorkers who heedlessly cross city streets while listening to their Apple iPod or fumbling with other electronics devices, such as cell phones, may soon face a hefty fine from the city.

"I'm not trying to intrude on that," Kruger said. "But what's happening is when they're tuning into their iPod or Blackberry or cell phone or video game, they're walking into speeding buses and moving automobiles. It's becoming a nationwide problem."

Talk about paternalistic. This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

I'm sorry, but if you're stupid enough to just mindlessly cross the street you deserve to be hit by a bus.

exactly. It's natural selection. Not to mention, if the cops aren't going to stop for J-Walking they aren't going to stop someone for walking with an iPod on.

i walked the streets of ny everyday and I've never seen someone hit.

On the other hand, my fucking ipod broke.

Yeah, but then they sue whoever hit them and make $$$ for their stupidity. This is a good law.

If you're walking against a light, you can't sue them. It has to be the drivers fault for you to sue them (and win). In my opinion, this law is just as stupid as the one they put forward to ban the use of cell phones in cars. There have been carphones since the 80s and no one thought it was a problem back then.

there have been car phones but only a small selection of people had them. cell phones everyone has and most people i know love to drive and talk.

i know i got pulled over once for being on my phone and not paying attention to how fast i was going. its a smart law.

Oh yes, let's talk this stupid cell phone law.

it doesn't actually apply to me. In my City over the past few weeks they've been putting up big flashing signs that say shit like "Stop for Amber Lights - Get Back To Basics" or "Get off the phone and pay attention".

I only walk the streets two days a week and I've never seen anyone that stupid. Most people excel at determining when to cross.

I have a hard time believing that's true.

Smash Adams

That's because it isn't true.

You can easily stop talking on a cellphone and put your attention back on the road. You can't turn off being drunk.
I think you have to facture in the stigma though- it's dumb to talk on your cell phone and drive, if you drink and drive I'm sure everyone know it's deadly. I think that's the point- could be overanalyzing though

Well, the scholarly articles are here (http://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=cell+phones+drunk+driving &hl=en&lr=&btnG=Search). However, it's much more entertaining to just watch the mythbusters episode:

worst case scenario (as in, obstacle course), you're probably right.. But, for example, driving from my school to my apartment? I highly doubt it.

I do not have any problem driving with my cellphone. I actually tend to be more alert just so I don't catch myself being stupid. It's the idiots who can't keep their attention on the road that have a problem. Use an bluetooth earpiece or one of those corded pieces if you have a problem.

and what a coincidence, that on a day-to-day basis, people aren't driving miles and miles from home?

It makes perfect sense why that should be the case. If I were to get in an accident, I would be in this range:
2 to 5 miles: 29 percent

Because that's the amount I usually drive to go anywhere.

Just wanted to say Happy Birthday! I noticed because it's mine too! Except I'm old. :-(

As for the banning of iPods while crossing the street, it may be a good idea. Though I've been known to listen to my iPod and play around with my BlackBerry when walking around the city. You just have to know the roads and pay attention pretty much.

in NJ it is a 250$ fine if you're caught on your cell phone without the use of a headset while driving.

It is enforced, I know multiple people who have been ticketed. And if it an accident is caused because of it they will face a fine.

With regards to hazards of talking on the phone and drunk driving...Sure it is more hazardous considering you are only using one hand, however, you can hang up the phone on the dime, you cannot stop being drunk.

It's $150 in New York.

Same.

Yes but by the time you realize you need to hang it up, it will be too late.

some people can handle talking on the phone while driving, others can't. i have noticed though that most of the time when i'm almost hit by a car while crossing the street when i have the right of way, the driver is on their cellphone (and usually trying to make a right turn too).

sometimes when i'm crossing the street and trying to change the song on my ipod or send a text i don't pay attention and almost walked into people and stuff. but just listening to it i'm fine.

and it's my birthday too! here's to the quarter century club!

Yeah you're right. I find going through my iPod while driving is really distracting as well. It's a fine line really, but I can see a law prohibiting that sooner then later.

Haha yeah I do that all the time. Texting and driving is another thing that's almost impossible, and very dangerous.

Awe Happy Birthday! We're old! :-)

Thanks for that Mythbusters video, Jason. I'm not going to sit here and condone my drunk driving when I do it, but I really do pay more attention when I drive after a few brews than when I'm on the phone.
