I went with Bob Dylan. I'm surprised I was the first to vote for him. It's still early though.

i really find it ridiculous to see kensrue, rice, ritter and smith carrying this poll. its actually sad and discouraging. i am a true fan of all of these artists, im the one who put them in the poll, but more people have to listen to the legends here. i promise you, get your hands on the music of any artist in there and you will not be disappointed if you like the newer stuff on here

such a hard poll... as far as pure talent and influence.. i'd say neil young... bob dylan... and johnny cash are all amazing
but my fav. on that list are
johnny cash.. elvis costello..and dustin kensrue ( jeff buckley too)...
but overall the strongest solo artist as far as... songwriting..influence..and just all around good music.. i chose Tom Petty
where's John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison?
They ALL held their own alone as songwriters, wtf? haha
I kept my james taylor vote

Bob Dylan, but I like almost everyone on the list with the exception of a few who I haven't listened to
definitely had a tough time choosing between elliott smith and bob dylan.

It's rediculous to me to see Dustin Kensrue and others above people like Sam Cooke, Neil Young, Paul Simon, Al Greene...I'm not denying they have talent, but come'on.

first of all, where's John Lennon but considering i have a horse w/ the registered name "Man in Black" and everyone just calls him Cash, we all know which way my vote ended up going...

you really think so? all of these artists are world renowned other than the newer ones at the bottom
This poll was so hard for me. Dylan, Taylor and Cash hit the spot for me, it was hard between them. I went with Dylan overall though because he's the ugliest.

That's a hell of a list.
Hard to pick because a lot of the stuff is so different.
Basically my first choice is Elliott Smith, Van Morrison, and Bob Dylan.
After that Neil Young, Cat Stevens, Muddy Waters, Rocky Votolato, and Damien Rice. That's my second choice.
I have a hard time ranking bands.

Not that I'm a fan of either but its absolutly ridiculous that Dustin Kensrue got more votes than James Taylor, Paul Simon and Neil Young... I guess people don't understand..

This is a really tough choice but I went with Neil Young. I dunno Bob Dylan is right up there.
Making an argument for more current artists, could Ben Folds, Ace Enders, David Terry, Adam Green, Butch Walker, Conor Oberst or Mike Kinsella be on here for their solo projects.
Songs For Silverman, one of the greatest CDs ever in my opinion. I Can Make A Mess was brilliant in my opinion and though Ace had some help it could easily be considerd a solo artist work, Bright Eyes is really just Conor, Aqueduct is really just David Terry and Owen was a great CD. Adam Green has had a couple good CDs but his lyrics are so nuts I dont think too many take him serious. Butch Walker is a sometimes cheesy but good songwriter, has a good voice too.
I think if youre going to put Damien Rice and Dustin Kensrue on that list of legends, atleast one of those guys could be on the list.
Btw I voted for Al Green, because my dirty pleasure is 70s and early 80s funk and R&B.

I also can't believe that Dustin Kensrue and some of those newer artists are the top vote-getters. I like Dustin, I really enjoy his cd, but to say that he's better then those other names is ridiculous. I would also say Ben Folds should defintely be on there, though.

It's deff Bob Dylan for me, his lyrics are just amazing and he's a legend. It was a tough choice cuz there are other amazing legends on the list.

I went with elvis costello, even though neil young, bob dylan. lou reed, and tom petty are clearly up their. I just thought that elvis was the most underrated.
Also, I would personally add stevie wonder and david bowie.

It's hard to compare classics and current music. Clearly the classic artists paved the way for most of the good music I listen to today, and they are still amazing. But I went with Rocky Votolato, he's underrated, writes beautiful music, and was pretty much the coolest guy ever when I met him (see profile pic).
