Boys Like Girls (http://www.absolutepunk.net/boyslikegirls) passed the 50K sales mark last week. Things seem to be looking up for this band.

I am sure their marketing with Best Buy is helping.

It's front and center every time I walk into one the past couple weeks.

i dont really see the hype with this band. i listened to the cd a bunch of times trying to get into it but i really couldnt. one of their songs sounds like the Five For Fighting song and another sounds like the slow jimmy eat world song(pretty darn close to it).

ps. that lead singer has creepy eyes. lol

I would've never guessed they'd reach 50,000 yet. With the full stint on Warped, they might just reach 100k!

Yes, everything was handed to them. It took them a year and a half to get a record deal and they wrote one of the catchiest albums ever (even if the lyrics are pretty generic), but you're right, it was handed to them. It didn't take any talent or work to get there.

Whenever I have seen them live, it's been a good show. And they've been really good to the fans as well as far as talking to them after the show, taking pictures, etc. They've worked really hard too so good job to them!

when I first heard Boys Like Girls (those first like, 3 songs that came out) I was blown away. I thought it was incredible, and thought huge things for this band...

But in all honesty, I thought that their full length was mediocre at best. The full length album lost the initial magic that was show by this band.

Just my opinion. I hear they are nice guys, so i hope the best for them.

I totally agree. If The Great Escape can carry them all the way until summer and then they release Thunder in August, it would be huge for them. Best of luck to these guys.

The album doesn't grab me the way their live stuff did; nonetheless, I own the album. There's worse stuff out there. It'll be interesting to see if this promisingly auspicious boost for them goes anywhere.

hey,

this band kind of "came out of nowhere" but that doesn't diminish what they've accomplished as a band. that is to say, they've written catchy music that tons of people around the country love. but let's just get this out of the way:

they were only a band for a few months (about 3 or 4) before they got signed to red ink/columbia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boys_Like_Girls). They've toured their asses off in the past year though, so they've earned everything they got. I'd call it a situation where they were in the right place at the right time playing exactly the right kind of music.

Honestly, even though I'm from boston i didn't hear about them until they got signed, but i respect them all the same. any band coming out of this scene here and having any sort of success deserves it and i wish them all the best.

let me add: people seem to be entirely inconsistent with what they fault bands for:

if they become successful quickly they "didn't earn it"
if they toil in obscurity for years and then suddenly get big they "turned their backs on the true fans"
the sad thing is, most of this type of criticism is based off of jealousy alone (that is, criticism based on "how hard a band works" vs. actually constructively critiquing the music [which in and of itself is going to be a judgement call too.])

the fact of the matter is, some bands "make it" and some don't. there really is no rhyme or reason to it. like i said, often times it just comes down to being in the right place at the right time.

i'm not a huge fan of thier music, but they definitely deserve it. i toured with these dude and they're great. this band is going to be massive.

I know Martin the singer personally and I also know Matt Squire, their producer. They definitely don't have song writers. When Martin was in the studio, Squire told me that he had this insane way of writing songs. He'd sit for hours and hours just writing and had this systematic way of doing it no one could really figure out. Martin is an extremely smart and talented person, and I don't think this was handed to them. They most definitely have talent, and thats a major part in whats getting them so far.

lol read the credits to the cd. almost all the songs were written by other song writters. its not something that cant really be debated hah.

"The Great Escape" (Martin Johnson (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Martin_Johnson_%28m usician%29&action=edit), Sam Hollander (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sam_Hollander&action=edit), Dave Katz (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dave_Katz&action=edit)) – 3:28
"Five Minutes to Midnight" (Johnson, Hollander, Katz) – 3:47
"Hero/Heroine (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hero/Heroine&action=edit)" (Johnson) – 3:52
"Top of the World" (Johnson) – 3:36
"Thunder" (Johnson) – 3:56
"Me, You and My Medication" (Johnson, Bleu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bleu_%28musician%29)) – 4:28
"Up Against the Wall" (Johnson, Hollander, Katz) – 3:39
"Dance Hall Drug" (Johnson) – 3:29
"Learning to Fall" (Johnson, Hollander, Katz) – 3:04
"Heels over Head" (Johnson) – 3:08
"Broken Man" (Johnson) – 3:31
"Holiday" (Johnson) – 5:08Dave Katz and Sam Hollander are also noted for being co-writers on the Cobra Starship cd, also wrote some stuff with Gym Class Heroes as well as a few others.

Even still, they only co-wrote 1/3 of the record. Bleu is given a co-writing credit because he performs on "Me, you and My Medication" if i remember correctly.

Many bands use co-writers, pretty much any band that John Feldman works with has a Feldy credit in there somewhere.

You're grasping at straws.

if you just don't like the band, say it. it's a lot easier than trying to diminish their accomplishments.
