It would be an excellent organization if the powerful nations weren't dictating its actions and rendering it impotent.

But I mean, shouldn't the UN step in Nigeria and so forth? I mean what is the point if it just writes letters pretty much. Shouldn't the UN have stepped in with us and Iraq?
The idea itself takes away from the sovereignty of nations.

Sending in armed forces would fuel the conflict. Moreover, the conflict in Nigeria is one that can only be settled by diplomacy, because its roots are purely political.

No, because there is no reason for the US to be there, much less another foreign force.

Nations have the ability to refuse membership. Pre-emptive war, on the other hand, completely strips away the sovereignty of nations.

I think you misinterpreted what I am saying. I think they should have stepped in and blocked us from entering Iraq. The fact that they actually do nothing, means they serve little purpose and is just a more of a stunt by nations to act like they care.

The problem is that too much power is granted to those that are the most economically powerful. Power should be distributed equally among member nations, otherwise we simply have a plutocracy.

True, but the United Nations still does nothing, even with those who opposed to war and have economic power.

The nations that opposed it could have created a resolution against the US, but it simply would have been vetoed. Twenty years ago, an international court sought to hold the US accountable to no avail.

It's not corrupt. On paper, it's an amazing idea and a potentially powerful organization. However, when it gets bull-dozered out of the way any time the big dogs (Hello, Bush admins) want their own way no matter what, kind of defeats the point.

So? It is still UN - related.

i find the UN kind of ironic...one of the main phrases in their charter is "never again" in relation to the genocide of the jews during the Holocaust (meaning that the United Nations would never let genocide happen again)....yet they have taken close to zero action regarding the genocides that happened (Rwanda) and are currently happening (China, Darfur)
True, but the United Nations still does nothing, even with those who opposed to war and have economic power.
The UN doesn't do anything? you're a fucking idiot...
These are just some of the organizations facilitated through or run by the United Nations:
World Health Organization (WHO)
World Bank / International Monetary Fund (IMF)
United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
United Nations Children's Fund(UNICEF)
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)

Because UN Peacekeepers have been no help at all in India, Pakistan, Egypt, Lebanon, Congo, West New Guinea, Yemen, Cyprus, Dominican Republic, Syria, Iran/Iraq War, Angola, Nambia, Nicaragua, Kuwait, El Salvador, Western Sahara, Cambodia, Former Yugoslav Republics, Eritrea, Mozambique, Georgia, Liberia, Haiti, Tajikistan, Croatia, Guatemala, Central African Republic, Sierra Leone, East Timor or the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The UN is wise enough to see that in a lot but not all of cases sending in troops does almsot nothing to help, case in point being Iraq.
hahaha as they watch genocide happen in other places..
Lets clap it up for the UN. I'm not saying Iraq was a great idea, but you would think the UN would stand for peace and eliminate ideologies that drift from peace. Like mass genocide in places such as Darfur.
Or actually doing something to stop us from entering Iraq for even that matter -- and some UN members received bribes from Iraq to go against us.

I imagined they pretty much saw it is the american imperialism for oil that it is.
Why didnt america intervene in Rwanda or Darfur because they dont have any oil to steal thats why.
America has plenty of Oil, trust me.

so why doesnt the UN? If the UN means so much lets see some of those Blue helmets in Uganda, and Darfur, or at least hear someone talk about it.

Oh I agree i was just saying that the US is not the world police force it is just taking advantage of its power for its own benifit and has no interest in humanitarianism.

Why is it wrong for the USA to chose who they help? Seriously though. If every other nation doesn't help, we are are supposed to be the ones...other nations put us in that role, which we really cannot afford to do, even when we are not fighting in Iraq.

Because they attempt to justify there interference on humanitarian grounds when there is a clear flaw in that logic as they dont help none oil bearing coutries militarily.
and other nations didn't help secure the middle east because of oil interests too.

The UN may not be good in conflict resolution and peace-keep missions but its damn good in other areas. The UN has many departments delegated to aid, relief, science, and information.
