Ah, the first stop on the three city tour. I walked 4 blocks from my office up to the MTV studios, as the wind was nearly ripping my face off. I realized how lame it was that a 23-year-old was going into the MTV studios to see a Fall Out Boy taping but, still, I thought it might be cool, maybe they'd play short 8-9 song set and include some songs off the new CD I hadn't heard live yet.

I see the usual suspects outside (95% female, one girl wearing open heeled shoes, in this frigid weather, and took my place in line. As someone who's worked in TV and been to several of these things I knew that even though the email said "You MUST be there no LATER than 7:30AM or you will not be let in" that this wouldn't be the case. 7:30 comes and goes, nothing. 7:45 some MTV interns come out and give us wrist bands. 8:00 comes and I'm constantly moving my fingers to keep them from losing blood, my body can't stop shaking, at 8:15 the big angry security guard comes out to tell us to get into two lines and then announces 15-20 more minutes. At 8:40 the line FINALLY starts to move.

After a totally unecessary security check, we were sitting in the studios. I almost wanted to leave then. Even though I look young for my age, I felt completely out of place. We are led into the studio and told where to sit and then where to stand during the "performance portion." I also didn't realize that it was basically a whole taping of TRL so we'd be there for probably over an hour. Not good for someone who has to get back to work around 10:30-11

However the band came out and played pretty well. My only complaint was the mix was so low that it seemed like the drums and vocals were up way too high with the guitars and bass buried. PErhaps the guitar and bass went straight through the monitors and the amps were merely there for show. Anyways they played "This Ain't A Scene" "Thriller" and "The Take Over, The Breaks Over." Patrick sounded great. During "Thriller" Joe was doing one of his spin moves and fell off the stage into a camera-man. Hilarious. Oh, and my feet still hadn't recovered from waiting outside.

They did the usual bullshit interviews ("What inspired the title?") Pete made some comment with some shitty sexual undertone ("all the best things in life happen in the dark") and it was just odd to see them so close to everyone on stage, yet not really talk to any of the kids there. I mean, I thought one of the things that seperates this band from others is that they do interact with their fans. I personally didn't need to talk to them but I could see some youngsters up front who would've really liked to just say hello or something of that sort. But then again, it is a TV taping so, I guess that's how it goes. Was bummed that NYC got the raw end of the deal, would've preffered an actual show somewhere but I guess thats what goes on when it's 9:30 AM.

Did a big black woman yell at you about how to behave in the studios? She was there when I went last year. And that is pretty crappy about just getting 3 songs on one of the dates of their "3 city, 1 day TOUR". Oh well. I'm sure it was interesting.

i heard they had to redo a song because the fans werent 'into' the song enough, true? i realize its early, but man that woulda been kinda cool to dance on tv. but ya i agree, shows are more intimate than taping for gay mtv
