Alright I'm looking into starting a poppunk/punk band with a few friends of mine. He's an amazing guitarist, and our bassist is pretty awesome as well, and I'm alright on the drums. So this is all good and well...we have diverging musical tastes but our musical choices all seem to kind of go hand in hand...the thing that gets us is..we want to write something innovative. Something a little different than the other poppunk stuff out there. What can we do?

the mistake with most bands just starting out, is they try too hard to say they're different and they just don't produce different music they just sound the same. every band i've been in has been like that everyone likes different music and we sound just like any other local band or band that's already come out.

if everyone in your band likes different music, and everyone in your band has a good amount of talent, then you will probably not sound like everything else

I can see your point, but I think it's also important to make an attempt to put your own little twist on things. For most of us writing music, we're not going to write anything earth shattering, but it is important to make sure you don't sound completely like another band.

i really think people make too much of this. just write your own melodies, and chord progressions or whatever it is you do. and make sure you really really like it because its good, not because its different.

i realize that. but when 3 of the 4 people are talented and the guitar player sucks ass..there is only so much you can do. that band didn't last long.

who needs a guitar player. i'd rather have someone that's good at rubbing a piece of paper against a wall than a shitty guitar player.

Don't play pop-punk would be a good start.

The genre is already overcrowded with bands trying to reinvent themselves in a desperate manner.

Just jam and see what comes out.

You might as well just give up cause there's no such thing as innovative pop punk.
