For those of you who've been following the Alternate Reality Game surrounding the release of Nine Inch Nails (www.nin.com)' Year Zero (April 17th), MTV New has posted an excellent article (http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1552470/20070215/nine_inch_nails.jhtml?rsspartner=rs sYahooNewscrawler) explaining what's been happening much better than any of my posts in the forums have. Check a few news posts down for the first leaked song from the record.
wow.
this is probably the perfect way to market a NIN album too.
the only unnerving thing is that to some extent, the fact that it is all a marketing ploy destroys the entire message. i mean, reznor is talking about how greed has overtaken humanity, and he's running a marketing campaign that tricks die hard fans into spending hours combing through these websites that push ideas that seem genuine, when in the end it's just to get them to buy his album.
am i off base here?

Its meant to be fun and to get into the storyline behind the album.
its completely optional.

i don't see how he's tricking anyone. no one has to go through the sites. i'm a huge nine inch nails fan and i have no plans to spend all my time going through the sites. it's just another way of having the listener feel like an interactive part of the album.

i disagree. it doesnt trick anyone into anything. it just builds more on a concept album. it creates a story and makes the album so much more than just a collection of songs. it brings life to it.

is that serious?
The difference is that no matter how good AFI are, NIN still owns them.

when you put it that way, it does make it sound better.
to be honest i was hoping someone would tell me how wrong i was because i really do feel like it's a great way of getting people more into the music, and NIN is the perfect band to use that kind of idea.
thanks.

Using highlighted numbers found on a new Nine Inch Nails t-shirt being sold at concerts, the phone number (310) 295-1040 plays about a 2 minute recording that is believed to be an intro as well as a portion of the first single "Survivalism" off of the new album Year Zero

i wish someone (maybe even trent himself) would write a book about this same concept, because, personally, i can't get into NIN's music, but i really would like to see what his ideas are.

wow. this simply amazes me. and i cannot stand the wait for this record. i love seeing this concept so intricately woven with the record (and the leaked song is damn fine as well.).
my hat's off to mr. reznor.

I don't follow AFI, because I think they're pretty bad, but from what I understand, this is much more in depth that anything they've done. This also appears to only be the first part, this all started less than a week ago and the album is two months away.
