Matt, you're slow on movies haha.
This movie should've never been translated into Pan's Labyrinth but wonderfully made and I actually like the amount of fantasy they put in. The emphasis was on the totalitarianism of Franco's regime and they tied it in with Ophelia's purity. Whole Jesus symbol, of course. Very Spanish/Mexican style.

was incredibally well done though. i've always been a fan of del toro, and this is his finest piece of work so far.
and who cares if people call it a fantasy movie? yeah, it's not entirely a fantasy movie, but there's too much of it in there to ignore. and i disagree about the girl being delusional. i think it's open for interpretation. i took it that it was all real to her, and that her dying at the end was no big deal because that freed her from that body to allow her to go live as an immortal with her real father. what good is being immortal when you're stuck in the middle of a civil war? either way, she died happy. i really liked the ending.

This movie is nothing short of incredible.
I'll be honest, i saw the trailer and was expecting a kind-of kid's film, but still thought it looked great, then it got to the bottle-bashing part and i realised i was wrong. I was pleasantly surprised though. I thought it was pretty melancholy, almost like a Tim Burton movie, but not cheesey or with a hollywood ending tacked on.
Both. The plot was essentially about a girl and her delusions to escape her horrible reality.
But you can't really call them "delusions," considering she actually escaped the locked room through the chalk door.

I'd buy it as long as it were no more than 40 dollars (I loved the movie that much ). On Ebay it's going for around 20 (+ shipping), but I can't get it as it's a region 3 DVD and it probably doesn't have English subtitles since it's a Korean edition release.

For a film like Pan's Labyrinth, I guess it all just depends what you look for in a film. Most of the things in it that made me love it were fairly subtle elements, and I love it when you have to think about and even maybe research things about a movie.

I went to Pan's to see a fantasy film because thats what was advertised. That's not what I got. Now, while I can appreciate films, once I realized that this film was not what I had intended to see, I started focusing on other elements of it, and was honestly not impressed. If this film actually was more oriented on the girl and the fantasy elements I think it would have been much much better, because the parables and the stuff with the Capitan really just didn't do it for me. There were some fine performances, but I saw plenty of better films than Pans last year.
Well, to each their own
the movie was pretty good

Borat and even Little Miss Sunshine was better than Pan's Labyrinth
No. Borat was a piece of shit...and although LMS was decent Pan's was better.

no, opinion ;p
i saw maybe 300 movies last year, and my god, most of them were horrible.
Anyone who says any year was a bad year for movies clearly doesn't see enough movies:
In 2006, we had The Departed, Children Of Men, Pan's Labyrinth, Half Nelson, The Science Of Sleep, United 93, The Lives Of Others, Letters From Iwo Jima, L'Enfant, Little Miss Sunshine, Casino Royale, Shortbus, Little Children, The History Boys, Volver,
In 2005, we had Capote, Brokeback Mountain, Grizzly Man, Murderball, Cache, Pride And Prejudice, The Squid And The Whale, Hustle And Flow, Mysterious Skin, A History Of Violence, 2046, The New World
In 2004, we had Sideways, The Incredibles, Before Sunset, House Of Flying Daggers, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Maria Full Of Grace, Million Dollar Baby, Spider-Man 2, Kill Bill: Volume 2, The Aviator, I <3 Huckabees
And this year, we already have Zodiac, Death Proof, Hot Fuzz, 28 Weeks Later, Away From Her, Waitress, The Host, The Namesake, The Wind That Shakes The Barley
...and these are all just off the top of my head.

2004 was great, 2005 was great. but last year...
From that list I agree with The Departed, Pan, Half Nelson, Sunshine, Casino Royale, United 93. I saw Iwo Jima this year, in fact, first film i saw this year, and loved it.
this year so far hasnt disappointed me at all, with the exception of Spiderman.
but last year, most of the films i really wanted to see were either bad or didnt live up to promises. or were downright boring.
plus i dont have all that much time to see "more movies," i work 2 jobs, train and go to grad school.

I loved this film. Since I work at Blockbuster I was able to get the DVD early, and the special features are fucking ace.

Wow, mixed feelings about this movie. I don't know what to expect from it.
Off the top of my head: History Boys, Night Watch (and Day Watch in Russia), Little Children, A Scanner Darkly, Little Miss Sunshine, Renaissance, The Departed, and hell, even Borat was better.
Pan's is overrated but Borat isn't? Everyone talks about Borat like it's the best comedy of the century and it's oh so shocking, when it's far from either. Talk about disappointment there.

That's great to hear, I bought it but haven't watched it yet. I was hoping for some good special features.
