President Bush honored the 275th birthday of the nation's first president on Monday, likening George Washington's long struggle that gave birth to a nation to the war on global terrorism.

"Today, we're fighting a new war to defend our liberty and our people and our way of life," said Bush, standing in front of Washington's home and above a mostly frozen Potomac River.

"And as we work to advance the cause of freedom around the world, we remember that the father of our country believed that the freedoms we secured in our revolution were not meant for Americans alone."

true and Bush is obviously responsible for what the speech says since he gives it. but to act as if something in the speech that some may find "stupid" is due to the president's intelligence and not a political move by those around him, i think, is to mischaracterize the situation.

The President decides what he says or doesn't say. If he reads through a speech and is unable to pick out the obvious idiocy that is contained within then he fully endorses the moronic statements when he regurgitates them at a later time.

i agree that if he reads the speech and sees the "obvious idiocy" then he definitely endorses it
i just dont think that he is so stupid that he doesn't notice it, rather i think he knows that comparing this war to the revolutionary war puts it in a better light in some people's minds.

The Revolutionary War is like the War on Terror, The Civil War is like the War on Terror, WW2 is like the War on Terror. These are the comparisions Republican congressman make all the time, especially when they were debating the symbolic resolution on the troop surge. Yet the only comparison they conveniantly leave out is the Vietnam War.

but there are plenty of valid criticisms of the president
i think it is in the best interest of his critics, and people in general, to criticize those issues instead of taking lines from late night monologues and using them in political debate.

dont get me wrong, im all about funny bush jokes, but at some point i think they just give those who defend everything the president does a reason to write off the whole opposition.

im only gonna say it one more time, its not really a big deal
my only point is, when you say hes an idiot, its easy for people to write it off as just a personal attack, no matter how valid it is. however, if you say that he has mishandled the war or bring up a number of other criticisms, then someone will have to actually answer to them. that is all im saying.
