View Full Version : This IS Year Zero

Another new Nine Inch Nails (http://www.nin.com) track from Year Zero (http://yearzero.nin.com) (April 17th) has been found on a flash drive in a bathroom stall on their current European tour. This time it's "Me, I'm Not" (http://www.echoingthesound.org/phpbbx/viewtopic.php?t=20515&start=0). Along with the song, was an mp3 of cricket chirping, which when put through a spectrogram revealed the number: 216.333.1810. Call it.

i just called the number...a voice says "us phone tap case identifier 71839j...file accessed...begin playback." a woman answers the phone and some girl was screaming her head off "mommy! mommy!" and she said something about "he killed joyce in the club" and "some guy came into the club all messed up" and "i locked myself in the stock room." the mom says "nia(??) are you alright" then there was a lot more screaming...fucking weird. maybe it's from a movie or something?

the backward text is from Slaughter-House Five by Kurt Vonnegut....

heres the excerpt:

"All this happened, more or less. The war parts, anyway, are pretty much true. One guy I knew really was shot in Dresden for taking a teapot that wasn't his. Another guy I knew really did threaten to have his personal enemies killed by hired gunmen after the war. And so on. I've changed all the names. I really did go back to Dresden with Guggenheim money (God love it) in 1967. It looked a lot like Dayton, Ohio, more open spaces than Dayton has. There must be tons of human bone meal in the ground.
I went back there with an old war buddy, Bernard V. O'Hare, and we made friends with a cab driver, who took us to the slaughterhouse where we had been locked up at night as prisoners of war. His name was Gerhard Müller. He told us that he was a prisoner of the Americans for a while. We asked him how it was to live under Communism, and he said that it was terrible at first, because everybody had to work so hard, and because there wasn't much shelter or food or clothing. But things were much better now. He had a pleasant little apartment, and his daughter was getting an excellent education. His mother was incinerated in the Dresden fire-storm. So it goes."

...many are speculating that there's a connection tying this record to all the other NIN recordings. Here's a screenshot of the .pdf that came packaged with "with_teeth". It says "the warning" in the middle of the creen and "the warning" is a track on YZ. Also, the pictures of the hand comeing through the clouds and touching tghe earth have been traced back to a track from "the fragile". "The wretched" mentions god arting the clouds and reaching down to earth. also with the introduction of opal as this futuristic drug and the copper refrences from the wiretap site there;s direct connection to the CD single for 'Head Like A Hole" released in '89. The 3 remixes of the track on that single were Opal, Copper, and Soil.

now theres rumors that "Year ZerO' may not be released in a traditional format. Interscope doesn't have the record on its release schedule and Trent hinted a few months back that he was having problems with the label about the "commercial" appeal of the record. Some are now saying that Trent is releasing the album track by track and making it available to fans free on April 13 via the yearzero.nin.com site itself.

Giving this record away for free would be a huge "fuck you" to the record industry specifically Interscope.

here's an excerpt from an interview with Kerrang!

Kerrang!: What's the concept?

Trent Reznor: "I'm trying to avoid getting too detailed about this but I will tell you that this is a concept record, and it's part of a bigger picture of a number of things I'm working on. Essentially I wrote the soundtrack to a movie that doesn't exist. This album is a bit more electronic and I'd say rhyme plays a bigger element in it than in the past and it's veering away from concern about song structure and getting played on the radio."

Kerrang!: Are you talking about some kind of multimedia event?

Trent Reznor: "My goal is that the music can be interpreted with the richest context. So what I'm immersed in is a way to achieve that. Now that albums have gone from 12 inches of real estate with artwork and a whole aesthetic, to CDs, which are ugly and disposable, to nowadays just being a file on a computer, it's led me to putting a lot of thought in to ways to present music that still makes it feel important and that has depth and purpose."

Kerrang!: Will it be a heavy album?

Trent Reznor: "It's not heavy in any kind of metal type sense, I'd say a big inspiration sonically would be early PUBLIC ENEMY records, a collage of sound type of thing, not heavy in a metal guitar kind of way."

Kerrang!: On "The Downward Spiral" and "The Fragile" you blended together an extreme amount of disparate sounds and layers — is this moving further in that direction?

Trent Reznor: "Well Alan Moulder (long-time collaborator) was stunned when he first heard it. Normally a ProTools session has alot of tracks and this time he was like, 'You're kidding me, it's only this much stuff?' The end result has a bit of racket to it — it's much more improvisational, less refined. With this record I feel a lot less concerned about what people think about it — especially the dying record industry. I couldn't care less about that right now."

I am the opposite, seeing all this DID make me want to.. Only problem is I STILL don't like what I hear unfortunately, not for me I'm afraid. It's very clever though, I am sure tons of people will be taken in by it, like this rumoured snuff film. You can make people believe anything.

Generally, we refer to this as a ARG [alternate realtiy game] made in order to promote a product by gripping you by the proverbial testes and luring you into a story line. this whole thing is very x-files - even some of the titles seem like x-files references to me. "i am trying to believe," "the truth," "zero sum," and the different government conspiracies. it's awesome. this has actually piqued my interest.

I don't know anything about the AFI stuff, anyone care to explain what they did?

From what I understand, they have been doing something very similar to this for a number of years with fake websites, outgoing voicemail messages with clues, special packaging, and cool shit like that. For example, I think the rabbits on DecemberUnderground have some special significance, and if you look at certain pictures at certain angles or something, different things appear.

Sometimes they give clues to secret shows that only diehard fans will find out about, and others give info about upcoming albums and such. Looking back, it seems like their entire catalogue has been part of a bigger "theme". It's pretty cool to learn about.

check out http://board.despairfaction.com/showthread.php?t=4971 for more AFI secret stuff. It gives a lot more information than I could ever understand or digest.

Thanks a lot chap. Just reading through that link now.... Trying to follow it haha. It's some intense stuff, EXTREMELY interesting though. Some of it's probably like them 9/11 emails you see .. ooh 9+1+1 = America deliberately let it happen..... but this seems very entertaining and clever. It'd be great if all this stuff is planned, extremely clever.

no i dont think so at all. AFI was pretty insane. All I know is that they had a lot of crazy shit going down and in the end, if you followed it long enough, and didnt think you were crazy, you were rewarded. In the end there were 5 types of flowers. And you had to meet 5 people from the compaign. And when you met them you gave them one of the 5 flowers. and the person gave you a secret pass to a exlcusive concert. Its a lot deeper then that but I'm too lazy to go into it. There are websites that tell you all the shit that went down.

as for this... i think there is a deeper meaning to it all that will come out too play sooner or later. I'm sure a lot more crazy shit will go down the closer we get to April 15. But the websites and tall that shit came from tshirts. Like they were hidden in the design. And that started last year, so obviously Trent put a lot of thought in this. He is a fucking genius.

I think he is about to throw a big middle finger up to the record industry and the state of "rock" these days. I'm excited.

IF NIN is copying AFI then AFI is copying Manrilyn Manson who started something similair in 1998 to promote "Mechanical Animals".

...btw, the most recent jumpdrive was found in the balcony area of the venue, not in the bathroom like the first one. The jumpdrive's come with instructions which some of the people that found them have scanned online.

...many are speculating that there's a connection tying this record to all the other NIN recordings.

NIN copy AFI because AFI did it a year ago? That's the funneist thing I've read on here. LQTM.

it was found through spectrograph analysis of 2432.mp3 the phone number is apparently a wire-tap recording of a phone call, it also gives the case number 71839j for use on the us wiretap website.
The numbers area code and prefix trace back to a number originating from cleveland, ohio. When cross referencing phone company info, it seems that the number belongs to GotVMail.com. GotVMail.com provides multiple lines for people to call in and listen to the message.
Once the line picks-up dial 385# (other numbers may work, this is what I tried) and you enter into a voicemail system. You are able to enter in a last name and so far I have not been able to get any last names to work. I have tried different names from the name list on the site and the names of the people at gotVMAIL neither have worked. I have also tried.

the 216 area code is the area code for the state of ohio
the 333 prefix is specific to Cleveland itself, and assigned to Ameritech of Ohio as a Residential or Business line

Roby: Hello?

Mia: Roby? Roby? Roby, are you there? Oh my god, I'm at the club, you need to get me out of here. I'm going to die, oh my God, I'm going to die.

(Gunshot and scream)

Roby: Mia, what's going on?

Mia: He killed Joey so I locked myself in the stock room and now I can't get out and everybody's got it.

Roby: What is going on?

Mia: This guy, he came into the club really freaked out. And we, we didn't even see the knife. And his shirt was soaked red. And Joey said "Holy shit, you need a doctor". And then the guy just stabbed him, and he was sweating blood, and screaming, and he wouldn't stop until somebody killed him with a beer bottle.

(Crash, scream from Mia)

Roby: Honey, okay wait. I'm going to call the cops.

Mia: (Screaming) They're outside, they're outside!

Mia: Don't, the cops are already here. They're the ones who locked us in.

Roby: What?

Mia: I've gotta fight, I need a weapon...a gun.

Roby: You're going to be okay, you're going to make it out of there. I'll be up there in five minutes

Roby: Mia, you okay?

(Breathing)

Mia: Roby, you there? Blood...there's blood coming out of my skin...

Roby: Mia, listen. You need to listen.

Mia: Roby, I need you to take care of my dog. Okay, the food..

(Screaming)

Roby: Mia! Mia, what's going on?!

Mia: Get me the hell out of here.

Roby: Tell me what's going on.

Mia: Oh my God, please. Help me, please, God.

Roby: Mia!! Mia!!!!

(Re-order tone and hangup)

(NOTE: There appears to be another Morse code signal here between the hangup and the automated voice saying "Goodbye." However it is difficult to make out using the file below due to the low 8KHz sampling rate. It's speculated that the number is 24.3.1.)

Automated female voice: Goodbye.
