So i'm finishing up Cities for the first time...

Is it just me, or does the guy's vocals seem really overproduced?

Judge'sDaughter
10/10/07, 06:16 AM
It seems like he trys really hard, but I'm still an Anberlin fan.

Cities was a bit dissapointing, but the lyrics were catchy, so I'm good.

His voice may sound overproduced... but once you see him live, he really can sing that well live, I thought so too after Cities came out, then I saw them a month later and wow the man can sing, even better than when they were touring off Never Take Friendship Personal.

Brokenhill
10/10/07, 09:55 AM
I haven't heard that friends album yet...so maybe i'll start there.

Many people would argue it's better, but I really like Cities more, but just by a tiny ammount.

Blueprints For The Black Market is definitely good for what it is.

Chris Reynolds
10/10/07, 10:34 AM
I saw them live with Reliant K years ago, and they weren't very good when I saw them (this was right after BPFTBM came out). I honestly can't remember why I went to that show, as I don't like Reliant K and wasn't a huge fan of Anberlin. I can't remember the other band playing, and I think I went for them.

hailthewarrior
10/10/07, 10:37 AM
They've gotten much better live since then, Chris.

Chris Reynolds
10/10/07, 11:07 AM
I would assume so, naturally. I just never got into them, they were a little too poppy for my tastes. Not that I question their talent or ability. And didn't they recently move from Tooth and Nail to a mainstream label?

cities was a much more powerful album than the other two
for me, anberlin always has just standout tracks that i listen to all the time, and not the whole album

i was able to listen to cities much more intently than friendship

Yeah. I have seen Mae twice and didn't really like them. On the tour Anberlin did with Bayside, Stephen was outside talking to fans like 5 minutes after their set. They are all really nice guys as well. I can't wait to see them at Cornerstone again this year.

ive seen em twice as well, and i personally think theyre fantastic.
but u cant really compare em to Mae, cuz like they focus on different aspects.
thats just my personal opinion tho, me being a pretty big Mae fan lol.
but the MSC tour definitely pwnd.
they were all solid, especially Anberlin.

Cities has to be one of my favorite albums of all times.
and the other 2 records totally built it all up for Cities.
i love both BFTBM and NTFP, and without em, u have no Anberlin today.

It's probably because Anberlin isn't extremely obscure or experimental. They don't do a whole lot to make themselves stand out. They just write really good songs.

Completely agree. Cities, was sorta a let down for me, especially after the stellar release Never Take Friendship Personal. The melodies and choruses and writing and stuff were pretty much perfect for that album.

I'm going with

Cities: they're best work yet, hopefully the new album changes that
NTFP: great album, showed a lot of growth from blueprints
Blueprints: good first releases, I never really liked this album much but with every listen I like it more and more.

Lost Songs: its ok, but could've been better..

I heard a couple of thir songs a few years ago and I thought some (such as A Day Late) were mediocre. Then last week my friend was asking me about them and I was kinda bored so I downloaded Cities and I was absolutely blown away by it. I'm going to save up for my own copy.

Time for a bit of discussion on the new album.

New Surrender was originally scheduled for a 5th August release, but has now been moved back to September 30th (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=321717").

What are your expectations for this album; do you think they will press on with a similar vein to Cities or will we see a whole new style?
Also, what is your opinion on the band's plan to re-record "The Feel Good Drag" (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=313158)?

Discuss.

I think they'll keep on with the style they've been doing as they've always had the same sort of formula through all three cds thus far, they've just made slight progressions and do it better than just about anyone else.

I didn't get it, probably because he thinks the name is Amblin' as in ambling.

As for the CDs...Cities is definately my favorite CD of theirs. I think it's more complex than their other CDs, plus I just like the songs better. Even though I usually like older CDs from bands better.
Generally I like heavier music than Anberlin, like Bullet For My Valentine, A Skylit Drive, etc. Screamo is awesome. But for some reason Anberlin is my favorite.

We're the last of the sleepless ones
Left behind by those we left behind tonight
Quiet now let our poison take
Were we always just your lost cause mistakes

Wait for me, will you wait for me
Need you on my side
Way for me, make way for me
With arms wide

Alone, left alone
Watch us slowly disappear with time
Unknown, still unknown
Forgotten, lost, and left behind

Dark lit streets are no place for kids
But it gives us more of a home than you ever did
We're the silentists left to our own demise
You're still our last chance to get out of this place alive

Wait for me, will you wait for me
With arms wide

Alone, left alone

Disappear is pretty good. I like it as much as Godspeed which is the first song I heard off of Cities, and it ended up being one of the worst songs on the album, so I'm super excited for New Surrender. I'd be happy if they went in the direction of NTFP, even though Cities is my favorite of theirs by far.

I thought their albums were very different from each other. Blueprints was more poppy and happy with some more punk or rock tracks. NTFP was harder rock than any of the albums, and seemed to have more tracks about love and breaking up than any album also. Cities seemed to be the most lyrically mature with some more pop tracks and rock tracks. I don't think Lost Songs counts when you're reviewing Anberlin as it was mostly different versions of their existing songs and covers that weren't on their regular CDs.

Haight St is good. I don't think this album is quite living up to Cities. It's good though.

I felt bad too but it just feels so good when you listen to it. I promised myself I am either going to buy it when it comes out for me or a friend.

I'm waiting for the CD to come out. I want to hear it for the first time with better sound than mp3 quality.

Just curious, to the people who downloaded it and like it, will you also be buying it when it comes out?
