how did you become a fan of your team(s)

Arkansas Razorbacks - My dad went to school there, and I also went there for a year. I'm at Okla State now, but I still cheer for Arkansas every game.
St. Louis Cardinals - Again, my dad is a big fan, and this team just easily became my favorite.
Indiana Pacers - I followed them when Larry Bird started coaching and stuck with them because of Reggie Miller. I know it'll sound stupid, but I honestly became more of a fan by playing as them on NBA Live 2000.
Denver Broncos - I'm not 100% sure why I started liking them, but I disliked them the past 2 years because of Plummer. Now that Cutler is the starter, I'll start following them better.

Ohio State(FB,BB) - Gred Oden
Michigan(FB) - Friends live in Windsor which is right across the bridge from Detroit/Michigan
Duke - JJ Redick
Phoenix Suns - Steve Nash
I guess I really like individual players rather than teams, but i follow the teams because of them.

I don't root for teams outside of my state. Except for Baylor football, but that's just because I root for underdog college sports programs in big conferences to turn around a history of losing.
Im glad someone asked this question...I dont have a team outside of Detroit but I have a friend who became a bears fan last year.I asked him why he was a bears fan and not a lions fans his answer was..."I hate the Lions because they lose I like the Bears because they win."He went to town his sudden love of the bears too, he bought a couple jerseys and put all this crap in his AIM profile, fallowing the Bears, like posting their record and bitching about Grooseman.Needless to say we had fun with him after the superbowl.

No one should be a fan of the Lions or support that franchise ever again until the entire ford family dies or sells the team.

san francisco 49ers- when i played tball when i was like 8, our team won the championship and got to pick out 1 team banner, i liked red and gold, picked the niner pennant and liked them since.
denver nuggets & colorado rockies- moved to colorado when i was 11, was taken to these events and loved them since.

I see your point but I just dont go to the games, or buy team merchandise. I'll always cheer for the Lions but Im not going to spend 50 bucks on a ticket which is all the Fords care about.
Just like when the Tigers had all those losing years, my dad and me would go to atleast 10 games a year up until 2002 when we cut it back to only a couple games because we cant resist going to baseball games, so it was like not going to any for us. Now ofcourse we bought season tickets lol but what Im saying is, if you want to send a message to an owner dont show up to games but still be a fan of the team.

I live in Alaska, so I'm a free agent fan. I can like who I like. Although, it goes as follows.
Seattle Mariners since 1989 - Logical team for an Alaskan to like, plus there was a rookie when I was five who was the man - Junior Griffey.
Indiana Pacers since 1994 - 25 points in the 4th quarter against the Knicks, Reggie Miller became my favorite player in sports that night. I've followed them since then, regardless of Reggie retiring - even though I (and the Pacers) miss him horribly.
New England Patriots since 1993 - Drew Bledsoe was a big time Northwest success story, and my Dad thought he was going to be a star so he collected his sports cards. As a sports card addict, I liked the idea of having a favorite football player, so as a nine year old I adopted my Dad's new favorite. Basically it went from me liking Drew Bledsoe, to me liking the Pats and Drew, to screw Drew, it's all about the Pats.
All three teams I started liking because of specific players, yet I continued liking well after those players actually left.

Well, I don't think the Tigers and Lions are anything alike. I don't think Illitch was purposefully not spending money because there was no reason to. He was losing money each year he owned the team and 2006 was his first profitable year as Tigers owner.
The Ford Family never loses money on the Lions since at Ford Field they get all revenue from ticket sales, merch, concession stands, etc. They didn't get all that from The Silverdome from what I understand.

they are so off and on
They've been good the last 3 seasons. 91 points in 03/04, 106 last year, and they're on pace to beat that again.

New York Yankees - We don't have a major league baseball team, so most people around here settle for the Braves, but my dad was a Yankee fan, both my grandfather's were Yankee's fan and it was a matter of time before I became one. Really, my interest in the Yankees ignited when the Yankees played the Braves in the World Series. I began to have a strong distaste for the Braves through hearing every single day about Chipper Jones and Greg Maddux, so that's when it was finally settled.
Chicago Bulls - My mom went to UNC and absolutely loved Michael Jordan, Sam Perkins and all of those crazy people. I inherited her love for MJ, while becoming obviously an NC State fan, and as a young kid, who didn't love MJ?
we are cured
02/22/07, 07:08 AM
i'm totally local. i don't see a problem with liking a team from out of your locale, however.
rangers - grandfather and father were rangers fans, but i actually started watching every game the year after the devils won in 95.
knicks - this kinda evolved, i was a michael jordan fan when i was younger because he would always beat the knicks and my dad hated that. but what kid didn't like michael jordan...anyway when he retired (on my birthday no less), i became a knicks fan.
mets - some of my first words, along with some springsteen lyrics, were 'let's go mets yankees stink.' my grandparents were all brooklyn dodgers fans, and it was heresy for them or their children to go over to the 'dark side.'
jets - i don't know how this one happened. i was never really that big of a football fan, though i did root for the 49ers in the 95 superbowl. i just remember keyshawn's book, give me the damn ball, and them sucking so bad that i rooted for them. then parcells came over, and i guess that was that.

I generally only watch Raptors and Jays games, Im not a big enough fan of either sport to watch other teams play. For football Ill watch whatever is on tv but was always a Broncos fan because I loved Elway. Ill watch any and every team play hockey and consider myslef a fan of the LA Kings, just because I used to have a hard on for Gretzky back in the day and still follow the team. Fuck the Red Wings and the Hurricanes though.

My Dad was born just outside of Boston. The Air Force moved him to California where (after a few bumps) he met my mom. I'm the 4th of 4 and the only Boston fan....So basically I was his last hope and had no chance to decide on my own.
I have his autograph from like forever ago. Well, when he was on the Rangers in the late 90s.
I pretty much like all NY teams. Though I can understand liking teams your family likes, because I pretty much inherited all my Dads teams.

I lived much of my life in Alabama and both of my parents attended Auburn, so there's that one. I was born in Mobile, and the Saints are pretty much considered the "hometown" team there. My mom's grandmother was a huge Braves fan. I don't exactly know why I latched onto the Celtics, I've just always had a thing for that team.

vancouver canucks - quite an odd pick from someone that lives in florida but it started in 1994. our whole family were huge hockey fans and i was like eight so i was in the phase of rooting for the best team. i rooted for the red wings that year who lost in the first round, and then in the second round i started to follow the canucks, they lost to in the finals that year and i have followed them ever since.

OSU-Been a fan of OSU football and basketball as long as I can remember. My grandparents used to live in Columbus, and when I was a kid and we would go out to Columbus, my grandpa and I would watch OSU games, and I would root for them with him.
Oakland-About 7-8 years ago, I started paying more and more attention to baseball, and I liked the Big 3 in Oakland.
I casually claim the Broncos, but only because I love John Lynch. Past Lynch, I could care less about the Broncos.

Texas Tech Red Raiders - Both parents went there, visit the university at least twice a year
Texas Longhorns - lived in Austin, grew up a fan, visit the university at least twice a year
Detroit Pistons - live here, started following basketball here
Detroit Tigers - live here, the only baseball in town, love to watch them
New York Mets - lived in New Jersey, didn't like following the front-running Yanks
Dallas Cowboys - lived in Dallas too, only respectable football team in Texas
Detroit Lions - never heard of them
San Diego Chargers/New Orleans Saints - when I lived in Austin, Drew Brees was the QB of the local high school (my mom's alma mater) and I've been a fan of LT since he was a sophomore at TCU

Suns - Steve Nash and their exciting, uptempo style of play. It was so refreshing from watching boring teams like San Antonio and Detroit that it restored my faith in the NBA. Ever since then I've rooted for them.
Red Sox - I've hated the yankees since I was about 13 years old, so rooting for Boston became a logical conclusion. I loved Nomar and I was pretty much just a real loose fan until I totally jumped the bandwagon in '04 when they completed the greatest playoff comeback/choke in the history of baseball. Ever since then they've been my #2 baseball team to root for.
Bengals - kind of a recent thing. I just love Chad Johnson and TJ Houshmenzadeh, and I started loving watching their passing game when they were on, so I sort of declared them my 2nd team to root for since they are in a different conference.
I used to be a really big Pacers fan because of Reggie Miller, but over the past 3 years that's totally fizzled because I hate their lineup, so it's hard to root for a team who has pretty much no players I like.

Kansas Jayhawks - I loved Kirk Hinrich, and they won me a Bracket pool when they lost to Syracuse in the finals, I think I made about $90 off of it. I followed them the next year with Simien, and I loved Aaron Miles as well...and it just stuck from there.
Houston Oilers - Warren Moon...once he moved to the Vikings, I stopped caring about the team

Atlanta Braves -- they were the only MLB team on TV when I was a kid. Blue Jays are closer, and that's why I like them in the AL.
UNC Tar Heels -- for some reason, everyone around here likes Duke or UNC. I like UNC. Personal preference.
Edmonton Oilers -- I like watching the 10:00 hockey games on Saturday nights when I'm home. I just love the way this team has always played.
Tampa Bay Bucs -- my uncles live in the Tampa area and have hooked me up with merch since the orange and white days.

NY Yankees - Closest team to me as I'm on the western side of CT and I don't like the Mets.
Miami Dolphins - when I was very young my older brother like the Bills. I watched a game with him and they played the Dolphins. Naturally I rooted against the Bills and well about 16 years later here I am.
Carolina Hurricanes - because they used to be the Hartford Whalers. Bastards.....

I'm from Pennsylvania, and I like:
Buffalo Bills - mainly because my uncle got me into them. While growing up, it was a struggle between my dad (Steelers fan) and my uncle (Bills fan). I went with Buffalo, and I despise the Steelers.
Colorado Avalanche - Honestly, I've always been a big Joe Sakic fan. I followed him and the Nordiques, and fell in love.
--Buffalo Sabres - they get an honorable mention because their fairly close to me, and I used to go to games all the time. They're dear to my heart.
Michigan Wolverines - I loved their helmets when I was young and impressionable, and from that it evolved into a passion.
Chicago Cubs - I went to a Cubs game when I was like 8 years old, and I got to go out on the field before a game and meet a bunch of players (Turk Wendell and Brian McRae are the the only ones I can remember). I don't really follow MLB, but I'd say I'm a Cubs fan.
Arsenal FC - Thierry Henry's sick wit it, duh.
That's about it. I'm not huge on basketball, so as of right now I don't have a favorite team.

i dont think i mentioned Rudy or Ace Ventura in my original post... ur assuming i root for notre dame bc of rudy... not the case whatsoever (i didnt see rudy for the first time until senior year of high school) and i liked the dolphins before ace ventura came out bc of Dan Marino... who is my favorite player of all time. i dont have an argument for the cubs... that movie was the first thing to come to mind. there wasnt a moment in my life when i remember rooting for them though... they just like grew on me

Dallas Cowboys: The first football game I ever watched was Super Bowl XXVII, and I said whoever won would be my favorite team, and of course, Dallas beat Buffalo 52-17.

phoenix suns-- when i started watching basketball, i began to like jason kidd a lot. at the time he had just been traded to the suns. even after he left, i still followed them, they just became my favorite team.
any other team i like or root for usually has a player who i love, and i will switch teams depending where that player goes.

I like the Ottawa Senators, because of all the U of Wisconsin ties/former players.

ace ventura?
i think seeing a team on a movie might be the dumbest reason to cheer for a team i've seen yet.
I like the Penguins because of Sudden Death
