Morello - 12 Ways to Breathe
Released July 18th, 2006
I Scream Records
Who?
Bastard children of post-hardcore out of Dublin, Ireland. Apparently purveyors of Irish-rock, and sidesteppers from Flogging Molly’s bartime gin-and-platonic. 12 Ways to Breathe is the band’s newest rough-neck release kind enough to provide some pretty solid tracks, if not a completely manic collection of unexpected frenzy.
How Is It?
This album has been sitting in my “To Do” pile for some time now. Only a couple days ago did I really listen to find it’s quite good. One pass of the album’s opening song, “Fade Out”, pumps you full of enough technical guitar slams, screamed choruses, and an almost ‘epic’ gruff to send you through 12 Ways to Breathe with as much energy as one could initially hope for. The drive of the album always relies on guitarist David McAree’s tail-sliding, ultra-technical leads and guitarist Darren Mulligan’s street-punk inspired backing strums. Speaking of various members, vocalist Stephen Mulligan should never be a renown singer, but he fits Morello’s scope to a T. Here in lies one of the flaws of the album, though. Stephen’s voice is often too “distant” to give a forceful vocal handle on each song. This is very noticeable on the song “I Hate You and Yours” and, likewise, somewhat apparent on most other tracks as well. Call it a production flaw, but don’t let it keep you from finding something in Morello’s newest. Go get it tiger.
