emo is garbage...not the band garbage...but it's terrible. Involves guys, losing their girls, or not getting the girl, and then crying...whining...bitching...and crying some more. Since you're more into metal, screamo might be your thing. It's more..."aggressive" let's say. The lyrics are a little more intense. It has the same basis as emo, stupid heartbreak, but instead of crying, you slit your wrists. It also has a little harder sound than emo.
Someone delete this, because SOMEONE didn't read the forum guidelines.

I'm glad no one's mentioned Dashboard yet. Dashboard is not true emo. It has the emo mood, but it lacks the musical style of real emo. Actually, from what I've heard of the upcoming album, their style is beginning to bring itself into true emo. But classic Dashboard is NOT emo. Classic Dashboard is unclassifiable. The best description I could come up with would be Sad Acoustic Alternative Pop.
Some good examples of real true emo are The Get Up Kids and The Early November.
Some people have mentioned Saves the Day, and I know that many consider this band to be emo, but I disagree. Saves the Day is pop-punk.
Some bands that many don't consider to be emo but (by my definition) ARE emo are Senses Fail (as mentioned above) and --- get this --- Finch.

Everyone keeps saying emo is about guys who can't get girls. I have no idea what you guys are talking about. Most emo songs are about being in love, or having been in love and fallen out of it. People who can't get girls don't sing about these things.
Stop trying to define emo. Really, it gets old.

i agree. infact, i think that the whole meaning..and even concept..of emo gets hidden, or smothered rather, beneath the music of bands categorized with the likes of finch, senses fail, and thursday. and that's the very reason why. emo can't truly be categorized. it's all the music policing internet fucks that have to slap a label on every goddamn sound they come into contact with that make questions like 'what is emo' even come up. if i had to give an example of an emo band, however, i'd probably stick with brand new. they're sound is different from all the other sounds being produced out there, and the lyrics are emotionally interwoven with experience, firsthand heartfeltness (if that's a word), and genius. despite all the kids out there who hate brand new for one reason or another, pretty much everyone has to admit that their lyrics are far from gradeschool quality. all in all, emo stands for emotional. draw your own conclusions.

07/26/03, 08:28 PM
No, emo is actually about a 19 year old genre, and the word's been used since 1987 or so. It stands for emotional hardcore, since emo grew straight from the hardcore scene. Brand New is not an emo band. They're pop-punk. Not all pop-punk has to sound like Blink 182 remember. They're still a pop-punk band.

We're not talking about opinions, we're talking about facts. Rites Of Spring formed in 1984 and at either a RoS concert or Embrace concert, some crazy fan yelled out "emo" to describe the sound. It's just stuck since then. Any true emo fan will tell you the word doesn't stand for emotional. That's just silly, since mostly all music would be emo. It's a sub-genre of hardcore with a distinct sound and history, and none of it includes bands like Brand New.
seans krazy fact of the day: if u rearrange the letters of emo kids, you get moe! wow thats krazy!

new sounds are created, people get likings to a certain sound and pretty much starts it's own genre.
as for this emo crapp. emo stands for EMOTIONAL HARDCORE.... Dashboard is NOT emo, nor is Finch (the fucker that said that needs to be shot in the foot), Thursday isn't emo, neither is Senses Fail (Despite what MP3.com says). Saves the Day is no way emo and The Early November is definetly not emo. You guys have all been categorizing your pop-punk bands as emo. Emo isn't fairly new, the only person here who knows his emo stuff would be AFittingLine.... congrats bro

Sometimes genres die out a little, and a new sound emerges and people attach the "post" to it. Listen to Fugazi's old stuff. Do they sound like Minor Threat or any of that other tough guy or sXe 80's hardcore to you? No, they were doing something different. They are a forefather of post hardcore. There's also post rock (Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emepror, Sigur Ros, etc.). I don't know how that genre title came to be, but it is accepted to call those bands it. And there's post-emo indie rock. There was a time in the mid 90's where emo basically died, and a new sound was happening. That's what Sunny Day Real Estate was for their first two albums. They were never an emo band. They were an indie rock band that took minor influences from emo. Mineral is also a post-emo indie rock, and my favorite one.
I just bought the new Mogwai album. I don't know what to think of it yet. I guess I need to just listen to it some more.

Kevin, you saved an unsalvageable thread
I didn't like the new Mogwai at first, but I'm coming around (I think)
People who need to have things labelled are anal retentive. When you can do a scientific experiment that shows a band to be "emo", then I will listen to your definition. Otherwise, I don't give a flying fuck what you say.

I didn't say that it doesn't exist, I said I don't care.
So when it gave birth to emo, did the hardcore scene have to undergo a c-section? Was it a difficult birth? I understand that there are often complications after giving birth to a music scene. How long did it take the hardcore scene to recover after it left the hospital? How much did emo weigh when it was born?
I was 2 years old when emo was born, I wonder if it graduated in 2002....

Oh man, I was like you once too. I don't know how many paragraphs of mine went over the heads of board members. I probably posted in at least 10 "What is emo?" threads. Each time, I thought that I had settled the matter for the board. Within a week, the same arguments would resurface. You're knowledge is impressive, but few are willing to listen to someone with a haughty arrogance. At least, they are not willing while you are fairly new and picking fights with members that people have grown to appreciate and respect.

Being nice about everything doesn't last long after all the idiotic encounters and pages upon pages of debates/arguments.

Anyway, I've been posting on message boards for years too. I generally tire of them after a period and move on. I didn't suggest that you be nice, merely that you not turn people off to your knowledge by coming across as a prick. Colin is well aware of what emo is, he's not 14. Don't make it your personal mission to educate everyone, and you'll enjoy yourself a lot more.
