Not bad, I've got work at Gamestop in a couple hours and then I'm leaving for Florida on Thursday for a week. What have you been up to?
Ps. The thread came about because I've been watching most my shows in HD now and I notice a difference when I throw on a movie. I'm way pickier now and I was wondering if anyone here had one.

Not until they come down in price.Yep. I'm not looking forward to upgrading my DVD collection either. Can you play regular DVD's on blu-ray?

I'm tempted to get the HD-DVD for the 360 but I'm heistant because I don't want to waste my money on something thats gonna become a dead technology. If I want to watch a HD dvd, I'll download and rent it off the 360 or I'll just do an on-demand. It's too pricey right now other wise.

I'd need to invest in a TV and a player, and quite frankly, I just don't feel the need to do it at this point, not for the prices they're at.

My older brother bought me a TV for christmas. (the greatest gift ever). SO now I can worry about the player issues

My parents have an HD DVD player.

I just don't like the idea of paying 25-30 bucks for Blu-Ray or HD-DVDs. I mean, I guess you get what you pay for.
But I think my parents just got one for our HDTVs.

Yeah im not looking forward to DVDs becoming dead technology like the VHS. But as long as they are still compatible with the new players then my collection wont be a waste.
I have a PS3, I'm assuming that counts.

I've got no interest in HD DVDs. At least not until they make normal sized cases at a decent price with only one format.

I have the HD DVD player add-on for the 360. I love it.

Amazon has pretty decent prices. Last year you could buy 3 HD DVDs and receive 10% off the order and 10% off each order after that for a year. It's a good deal. But I can understand wanting to wait on a format.

for the 360 all you need to spend is 200, you get the drive, a movie, and a media remote, if you factor out the remote and the movie then its like 140-150 for it. My BIGGEST issue is that the dvds need to be released in one format and what I think really blows is that ANY sony pictures movie (the prestige) will be blu-ray not hd.

i have 1 of both. Xbox 360 HD-DVD, and the PS3. I still watch mostly regular dvd's though.

I'm not really tech-savvy, but which format will ultimately become "the" format for dvds? blu-ray or HD? and i know that they are both hd, but is there a difference in terms of picture quality between the two?

When they first came out, blu-ray titles had inferior picture quality when compared with HD DVD, but now it's pretty much even. The main differences between the two formats to me are:
HD DVD hardware is cheaper
Blu-ray has more studio support
HD DVD has support for more interactive features (HDi)
Blu-ray has a large install base b/c of PS3 (whether or not that will matter much has yet to be seen)
Both support some form of lossless audio.

You worry about the look of the case and I'll enjoy my movies with amazing picture quality and sound. What a dumb statement.

Haha that's what I'm worried about. I'm so used to watching my tv shows in HD I started noticing the difference between that and my dvds and it bugs the hell out of me. I obviously don't have 1200 to spend on the player that does both, so I guess I'm gonna try to save up for a 360 and a ps3.
Are you sacrificing quality on the next gen consoles versus the stand alone players?

From the reviews and articles comparing the various options I have been reading in various magazines, they all seem to say that at this point the stand alone players aren't advanced enough in options and processing power to warrant spending so much money on them, so they tend to all lean towards picking up a PS3 and an Xbox360

I do not own a PS3 (or Blu-ray player) so I can't speak for that. But as far as the 360 add-on is concerned, the only thing you are missing is the ability to output Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD (the two lossless audio formats). But, for most people (myself included), this is not an issue because my surround sound receiver does not have HDMI inputs on it.
Some stand alone players have analog (red and white) 5.1 outputs that can then be plugged into the analog 5.1 inputs on receivers, and this will allow for lossless audio. But again, my receiver does not have this, so it wasn't an issue. My receiver only has inputs for optical and toslink.
The 360 DOES play Dolby Digital Plus which is a lossy audio format, but still has a much higher bitrate than regular Dolby Digital. Also, MS is working on a patch that will re-encode TrueHD format to a high bitrate DTS (rather than Dolby Digital Plus) signal for those that cannot take advantage of the lossless formats.

to anyone that has purchased one outside of a gaming system...why??? aren't you worried that your technology will lose out and you'll have a newage laserdisc player...the whole thing seems stupid, i'm all for competion but not at the kind of prices were at now
