View Full Version : Friends' Taste in Movies

Before I get into what this thread will be about, I will relay today's experience that inspired it. Quite frankly, I'm just making this thread so I can tell the story.
I was at my school's library today with two of my friends (both girls), and we started talking about movies because another table had mentioned The Departed. Anyway, the one girl had her headphones in, and the other one I asked if she had seen the Departed. She hadn't, so I immediately recommended it. The other girl had heard us talking about movies, so she butted in asking what particular film we were talking about. When we told her, she replied, exaggerating, "The Departed is the worst movie ever. All it is about is tough guys dropping the f-bomb every second word and blowing their heads off."
Now, this is disagreeable for many reasons, but that wasn't what made me angry and annoyed enough to make this thread. After giving her reasons why I enjoyed it (and why I thought it was the best movie of 06), I added on that it had won the Oscar for best picture, because that seemed like the only way I was going to convince her that it wasn't as horrible as she imagined. This is what she said:
"The only reason it won that is because it had all the big names."
Now, I understand that the movie in question is not one that really appeals to certain girls, but ... I almost fucking left. Putting up with that kind of narrow-mindedness is not how I planned my trip to the library that day.
Anyway, anyone else have stories about friends that have very different taste in movies than you? Or ones that assume "critics know nothing about movies" (seriously, I have heard that one before)?

I honestly don't feel like its Marties best film or near his best. I liked Mean Streets, Goodfellas, Taxi-Driver, Casino. Raging Bull, & Gangs of New York alot more.
I personally liked Letters from Iwo Jima more.
I have basically showed my friends movies I enjoy and they seem to like them too. I have a couple of friends that have really good taste in movies to begin with.
One time though a girl I work with never even seen Eternal Sunshine. I knew she would like it so I mentioned it to her for like 2 months straight. She finally rented it and now loves me because of it.

I can totally understand on both accounts, but still ... saying that the only reason it won and was critically acclaimed because it had big names is ridiculous.

You're lucky. Can you imagine having a friend who says that "The Dukes of Hazzard" is one of the best comedies of the last few years?

My friends..for the most part have a good taste in movies and would never say such a thing about The Departed. Even though i haven't seen it i still find it hard to believe its horrible especially with Jack in it.

i have this friend who is a complete music freak. you can't have a conversation about movies within 50 feet of here without her putting her own 2 cents in. it's horrible because she's so defensive about it.

One of my best friends favorite movies is Commando or Starship Troopers, depending on when you ask. I have another friend who intentionally says the opposite of whatever you say about movies just to be on the other side. Two other friends (including the Commando one) said that Borat was lame and not funny, because "obviously it wasn't real." Whatever the hell that means. I feel ya buddy, but everyone I know loved the Departed. That girl is stupid and I don't like her.

Thank you! My least favorite movie, I haven't decided if all of my friends like that despite me, or they genuinely like it. I think it's a bit of both. I have two friends who also hate it with a passion and we can go on and on about how much we hate it. That movie rots the brain and every copy should be destroyed so future generations can live a Bad Boys 2-less existence.
calm down, everyone has there own tastes, even if they r rediculiously stupid, and u wanna stomp there stomach in tell theres blood in there stool

I am/was calm. I didn't react angrily when she said that, merely responded with a "Well, they may be big names, but they put on impressive performances for the most part."
i thought u slapped that bitch

my problem is kinda opposite. My friends think certain movies are outstanding when they obviously suck.

I study a double major of Film and Media at univeristy, so my course is pretty made up of three groups;
1: People who love film, in all of its broad forms
2: People who namedrop films that they themselves haven't seen in order to sound important, and who disregard anything that is remotely popular, dismissing it as "Commercial dogshit"
3: People who know absolutly nothing about films and chose to take the course because they thought it would be easy
Now, let me start off by saying, my university is in the top 5 places to study F&M in the entire country. To get onto the course, you need to have a higher set of grades than it takes to get onto a degree in forensic science. Yep.
There is a gay guy in my dorms called Stuart who studies film, but hates anything that has anything remotely original or complex in it.
For fucks sake, he hated "The Departed" because he said it was 'Too complex', he hated "Eternal Sunshine Of A Spotless Mind" because it was 'Too weird'. He cannot understand the most basic narrative structure (he got confused at the plot to 'Notting Hill').

One of my best friends favorite movies is Commando or Starship Troopers.
Oh come on! Commando is an action classic and Starship Troopers is a brilliant alagory for US foreign policy and the military dominance of politcaly motivated actions. Its alot smarter than it lets on.
For example, in Starship Troopers, the bugs are actually the good guys. Earth are the invading force on their home world

my friends roomate says Dumb and Dumber is a mediocre movie and that Tenacious D and the Pic of Destiny is better. His opinion is no longer valid in any situation

Oh, don't get me wrong - I love those movies too. I just find it hilarious, because you know, they're an Arnold movie and a kick ass, but extremely poorly adapted Heinlein story, and they are his favorite. I find it funny because good luck finding anyone else in the world who those movies are their 1a and 1b for favorite movies list.

I made my friend watch Clerks with me and she fell alseep half way through. I was mightilly offended, considering she was terrified of The Grudge (2) and made me watch that JLo/Jane Fonda movie with her the other day.
I'd kill to have friend who appreciate film. Y'know, people who'd rather watch A Clockwork Orange then The Covenant.

Most of my friends actually have good taste in movies. And then there are some who only pretend to like the movies just because everyone else does. I think that's more annoying then someone having bad taste in movies.

he thinks big momma's house is the funniest thing ever.
That is just a hilarious phrase.
Most of my friends have a horrible taste in movies...
Im talking like the Wayans brothers and I mean "White Chicks" and "Little Man" Wayans brothers. All those stupid parody movies too started by the Scary Movie series and "Beerfest" and "Employee of The Month" a lot of recent garbage like that. Also anything with Martin Lawrence and Rob Schnieder too. They criticize me too for not liking that garbage, saying that I dont know what comedy is, or anything about movies....hmmm....well I guess thats why Im minoring in film right now because Im still learning.
Now I like some dumb movies, like Napolean Dynamite, some frat pack movies, the Jackasses etc... and Im a huge fan of all the Rocky movies and arguably 5 out of the 6 sucked, so my taste isnt all Oscar and arthouse material and I enjoy "incidental comedies" like anything with Hulk Hogan for example...but bearing through a group of people that seriously think "White Chicks" is a good movie, makes me question why I even talk to them sometimes.
Then my gf who has practically the same taste in movies as me has to deal with her girlfriends wanting to see "John Tucker Must Die" and "Aqua Marine" so she goes through the same problems.

what annoys me is when you watch a movie with alot of dry or dark humor, and the dumbass you're watching the movie with gets pissed because your laughing and they don't get it.
