The key is to eat clean and do some cardio at least three times a week. There are little things you can do throughout your day that can help you burn calories with no effort.
1) Drink green tea. It's not going to do anything amazing, but it does have antioxidants which are good for you. It's good in the morning because it has caffeine, and it's good to have before cardio. I believe that a study proved that if you drink 3 cups a day, you'll burn an extra 60 calories doing nothing. Eating celery is great because your body burns more calories digesting it than you consume eating it. I have a hard time doing this because I find it to taste really gross.
2) Drink ice water. You should be drinking eight glasses of water a day, and even more if you're active (which you should be if you're doing cardio). If you drink ICE water, your body has to heat it up before it is able to be used. Doing this, of course, takes energy, so you burn a few calories in the process. Like green tea, it's nothing dramatic, but why not do it if you can burn calories doing nothing? Plus, ice water is refreshing.
3) Do some weight training. The more muscle you have, the more calories your body burns at rest. Weight training in itself doesn't have the calorie burning effect that cardio does, but putting on the muscle will increase your basal metobolic rate (the amount of energy your body expends at rest).
4) Eat small amounts every couple of hours. Choose foods that are healthy and full of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Never let yourself get hungry. It might seem weird, but the reasoning behind this lies in the history of human beings. Back when food wasn't always easy to come by, our bodies developed a mechanism that would cause us to go into "survival mode" whenever we got hungry. This means when your body feels hungry, it does not know that it will be getting food any time soon, so it actually burns everything BUT fat. You need to keep eating small portions often to keep your metabolism firing on all cylinders.
5) Try doing two INTENSE cardio workouts in the same day. Rather than running once a day for 30 minutes, try doing two more intense cardio workouts in the same day that last about 15-20 minutes. Warm up for about five minutes, then for fifteen minutes do the exercise intensely. This has been proven to burn more calories (I think twice as many) than doing just one 30 minute cardio session. Try this at least three times a week.
Do some sit ups too, even if you used to have abs under the flab. You can never have abs that are too defined, and if you don't rest much between sets, ab training can be decent cardio (nowhere near as great as running or anything, but it will still get your heart rate up).
Running is great for you. When you run, you give your metabolism a boost for about 24 hours, meaning at rest you're burning calories at a much faster rate than if you had not done any cardio.
I hope this helped you, good luck. :)
