if this isn't thread worthy, i'll delete it and keep it to the MLB Thread. anyway, if you were starting a franchise and had to pick one player around whom to base your team, who would you pick and why? you can pick anyone currently in MLB but i think it'd be better to stick to younger players.

Babe Ruth? or no past players?

i think people might be hesitant on Lirano now becaues of the injury issues.

probably a young dude like carl crawford or grady sizemore. young pitchers are a pretty big risk.

Ryan Howard good clean image and a monster when it comes to hitting

i change my vote to cabrera because i am an idiot and forgot his existence for 15 minutes. other than the fact that he may or may not give a shit, he is manny ramirez v. 2 and i would take that in a second.

Alex Gordon. The Royals will become a dominant force.
Well, in like 4 or so years. Their pitching staff/minor league pitching depth does not match some of the great mashers they've got (gordon, billy butler, ryan shealy). But Dayton Moore's got them on their way in the right direction. It just takes time. I'm stoked to see the young hitters for the Royals a bunch this year, though. David Dejesus, Mark Teahen, Gordon, Butler and Shealy is a very good start. If Jon Buck becomes the catcher they thought he'd be when they traded Beltran for him and Gathwright can get on with any sort of consistency, they'll be a dangerous lineup in 2-ish years.

while i certainly agree from a talent standpoint, if i'm starting a franchise, wright would be the face of it. he's like derek jeter jr.: talented, young, good looking, and most importantly, marketable. and i just don't see cabrera doing the same thing.

I can find veterans to lead. I can't find a 23 year old 3rd baseman who averages 160 games, .311 avg, 30 hr, 116 rbi, 42 doubles, .384 obp, .535 slg. Oh, and he plays 3rd, LF, and RF (though, I'd probably prefer him at DH). He's also led his offense to a World Series title with a 4 home run, 12 rbi postseason in 2003.

More talented, just as young, champion, major factor on the championship team. Sign me up.

And did I miss something where he's beating up women or running over 2nd basemen intentionally? I understand he had that incident with his teammate and joe girardi, but I'd hardly use that as justification to pick a worse player over him at 3rd base.

So because he got in a yelling match with a teammate(s) and his manager who the owner and GM didn't like anyways and were going to fire, he's going to become Albert Belle automatically? I'll have to disagree.

I'm not all up on Sizemore's nuts like everybody else is. I'd rather have Carl Crawford in terms of young guys with big upsides.

 i'd take both of them. i'd put Crawford in left and Sizemore in center and...i don't know who in right, maybe Francouer? Pujols would be at first, Hanley Ramirez would be second base, i guess, Reyes at shortstop, Cabrera at third and Mauer catching.

haha, they're actually pretty similar but Francouer has a much better glove. they both have good arms, though. both hit the ball a fuckin' ton, too.

I just wanna see what Wily can do in a full season for once.

i would, too, but i think that's for malicious reasons, haha. JD Drew is a much better fit in RF for Boston. sadly. :-/

Pujols. He has an MVP, a gold glove, a World Series ring, and he's 27.

Cabrera is close though.
