View Full Version : On a Lonely Summer's Day

The tires were warm. From friction and sun.
Moisture was trickling down tanned cheekbones.
Dashboard illusion complete with rising steam.
Spattered dragonflies on the glass, streaked and smeared.
Paper towel in hand, rub away the remnants of rain.
Water droplets from last night's torrent.

I'm going out. I don't know when I'll be back.
Tore down the drive, I get so lonely after dark.
Drilled a hole in my dash so I can toggle my songs on repeat.
The rubber is warm, my stomach is stuck.
Another car screams by, a vocal I tried to miss.
Inside, the music trembles.

Seems like just yesterday, a new tune to an old cliche.
The leaves were falling, was I the one to blame?
Stayed up late, and we sang.
Down the drive again, to the lake.
My headlights are dead, says the late night fisherman.
We bid him goodnight, sang harmony under the stars.

There is this girl. We've only just met.
So much grief, so much regret.
Gone away, far from home.
The weekend's just over.
I almost drove over the line.
I make a phone call, can we just laugh again?

I'm so alone. But we have each other.
Stain my seats with tears again.
Scream through the cycle, the same routine.
Into fifth gear, rage against the machine.
Steer the wheel, slide into the slippery shoulder.
Can I take the leap, will I lose control?

Familiar road, and the radio plays on.
Pass another car, I can break the distance.
Hate this station, the same echo, the same road noise.
One by one, and I'm forgetting every last smile.
Slept in my car last night.
I couldn't just go home.
