the term "alternative" is thrown around all over the place when it comes to describing music
and i can see why cuz it is such a broad term...
so tell me...does "alternative" have a definitive sound?
or is it just a term for bands that don't fit under anything else?

alternative is merely a term used by the record companies to make certain corporate bands seem somehow different than other corporate bands.

it kind of had meaning in the 80s and early 90s, but not really.

the term originated when Chris Farley's girdle snapped during the filming of "Tommy Boy." Ever since, "Alternative" has been used to describe bands that were inspired by that very moment (televised numerous times in a documentary about the film.) Since its creation, people have tried to claim that the term implies that the artists under that category serve as a sort of "alternative" to corporate pop music.
While it's easy to see why that mistake is made (they are the same word after all), anyone trying to make that claim is inevitably wrong, and should look up their film/music history.

NOTE: The term is now considered taboo due to Mr. Farley's tragic death a few years ago. If anyone uses the word "alternative," it is almost always considered to be in bad taste.

As worthless of a genre name as the e-word.

i heard that the term 'indie' means 'underground', and the term 'alternative' simply means 'mainstream'.

makes sense to me.

How does that make any sense whatsoever?

Indie means Independant. Alternative means different than the norm.

And stop posting in red. It's annoying.

I always related alternative to maintream...lol

Alternative is very broad, it seems almost any *rock* band can be labeled alternative.

Wikipedia it (alternative) if you really want to know what the "true" meaning is.

I agree w/A Fatal Goodbye though, i've always thought of alternative & mainstream as the same because now a days, just about every "rock" band is put into the alternative genre

Genre's in general just suck today, look at myspace and you will know what I mean. A genre for each and every specific sound and half the bands don't even apply to the true meaning of the genre. I just wish that one day we can drop all these "-core"s and "-o"s and just get back to the basics.
