View Full Version : Republicans bar Planned Parenthood funding / SIGN THE PETITION!

A statement by Planned Parenthood:
"The U.S. House of Representatives has just voted to bar Planned Parenthood health centers from all federal funding for birth control, cancer screenings, HIV testing, and other lifesaving care.
It is the most dangerous legislative assault in our history, and it cannot go unanswered. We — Planned Parenthood and the three million women, men, and teens who are at risk of losing access to basic care — need you to stand united with us now.
Sign our open letter to every single representative in the House who voted for this cruel, unconscionable, unthinkable law, and to every senator who still has a chance to stop it."

Here is another list of 10 crazy things that Republicans have proposed in recent weeks regarding women:
1) Republicans not only want to reduce women's access to abortion care, they're actually trying to redefine rape. After a major backlash, they promised to stop. But they haven't yet. Shocker.
2) A state legislator in Georgia wants to change the legal term for victims of rape, stalking, and domestic violence to "accuser." But victims of other less gendered crimes, like burglary, would remain "victims."
3) In South Dakota, Republicans proposed a bill that could make it legal to murder a doctor who provides abortion care. (Yep, for real.)
4) Republicans want to cut nearly a billion dollars of food and other aid to low-income pregnant women, mothers, babies, and kids.
5) In Congress, Republicans have a bill that would let hospitals allow a woman to die rather than perform an abortion necessary to save her life.
6) Maryland Republicans ended all county money for a low-income kids' preschool program. Why? No need, they said. Women should really be home with the kids, not out working.
7) And at the federal level, Republicans want to cut that same program, Head Start, by $1 billion. That means over 200,000 kids could lose their spots in preschool.
8) Two-thirds of the elderly poor are women, and Republicans are taking aim at them too. A spending bill would cut funding for employment services, meals, and housing for senior citizens.
9) Congress just voted for a Republican amendment to cut all federal funding from Planned Parenthood health centers, one of the most trusted providers of basic health care and family planning in our country.
10) And if that wasn't enough, Republicans are pushing to eliminate all funds for the only federal family planning program. (For humans. But Republican Dan Burton has a bill to provide contraception for wild horses. You can't make this stuff up).

The roll call vote hasn't been posted, but House staff provides the names of those Dems who voted with the Rs to defund: Dan Boren (OK), Jerry Costello (IL), Joe Donnelly (IN), Dan Lipinski (IL), Mike McIntyre (NC), Collin Peterson (MN), Nick Rahall (WV), Silvestre Reyes (TX), Mike Ross (AR), Heath Shuler (NC).
These Republicans voted no: Charlie Bass (NH), Judy Biggert (IL), Mary Bono Mack (CA), Charlie Dent (PA), Robert Dold (IL), Rodney Frelinghuysen (NJ), Richard Hanna (NY). Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) voted present.
All of the funding blocked, ironically, is Title X funding--contraceptive and family planning assistance to low and moderate income individuals. You know, the education and means by which to prevent unwanted pregnancies, and thus, reducing abortion. Apparently so as not to single out Planned Parenthood, to resolution actually eliminates the entire Title X program.
It will also eliminate the entire Title X program, which was founded in 1970 and is the only federal grant program dedicated solely to providing individuals with comprehensive family planning and preventive health services, particularly to low-income families, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ Office of Population Affairs. Preventative health services include breast and cervical cancer screenings, HIV prevention education, pregnancy diagnosis and counseling.
In fiscal year 2010, Congress appropriated approximately $317 million for family planning activities supported under Title X, 90 percent of which was used for clinical family planning services, according to the OPA. In 2008, 4,500 community-based clinics (including health departments, university health centers, faith-based organizations, public and private nonprofit agencies, and tribal organizations) received grants from Title X that went to approximately 5 million people, the OPA said. In roughly 75 percent of U.S. counties, at least one clinic receives Title X funds....
There are 85 local Planned Parenthood affiliates nationwide, which operate more than 820 health centers, according to its website, which also indicates that more than 1.2 million youths and adults participate in Planned Parenthood educational programs every year.

They might not hate women but they are seriously misogynistic. And maybe no malice is intended (although that sounds weird because malice is basically the be hurtful with intent) but it doesn't make it okay. When you strip away something that helps many low income women, children and families, it's really just irresponsible and almost discriminatory.

You claimed 100% of their money goes to abortion... and anyway, your tax dollars aren't paying for aboritons. Tax money isn't legally allowed to be used on abortions. Planned Parenthood doesn't personally provide any abortions that I know of; if one of their patients decides to have an abortion, they'll refer them to someone else who can do it. They don't do it themselves, and they don't use taxpayer money on it. But in any case, they have separate funds (private and public), and they won't do anything remotely abortion-related with the public funds.

"Georgia Representative Wants To Investigate All Miscarriages"
Franklin wants to create a Uterus Police to investigate miscarriages, and requires that any time a miscarriage occurs, whether in a hospital or without medical assistance, it must be reported and a fetal death certificate issued. If the cause of death is unknown, it must be investigated. If the woman can't tell how it happened, than those Uterus Police can ask family members and friends how it happened. Hospitals are required to keep records of anyone who has a spontaneous abortion and report it.

Actually white women get 60% of all abortions. A simple understanding of the country's overall population would help you understand how that's the case. Abortion's a socio-economic issue, not a racial one. It just seemed easy, since you were attempting to paint pro-choicers as being complicit in eugenics, to claim that conservatives hate women, minorities, and immigrants. I suspect that doesn't sit any more well with you than your argument does with the people it's aimed at.

yeah this makes sense. The overwhelming number of aborted babies are african american.
That has more to do with socioeconomic disparities than a secret plan to abort black children. One of the most important reasons that women obtain abortions is because they cannot afford to have a child. Going back farther, African-American women, and the community as a whole, disproportionately have less access to contraceptives and the appropriate health care facilities. But all of this is irrelevant, because the number of abortions a woman decides to get has nothing to do with her right to do so, just as those numbers have nothing to do with a particular organization's goals.

That's not walking through life eyes closed, I have researched the issue, and I believe that abortion is not right. There are many places people can get the same services. Countless women's clinics, hospitals, etc.
Why do you think it's so wrong?
I'm going to tell you a little story. My mom's friend/my former roommate was raped by the father of her child (that was actually how she conceived the baby), he sued her for custody and won it. If I was in that situation, I'd go into a rage if anyone ever told me that the decision to abort was a bad thing.

Those are the cases where everything becomes more murky. I'm still against it, but I'd understand in a case like that. In a "oh, we didn't use protection, so instead of having the kid and either keeping it or giving it up for adoption, I'm gonna get rid of it" case, it's just disgusting and selfish. As I said, I view abortion as murder. Just because the child is still in the womb doesn't mean it's not a child. It has a heart beat, which means it is alive to me.

Since when does being male or female determine how you view murder?
This is a joke, right?

insects and animals are alive too. I dont know what makes a fetus any different.

A fetus doesn't have a heartbeat for several weeks of development. Also, one third of all pregnancies are naturally aborted by the woman's body in the first few weeks. Guess that makes mother nature a mass murderer.

That's such a flawed definition of murder.
and the winner for weakest argument ever
The stfu was harsh, but I really find the concept of a man, someone who will never go through the pregnancy itself, trying to place boundaries on how a woman should handle it is just ridiculously sexist and obnoxious.
And I think the murder argument is even more extreme and weak. I mean, I can understand the scientific grey area of those weeks closer to term, but I mean maybe if we loosened up the adoption process, there wouldn't be so many considering abortion (even those late-term abortions make up the smallest percentage of abortion).

Sums up my feelings exactly.

I'm glad we've never funded any wars that a liberal might find morally reprehensible.

It doesn't matter if you are pro or against abortion because your tax dollars are not legally allowed to be used for abortion services. end of discussion. Your stance against this bill will not prevent abortions and will only result in more STIs and perhaps even more abortions, because there are many, many people who depend on PP for pro rata birth control, free condoms and STI tests. PP also provides sexual health education to thousands, perhaps more but I don't feel like looking up figures because if it helps even ten people not get an STI or an unwanted kid it's worth it.

NO, IT'S MURDER, DON'T YOU SEE? STIs = murder because Planned Parenthood = abortion. This is how the transitive property works.

We established that human life is no different than that of an animal or insect, so unless you have an aversion to killing insects, I don't see how war can be morally reprehensible. Also, I think saysmydoctor would say, unless you're a soldier, you have no business commenting on war.

Actually, I think a more appropriate analogy would be letting the people in the country we're targeting decide whether or not we go to war against them.

This shit is ridiculous, but if the law is that money is not to go towards abortions then it is so. I believe both Liberals and Conservatives can agree on funding victims of rape abortions.
As for careless women, they should provide procedure money.
