Surprised that I did not see a thread.

An independence vote was held in January. 99% voted for an independent nation. Salva Kiir Mayardit was elected President, and the Republic of South Sudan will become independent sovereign state on July 9.

i knew this was going on, apparently like 85% of the country is illiterate so their ballots consisted of 2 hands apart to become independent and 2 hands shaking to stay together. crazy isnt it.

its not like sudan is some no-name small island country...or a new african country or eastern european, or one the "stans" of the world. thats why your statement seems ignorant, sudan's a well known country.

Can't see the N. Sudanese being upset by it since 99% of people voted for it to become a separate state. I'm also assuming that 99% of the Sudanese don't live in the south.

I could be wrong, but wasn't the vote just in the South deciding whether or not they wanted to secede? That could explain why 99% voted to split up...

I thought it was just the southern sudanese voting.

I'm surprised there isn't already a thread on this as well. Thanks for creating!

A large part of Northern Sudan was backing the government as it sent Arab militias into the south to decimate the area. I couldn't give a crap if the Northern Sudan's economy faulters a bit because they have less access to oil.

The referendum took place in Southern Sudan so it was in all likelihood a vote dominated by the Southern Sudanese. Additionally, the results actually came out to be greater than the population of several Southern countries, so several southern countries' results are not being included. Even with that, results are still overwhelmingly for independence.
