finish high school first, unless you want a job that is more than boring later. For the most part early on, being in a band won't meet your basic subsistance needs.

can't you take a break from school...i'm assuming you're in college...and i'd suggest touring during the summer as well

do not drop out of high school for a band.
it is not worth it.
look at drop dead, gorgeous and the devil wears prada; they finished high school and are doing fine now.
if you dont get your diploma and your band breaks up/ doesnt do well, you will regret it forever

If you are out of high school then go for it. I'm listening to your band right now.

Have you guys actually sat down and planned out a tour?
If not, do that first. Don't drop out so you can start planning - Don't make school a reason why you CAN'T do something. Plenty of forward progress can be made while you're still in school.

My friend dropped out of college one semester short of graduating to join a decently well known band. He seems very happy with the decision.

I would too - You can always go back and finish a semester.

i probably wouldnt drop out of highschool to be in a full time band. if the situation was right, i would possibly drop of of college for that, but only if i know its right.

That was mean.. :-|
I know a lot of guys in touring bands who go to college. You should only make the decision to drop out after you've toured at least once. Touring is something that a lot of bands can't deal with, but if your band can that's good. Keep touring, but don't make touring the reason you drop out of school. I wouldn't quit school to go on a tour with my band unless I had some other reason to drop out. I'm planning out a tour for my band right now. We're working it into the part of the summer when all of us will be free (the ones of us in college are taking summer courses) for a two or three week period. The band is still a high priority for us. We'll miss a few days of school for a few shows, but not a lengthy tour.

You can always go back to school later, but you wont always have the chance of being in a well functioning band.

what level of education are you currently in? I would say keep playing, play night shows, local shows, and tour your ass off during the summer and on breaks. Stay in school though man, education is massively important and will probably influence your playing and songwriting more than you can imagine

well theoretically i'd enjoy being in a band...even though its hard work and i'd be dirt poor. but i'm in my second year of college and its going nowhere...career wise anyway. i just dont want to get a history degree and be a teacher someday.
but thanks everyone for the advice, i actually did get something out of this.

Yeah, absolutely. I was close to not going to school this Spring semester and doing some small touring with my band, but I decided against it. I have to have some stability...you know?

I recently had the offer to tour full time (year round) with an established signed band. (I'm leaving the name out, don't ask. That isn't the point of the post.) I declined. I would just be doing the tour as a merch guy. But I chose to just tour this summer. I can't make a living doing merch. I am going to do it this summer, have a blast, and then go back to school in the fall. I have about 2 years left and then I'll have my degree. I still plan to tour summers though for the next couple years until I am at a job that won't allow me to take a summer off.
I guess the moral of the story is, do the band only if you think the band is going to be able to satisfy your needs. Everybody has their own needs (happiness, financial, insurance, etc.) So decide what you want and figure out if you will get that with the band or school.

A lot of people are saying to stay in School and get a good job afterwards, but what's to stop you from staying and studying, etc. during term time, touring throughout the Summer and doing local gigs whilst at School, and then once you graduate, take it more seriously...? Staying in School and graduating doesn't mean you're going to be stuck in some dead end job.
