Is not nearly as bad as it's made out to be, it doesn't have a great start, but really warms up about half way through.

the title track is one of my favorite AM! songs.
He sounds a little like John Darnielle from The Mountain Goats on that track. I like it.

i agree that the title track is pretty good...i think i'd like am! a lot more if they went more in that direction with their new album, but judging by the new songs they played at warped, it doesn't seem like that's the case.
i also like "how low", but that's about it as far as sfafc goes.
when i saw them with trio last april, tom was really cool, but i talked to him again at warped this summer and he was a complete asshole.
idk what to say about this band anymore.

If they ever write another album that sounds like Axl Rose I will be fucking pissed. That would be boring, I'm glad they're progressing.

i never said write one that sounds like it. i said write one "as good as". they wont do it. theyre too busy being assholes and opening for green day to honestly care about writing a down to earth album anymore.

.....so, are you saying that am!'s albums before sfafc were quote "TERRIBADAWFUL MUSIC?"
Time seven is this Saturday for me. Unless the free show turns out to be a 21+ show (I've heard rumors about that). They're playing with Mastadon, so I'm going to have to stomached a bunch of annoying fucks.
Anywas, SFAFC is not a good album. It's boring. Every song sounds forced, and they seem to mock the system they support (albeit indirectly). I remember being so psyched about it at first, and then they released the video for Don't Lose Touch and I cried a little on the inside. It was so horrible. Joy was the only song on that album I listen to, and I never even listen to that. Then again, I've been turned off Against Me! lately. It's probably related to how much of a douchebag Tom has become. I mean...signing to a major label is antithetical to 90% of the things that he writes about (Sire's parent company is headed by a guy that sits on the board of one of the richest corporations in the world). I remember listening to SFAFC the day it came out and laughing at the lyrics. Then a month or two later when they signed to Sire I sent them an e-mail asking why they would sign to a company that contributes to the problems they sing about. I never got an answer. They never answered in person either. I hope I can talk to him Saturday. Talking with him is always such a blast.
Vivida Vis is my favorite album though.

No, I meant overall improvement of their songwriting skills.

You do realize that compared to alot of music videos out there, Don't Lose Touch really isn't that shitty? Its not like they hired the guy who directed Missy Elliot's videos and had a bunch of teenage girls come in and shake their asses. Its just them performing, and there's a dog or something. If you're gonna be pissed at AM! for putting out a shitty video, take aim at the From Her Lips To God's Ears video. THAT was fucking stupid.

this is more or less what i was getting at when i made that opening remark. tom used to be so anti-clear channel and they always took a stance to oppose mass marketization of music, such as how it is in the "industry" today. i remember reading tom saying that he hated most of their music before former clarity as well.

I wasn't talking about the video. I don't watch any music videos at all. I hated the song. The only reason I watched that video was because I wanted hear the new song. It sucked so hard.

I'd say Eternal Cowboy is pretty close to on par with Axl Rose. That album is always neglected.

First of all, are you referring just to Tom or to the whole band? Also, is this just from what you've read in online interviews, or from actual interaction with the band? Because I must admit, sometimes Tom does come off as arrogant in his online interviews, but in my interview with them this summer at warped, the only time he came off as anything other than a nice guy was when the topics of the major label or past albums was brought up. I think it's safe to say that after being questioned and criticized as much on things like this, it's going to get to you. And Warren and Andrew were fantastic people to meet. Especially Warren.
Then a month or two later when they signed to Sire I sent them an e-mail asking why they would sign to a company that contributes to the problems they sing about. I never got an answer. They never answered in person either. I hope I can talk to him Saturday. Talking with him is always such a blast.

Vivida Vis' production is brutal.. i started with axl rose so i have a hard time getting into that one. I need to give it more chances though. Also, I wish I would've gotten that question from you back when I asked for questions so I could've asked them in person... it would've been a good time.

Are you sure it's before Former Clarity, or before Axl Rose? He saidin my interview "for me personally, I think that Reinventing Axl Rose… I’m very proud of that record. I think we did a very good job"
I'd agree with this statement.

I love ATEC. I mean...it's a great album. So fucking fun to just blast and sing along with.
Warren is so fucking nice. The guitarist in my band pissed him off once, but he's always been nice when I've talked with him. Plus, his hugs are awesome. I want to cuddle with him one day. Tom is nice too, most of the time. But he can be a douche at times.
And yes, Vivida Vis has horrible production, but it is a great album.
When i met them in Feb last year, i talked to all of them. Andrew and James were the most talkative and sociable, especially Andrew. He was great! Warren was kinda quiet, but the nicest guy you'll ever meet, but Tom, while nice, kinda had a "blah" attitude to meeting people after the show. The others talked to us like we were friends. Tom talked to us like we were fans. You know?

I actually love this album. I'd say my favorite songs are "How Low", "Even At Our Worst, We're Still Better Than Most", "Problems" and "Joy" (although it's really short).
I've been thinking about getting another AM! album, as this is the only one I have. Which is better, Reinventing Axl Rose, or As the Eternal Cowboy?
You'd prolly like ATEC more. RAR is my choice though.
Anyways, at SXSW 04, when they did the Take Action Party free show, Warren told the funniest fucking joke about blind mice. It was great. I don't remember it anymore, but it was great. Tom came up to my friend who was wearing an A//Political shirt and took his picture with him on his own phone. It was pretty funny.... Next time I get to talk to Tom I want to ask him if he still has it. I'd be funny if he did. That was on the A3 Occult Roots tour last year. We forgot to ask him at Warped.

I'm talking about Tom because he says things like punk is a limiting genre and every other thing he says in interviews is a stereotype. I feel like he just used punk to get popular and how he's done with that, so he can abandon his "beliefs" for a bigger audience. I'm sure the rest of the band is quite nice.

I know. I write love songs and I play punk music. I don't know where he got the idea punk bands can't write love songs. Punk, as a philosophy, is built around the idea of love (in my opinion).

well even punk as a form of music isn't all that limiting these days when you consider things bands like Gogol Bordello, or World Inferno Friendship society are doing.

i found Reinventing Axl Rose to be the most accessible, probably because it opens with Pints of Guiness Make You Strong which is one of their catchiest songs. You really can't go wrong with either one... RAR is a bit more raw, less polished, but is typically seen as the fan favourite. both are great.
i really wish vivida vis had decent production.
