Brand New (http://www.absolutepunk.net/brandnew)'s single "Jesus (http://rope.zfmq.fimc.net/afamusic/brandnew_jesuschrist56.ram)" will finally head to radio on 3/26. What do you think this will do for the band?

I hope nothing. For the good of the band.

I've been hearing this on the radio already, and while I doubt it'd do much for them, "Jesus" seems to make the most sense as a single.

The radio edit showed up here a couple weeks ago.
The PD for the radio station i work for honest to god thought this was a Stone Sour song when he first heard it. Harsh
the couple times we have played it, there has been a super positive reaction though.
I'm guessing this will do decent at radio but not great. Everyone who doesnt want this band on the radio shouldn't have anything to worry about.

i dont see brand new ever completely blowing up, but i could see them having success in the vein of other huge small bands...if that makes sense.

Not to pigeon-hold them or anything, but the style of God and the Devil, and a good amount of Deja have proved to be too uncomfortably depressing to cross over into the mainstream, atleast not in a way like My Chemical Romance or Dashboard have. I have no complaints, dont get me wrong, Brand New has been "the next band that will change my life" for the past 5 years. I basically think that if someone hasnt sunk their teeth into what Brand New is by now, further listening after maybe being inclined to by this single, will just send them back to whatever they were listening to before...or not, whatevers fine

All I know is that it won't get any radio play where I live.

03/12/07, 01:09 PM
i hope it helps them out as much as possible, but i honestly don't find many of the songs on the album that would appeal to mainstream radio or tv. but i'd like to see them get more exposure than they have right now, they deserve it.

03/12/07, 01:20 PM
i think brand new will always stay the same level. not in a bad way, but they won't be blowing up with 'jesus'. brand new are always going to have their fans with them regardless if its on the radio.
it would definitely be cool to hear jesus on the radio though, im not gonna lie.

03/12/07, 01:29 PM
It will probably give the mainstream public the misconception that Brand New is a much more mellow band than they really are, gropuing them with the likes of Snow Patrol or Keane or something ridiculous at first...
ARCHERS!!!!
TMartin442
03/12/07, 01:33 PM
in my mind, archers or not the sun would have been the best singles. jesus might land them more respect with a more mature crowd, but overall i dont think it will blow up at the mainstream level.

I think it'll do as much for them as "Different" did for Acceptance. I don't think they'll break up, but I don't see it pushing their career anywhere. I agree with everyone that said Archers or Degausser, they're definitely the two strongest tracks.
SeanEBoy2686
03/12/07, 01:44 PM
"Jesus" isn't really single material... and i dont think it will lead to them blowing up.
theyll drop archers next
this is the catchiest song, and the one that i think could help them get noticed more... even though Sic Transit Gloria was catchy and didnt really do muchfor them.

Archers has been playing on some radio around here, I heard it yesterday. That would definitely be a better-received song. Which is probably why it's not a single and I doubt it will be. But, it'd be cool to see what that song could do.

03/12/07, 01:53 PM
Does the radio edit cut out the intro like they have been playing on t.v.?
I'm a little confused-is this supposed to be the first time Brand New has released a track to the radio? I've heard them on the radio for quite awhile. Off of this album I've heard Sowing Season for a couple of months with Jesus and Millstone randomly played.

It won't do anything for them in Florida. not unless you're a shitty band like hinder, sevendust and all of those other bands that sound alike. It'll get played in South Jersey, for sure.

im guessing the reason this song is the single is because the first time people heard it it blew them away, i.e. jeoff from thursday and ive read reviews that commend it as well, it was also the most downloaded song from devil and god. It's simple marketing. Jesus is the catchiest song.

i think they might get some complaints from christian groups...my mom is protestant, and heard me playing it one day...she happened to hear the "i'm scared i'll get scared and i swear i'll try to nail you back up" part...and was like "i don't want you listening to this filth!"

haha I actually thought this was a very mature way to incorporate religion into a song without offending anybody. it's obviously pro-christian but still has the disillusion factor to it that appeals to the people that have no religion or are agnostic or whatever. its definitely a beautiful song

I kinda dont want them to get big, I want them to keep with TRUE fans. I just dont want every single little teenie who is also super obsesed with MCR, Panic And FOB adding Brand New to their mono-sighted musical 'appreciation' (if you can call that appreciation). In saying that, I dont want them to crash and burn I want them to keep on doing what they're doing not becuase they are rich and fammous but because they have dedicated fans who appreciate their music and like them for what they do.

I know what your saying with this and pretty much agree. Devil and God is one of the most brilliant albums ive heard and it too will probably "change my life" like you say. However, this album is brilliant to the people that can understand it and actually hear it. its far to deep and sad for "backround music" that radio is. Also as you mentioned, the people that know who Brand New are and respect them for everything they do already love this album, some people still have yet to actually understand the depth of this album, but for the most part, they already have the fans that they are going to have, or even need for that matter.
I think it could be huge due to its subject matter. It may end up being the "What if God Was One Of Us" -like hit for them.
You Won't Know

While I totally agree with your point - many people won't understand the album. But they will buy it.
I don't think Archers would be a better single. Consider this: the best way to get played on the radio (besides a ridiculously poppy, hooky song that Brand New does not have on this album) is a ballad. And Jesus has has a religious edge that will attract many different people. As someone already said, religion sells.
This song could be played on Alternative/Modern Rock, Adult Contemporary, and even some open-minded Top 40 stations.
But the real money will be made in the video. If Brand New makes something that is both artistic and edgy but still somewhat accessible - which I expect them to do - they will get huge video airplay on Fuse, MTV and MTV2. They have a great chance to make something (potentially religious) with strong, affecting, powerful images.
Worst Case: The song gets more video play than "The Quiet Things..." or "Sic Transit" and the band's popularity grows.
Best Case (or is it worst case after all?): The song hits on a few formats and gains some popularity similar to Coldplay, except they have the talent and songwriting ability to back up the popularity.
As much as I just want them to be accessible to me, this band deserves to be heard by as many people that it possibly could.

i dont think anything because that song is boring as fuck
This is exactly why it wont do well on the radio, because people that listen to the radio dont actually LISTEN to the music, its just backround music. In order to understand and appreciate a song like Jesus (or any song off The Devil and God for that matter) it requires what is known as analytical listening.

This song has the best chance of any to gain wider success for Brand New. The immediate accessibility of the repeated "Jesus Christ" lines will catch people's attention and draw them in. Even though it does get slow in the middle, radio listeners can handle slowness for the sake of a few undeniably great moments. If this song gets played on the mainstream radio stations, Brand New will get big, and hopefully with a more intelligent and mature audience than FOB fans. Jesse deserves to make money.

what people seem to forget is that we are already fans.
we have a supreme respect for the song already because we know brand new.
we know what they're capable of and we understand more about them than the average radio listener.
therefore, we look into their material and try to understand it, rather than just saying "oh that's nice."
the song will not propel them to hollywood fame. my reasoning:
-the song is not mainstream-radio-catchy.
-brand new is not a band most people have already heard of.
-jesse lacey wasn't on american idol.
-the song is deep. like, pretty deep. it's intriguing and intense, and it has too much to do with jesse's introspection for it to be truly embraced by radio listeners after only hearing the song once.
bottom line: IMO, it'll hit some people hard, but a majority will brush it off.

i don't think taking "christ" out of the name will add to it not offending the christian community... i have a feeling it's more to not offend secular community, also one word is easier to say than two...it seems the song is "talking to jesus" than cursing judging by a few of the things he says
