View Full Version : What is your view on Selling out??

We've all heard of those gay bands like Mest, Good Charlotte, and NFG... but how many people actually think that its a good thing that those shitty bands exist? Bands that sell out to make money only make things so much worse for the people that actually enjoy this genre of music. Whenever a cd comes out now, it's a lot more expensive because record stores believe that it will sell as much as one of those insipid bands and they are looking to make money. Another crappy reason that those bands are extant is that they attract all of the little teeny-bopper kids to shows where they shouldn't be.

Everyone knows how hot pits get at shows. Most of the time, bands will throw water out into the crowd so that people don't pass out... but when these little 12 year old girls are there, they don't seem to remember the manners they were once taught. They don't share. The bottle of water wasn't thrown to them because someone in the band likes them, rather to keep people from dehydrating.

These same people are the people that fucking cry about getting shoved, or even politely ask, "can you please stop touching me?" while a band is on stage. I tend to reply with an "Ok, let me tell all of these people to back up a few inches so that YOU can have some space. :)"

Selling out is something that has turned this genre of music from something that was once original, into something that is trendy. Go make your money, but make sure that you earn it.
Does anybody ever feel the same way?

i hate all the whiny people in pits. they need to go home. selling out is lame. some bands buy in though not sell out. they now exactly what they are doing. other bands just get all greedy when the money starts to come in.

and i know im gunna get yelled at or something for this but it made me mad. ya know how new found glory started their own fan club? you paid like 30 something dollars and you got a signed poster or something? i think that is totally selling out. not cuz the idea of a fan club but... i remember like 2 yrs ago on the nfg website they said "dont buy our autographs off of ebay or dont pay anyone for them cuz you can just come up to us after a show and we will sign it for free" and i just think its hypocritical that they would have that. thats all. thanks. lol.

the term "selling out" is over used and its just some petty insult to a band. GC never sold out..they were crap to begin with and some how got on tv. stop bitching.

something even worse than whining 12 year old girls in pits: pits started at pop shows for no other reason than to 'look hardcore'.

i've had many personal experiences. and many children now have their front teeth knocked out thanks to their mindlessness and my elbow.

Exactly..I cant really think of too many bands that sold out...maybe The Offspring. How do you go from the CD "Smash" to songs like "Pretty Fly" and "Original Prankster"?

the cd was americana. and it was a good cd. smash was good too but there was a huge time difference between the 2 cds. which is why its different

Original Prankster wasnt on Americana. It was on Conspiracy of One I think. Americana wasnt that bad, but could that really be a coincidence? Signing to a major label and then releasing a bunch of pop-rock...

no i just think they had to meet the standards that they had to do or would be dropped from the label. smash was good and so was americana but the new one wasnt. but maybe they became rappers. i dont know ask them.

Exactly...they had to meet the labels standards. They changed their music style for money. That pretty much defines selling out. If a band wants to go on MTV, who cares...thats not selling out. I hate when people call bands sellouts for doing a video. As long as they stay true to their music and fans, who gives a shit?

most bands have limited time to make a new album which is set by their record label. so is that also considered selling out?

I would say no. As much as most of us hate it, record companies always have a presence. As long as the band isnt rushed into releasing crap...

BuriedAlive

the offspring wasnt rushed. they just a limitation to how long they could work on an album. and all bands are normally rushed to finish an album. just depends on how well they can work under pressure.

hold on i change that not all but most bands are rushed to finish an album becuz of the time span they have.

From what I see, the Offspring just appear as sellouts in my mind. I dont really know jackshit though. Alot of bands change their music style, for the better or worse. Change is a good thing, but I often get the impression that their label had alot to do with their sound being so different.

i dont like the new offspring but truly the only band i think that are sellouts are linkin park i mean come on look how many videos they have.

True, but they really havent changed their style. They have stuck to their whole rap-rock, nu-metal crap.

BuriedAlive

that doesnt mean they didnt sell out. i liked linkin park when they first hit the seen. one step closer was a good song. then they had to ruin a good album with all those videos. plus they are always on mtv doing all these shows and stuff.

open mind

the offspring haven't really changed their musical style since smash. on smash they had come out and play on americana they had pretty fly and on conspiracy of one they had original prankster all of these songs are not like the rest of their respective albums so i don't think they sold out.
the biggest sellout i can think of is courtney love.
